Now, I'm a bit of a late adopter (still have iTunes 9, I know).... but what exactly is the point of Ping? I'm stuggling to see any use besides being me-too social networking bloatware.

The goal is to create a shared, social experience that will be shaped by the collective imagination of consumers and will inspire discovery of new music and artists...
Or something like that.

You don't like it? There's no options to remove it? So what? It's not hurting you or costing you any money. And for anyone who cares, I signed up for Ping, didn't care for it, but I'm not trippin' that I can't remove it from the sidebar or Apple doesn't give me enough options, I just ignore it. You want better? Build your own company like Steve Jobs has done and make something for the public that you think we care to ingest. :p

These 'features' do 'hurt - they add to the already incredible bloat of iTunes and every time that happens, iTunes gets slower..and slower..and slower. And now, even worse, they've REMOVED a two very useful features. Genius Sidebar has been axed in favor of Ping, which doesn't do the same thing. They also got rid of the links next to the song/artist/album (in favor of the Ping menu) which were very useful because if you clicked them in, say a playlist, it would take you to the rest of the songs in the album, or all the songs by the artist in your library.

I see it as nothing more then a possible revenue generator for Apple if it ever takes off.

I like the Genius Sidebar and use it often. Guess I will just have to stick with iTunes 10.0 until somehow I am forced to upgrade.

Please tell me I am going insane and just missing this...

Did this update take away the arrows next to a selected song in the Library? The ones where you could option-click to jump to that person/album in your library?

I will be SO FRIGGING LIVID if they are gone and I can't get them back. I use them ALL THE TIME, every single time I am in iTunes!!! If they are gone because of STUPID PING DROP DOWN MENUS, I will flip.

***OK someone below says you can alt click the Ping drop down for this functionality. I just hope Doug's merry band of AppleScripters can come up with a way to reverse this so that normal click is for library, and alt click is to search the store.***

I hope the reason ping has become such a bloody mess (error messages galore!!!) is because it's an instant hit. I'm sure I'll like it if it ever works.

That actually still works if you option-click on the Ping-button and then, in the popup window select the album or artist name. It's just a more complex and distracting process now. :p

Type this into Terminal and restart iTunes: defaults write com.apple.iTunes show-store-link-arrows -bool TRUE :)

So glad these hidden preferences exist.

Disable the iTunes 10.0.1 Ping sidebar and buttons

I don't use Ping and I don't want the sidebar or the song buttons, surely I can't be the only person who hates this stuff.

Disable the Ping sidebar:

defaults write com.apple.iTunes disablePingSidebar 1

Disable the Ping song menus:

defaults write com.apple.iTunes hide-ping-dropdown -bool TRUE

It sounds like Apple is willing to do anything to try and make Ping successful even if they destroy iTunes in the process.

Thanks! It appears the cloud has a very slightly off black lining after all...

Also, thanks to Macopotamus for the command to disable the ping sidebar - although is there any way to get the genius sidebar back again?

Awesome - thanks! I was aware that the Ping button could be hid, but not that we could also get the arrows back. The "hack" to modify their behavior so that they link to items in your own library by default also still works. :) :)

I've disabled these buttons & ping sidebar through using this:

Quit iTunes and open Terminal. Paste the following line and hit Enter:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes hide-ping-dropdown 1

Success! The Ping dropdown menu is gone!!!

If you want it back, open Terminal again, paste the following line and hit Enter:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes hide-ping-dropdown 0

Simple :)

Okay, that works... but, how do we get back the old link arrows then? You know, the ones that normally took us to the iTunes store, but which we could redirect to our own library via:

defaults write com.apple.iTunes invertStoreLinks -bool YES

Those worked fine in iTunes 10.0.0, but not in 10.0.1 anymore.

This is a significant change, and i think the tiny x.x.1 version number bump is deceptive. There's much more than basic bug-fixes in this upgrade.

<EDIT>

Ah-ha. Bless you.

For some reason i was using show-store-arrow-links (which was once a valid key), instead of show-store-link-arrows.

All is well now, thanks.

Agreed. I'm very surprised they didn't consider this 10.1.

I think this is hilarious that not one person in this thread seems happy about this update. Lol.

All Apple needs to do is if you disable or never activate Ping - no mention of it shows up in your iTunes at all. Also giving us the option to use Genius Sidebar again.

they did not fix a glaring bug - iTunes 10 shows incorrect free space on the iPhone after you move an app to another screen or folder. Disappointed.

I'm guessing they are plastering it all over the place to advertise it. They figure if we see it enough we will finally give in and activate it.

Okay, I'll give you that, especially about the bloat which is my suspicion for why Apple axed the colors, to prevent any slowing down of iTunes. But also, look at it this way, now this is just ME, but I felt the Genius sidebar was useless, the main point of it was to get you to spend more money on the iTunes store, not just to merge all your favorite types of music together. Just know, anything Apple is doing, they are doing it for money as any company would. I'm sure Apple knew exactly how many people were using the Genius Sidebar and how much revenue came out of it. It may have not been a cash cow for them which may be the reason they got rid of it.

As far as Ping, nothing wrong with trying something new, but this forum doesn't give Apple a chance to try anything new. My problem is this is something free that was added and some people here have way too much nerve to complain about something free. Lucky for Apple MR isn't the main source of their customers.

I think so too, but overdoing it like this makes me not want to activate it that much more. I'm sure this will backfire on Apple.

Thank you, sir or maam :)

I disabled the Ping dropdown and got my arrows back -- all is well in the world.

For the record, I don't have anything against Ping necessarily. If it ever connects to Facebook, it might end up being really cool. Maybe. Someday. I just don't need it thrown in my face every time I play a song! Now I can right click and get the Ping options for any song I want -- tucked away in the contextual menu where it belongs.
