For anyone who wants to downgrade to 10.0, here's the download link: http://appldnld.apple.com/iTunes10/061-9183.20100902.X2ndX/iTunes10.dmg

There is still a Genius icon in the lower right status bar but it is greyed out.

That makes a Genius Playlist. The Genius Sidebar was great because if you only had a few songs from an album it would have a "Songs You're Missing" section and let you buy the rest of the album right there...plus give you tons of other suggestions.

(For some reason Ping couldn't find any matches for American Idiot...an album I bought from iTunes... )

Are you sure about that? I updated my iTunes to 10.0.1, and quicktime controls over album artwork still work for me... If you aren't playing a song currently, it won't show up, but while playing a song, clicking the album art will allow you to control the music via quicktime controls over the album artwork

Yeah, same here, still works for me.

I heard a lot of people wanting something like ping over the years. Now that you have it you don't want it? Also no one is forcing you to use it.
Adding Ping could naturally be considered at worst something akin to bad taste (since another icon in the sidebar is not the end of the world) but taking away the Genius sidebar. is removing one of the best recommendation systems that exist(ed) for music (simply because it was based on such a huge database, every song played in iTunes or on iPhones or iPods).

Any way to get rid of the ping icon on the tracks? So lame.

I know, they're lame!
So annoying, why do we have to do they're advertising...

I've disabled these buttons & ping sidebar through using this:

Quit iTunes and open Terminal. Paste the following line and hit Enter:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes hide-ping-dropdown 1

Success! The Ping dropdown menu is gone!!!

If you want it back, open Terminal again, paste the following line and hit Enter:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes hide-ping-dropdown 0

Simple :)
Hope this helps anyone who has also found this a pain in the £@%!

Keeping Young Fans Happy?

PING!!!! (didn't MS already do something like this? ;))

I guess Apple has to keep the teen and tween crowd happy with a new toy....

I can't wait till 5 years from now when iTunes Ping will be the most used social networking, especially for music. These same rants came before the iTunes Store got off the ground, these same rants were spewed when the iPad came out, these same rants were thrown at the iPod, these same rants were thrown at the App Store. All of the above have been extremely successful, especially against the competition with existing products of the like.

Sick of these self-rightous complainers on MR that act like they do everything right and perfect the first time, or at all. Ping is not allowed to have growing pains with this forum. The same forum that's not paying a dime for any of these extras that Apple throws on iTunes. You don't like it? There's no options to remove it? So what? It's not hurting you or costing you any money. And for anyone who cares, I signed up for Ping, didn't care for it, but I'm not trippin' that I can't remove it from the sidebar or Apple doesn't give me enough options, I just ignore it. You want better? Build your own company like Steve Jobs has done and make something for the public that you think we care to ingest. :p

Is it too early to consider PING a failure and just move on, pretending it never existed? Can we add it to the list with "G4 Cube", "Flower Power iMac", "iPod Mini", and "Shuffle without buttons"?

iPod mini? You're kidding, right? It was Apple's best-selling iPod before iPod nano was introduced--it was actually widely considered a risky move to discontinue it.

Stop being reasonable, this is the internet.

I don't think the iPod Mini was a failure... but the rest... yes.

With that said I think the plan is to force Ping down our throats until we just give in and start using it.

I have not activated it. Anyone else not using it at all?

Maybe, but maybe it is just that social networking using real names is something a lot of people have a deep aversion to.

Not from me, not on any of above, you can go through my posting history here. In fact, Ping is the first thing in a lot of years that I really felt uncomfortable with one of Apple's moves. I just don't have any confidence in that Apple really understands social networking.
In general, I just voiced my unease with Ping and moved on. But canning the Genius Sidebar for Ping just brought things back to the surface.

You want better? Build your own company like Steve Jobs has done and make something for the public that you think we care to ingest.
Nah, I just stick to last.fm instead of the Genius Sidebar.

I can't wait till 5 years from now when iTunes Ping will be forgotten and removed from iTunes. These same rants came before Apple TV launched, these same rants were spewed when the iPod Hi-Fi was introduced, these same rants were thrown at the Puck Mouse. All of the above have been lacklaster, especially against the competition with existing products of the like.

"Apple made a good product" does not mean every product Apple makes will be good and successful. That argument is asinine.

Perhaps a silly question, but can we drag the iTunes 10.0.1 to the trash and then install iTunes 10 from the above link? I've never removed iTunes before thinking it might mess something up.
Yes, we can with iTunes 10.0.1. Just add iTunes 10.0 back to your applications folder, rename either 10.0 or 10.0.1 (as both cannot be named the same obviously) and just add 10.0 to your Dock.
(I'd prefer this to deleting things, let's you go easily back if you want to.)

Disable iTunes store lol.

Yep. Every other icon can be added or removed individually one way or another, but not Ping (at least on 10.0), I am guessing you still must disable iTunes store in Parental controls.

Combined with the Gloom Gray left side bar color theme, I just couldn't continue using 10 so I pulled 9.x out of a backup drive

I'd say it's way too soon. Because I don't like or use Ping doesn't mean I will call it a failure. If you feel you must, that's your prerogative. Every Apple product has a ton of early detractors, yet most Apple initiatives seem to succeed, so that's not enough to call it a failure.

And we STILL can't go full screen on videos without blacking BOTH screens....

Apple, why are you so suck on some of the important details?

In all fairness, most programs seem to blackout the other screen in fullscreen mode, or if they don't, if I do anything on the other screen, it kills full screen.

I agree. Apple has introduced brilliant products like the iMac, iPod and iPhone. They have also introduced duds some of which you have already pointed out above. Ping sounds like it is more likely to end up on the dud list then on the successful one.

Thank god for terminal!

That ping icon on every selected track was killing my brain...

This definitely works...do it if it bothers you as much as it did me.

I have not activated it, too. I just don't see the point in sharing what music i like. and if I want to do sometime, I will just post a link on facebook, to a youtube video of this song.

Now, I'm a bit of a late adopter (still have iTunes 9, I know).... but what exactly is the point of Ping? I'm stuggling to see any use besides being me-too social networking bloatware.

*THANK YOU*! Works!

How annoying though, what's wrong with Apple forcing Ping on its customers like this?
