Error

I have 10.6.8 installed, and itunes 10.4 won't update
"error" every time
already tried the software updater and download on the apple site

I would have bet money that iTunes would not see a Cocoa rewrite without a badly-needed UI re-do from the ground up. (Seriously, those non-sizable-scrolling panes-within-panes for iPod/iOS devices? Those would be frowned upon even in a web site, much less an app!)

Glad I didn’t bet

Who on earth needs to run iTunes full screen or "without distractions"? If there's one Apple app that's designed to be shoved into the background while it's being used, surely it's iTunes.

You can still run iTunes in the background, and the keyboard buttons will still control it.

But what about when you’re organizing your massive library? Making playlists and updating tags? Viewing tons of columns of metadata? The best thing about iTunes is its sheer power and flexibility, and when you’re using those tools, your needs are different from simple playback. I often maximize iTunes as close to full-screen as possible on my 24” display. I can see why having a fullscreen option is nice. Those who don’t need it will just ignore it.

so who has the lazier devs? apple or adobe?

My understanding is that Apple is perpetually understaffed, and so it's not a matter of having developers being lazy, simply that everyone is so busy working on other things that no one could spare a second (or days, as was more likely the case,) to rewrite iTunes.

Question: With me only having 3GB of RAM, will I notice any performance increase with the 64-bit version of iTunes?

I guess they're going to support different platforms? Just downloaded for my Windows box and my ancient G4 PowerBook. The PowerBook had the following message:

"What's new in iTunes 10.4

iTunes 10.4 is now designed for OS X Lion.

You can now use iTunes with OS X Lion's new Full-Screen App capability, which allows you to use iTunes and other apps without distractions. Navigate between your full-screen apps with a simple gesture.

Note: iTunes is now a 64-bit Cocoa application on OS X Lion and includes a number of important stability and performance improvements. Some iTunes plug-ins may no longer be compatible with this version of iTunes. Please contact the plug-in developer for an updated plug-in compatible with iTunes 10.4."

Nothing like that on the Windows version. I am assuming both of these versions remain 32 bit.

windows version you can download 32 or 64 bit. The one on my laptop is 64bit. Windows has had a 64 bit version of iTunes for quite a while.

Either way, I was able to download for both my Windows 7 (X64) and my PowerBook G4 running OS X 10.5.8.

It's not just about the cost of Lion.

A lot of people won't be able to upgrade straight away because software and/or peripherals which they rely on won't work with Lion.

I doubt it will be a "lot" of people. I would think that there are very few people who are still holding on to old Rosetta apps or have some esoteric peripherals that won't work with Lion. There will be some people in that group, but a lot, no.

Halfway to sorting the horrible A-Z organisation.
It still goes A-Z-#, but it's nice to see bands like A Perfect Circle or A Tribe Called Quest back up at the top rather than under P or T respectively.

Life is tight on a resident budget (especially with a family), and you would be surprised how well a DP G5 Mac still runs :/

According to the iTunes Download page, the minimum system requirement is still Mac OS X 10.5 and G4 and G5 processors are still supported. However, Software update on my PPC Leopard Mac Mini only shows 10.3.1 as an available upgrade. Hrmm..

Actually from time to time, I like to browse the store or edit my media, it's great for that.
