64-bit and Cocoa!?

Who on earth needs to run iTunes full screen or "without distractions"? If there's one Apple app that's designed to be shoved into the background while it's being used, surely it's iTunes.

You've never used a Mac hooked up to your TV as your main entertainment center I'm guessing.

This is the one thing I was waiting for to make the experience totally smooth and not "computer-ish."

Kylo took care of my full screen browsing and media web apps (netflix etc), Hulu Desktop is obviously a beautiful fullscreen app, and the 3rd component, iTunes, always felt clunky, out of place, and hard to use on a TV in comparison to the rest of the apps.

Downloading now. Can't wait to see if it makes the media center experience as smooth and polished as I hope it will.

No Difference...

I've been running the iTunes 10.5 beta since wwdc and never realized it was 64 bit or Cocoa until now. I've seen no difference. iTunes is no faster or responsive than it was before. That said, I've never really had a problem with iTunes except for the occasional slow down When doing a sync or scrolling through apps.

I'm glad that everyone is thrilled with this, but please give me an example of where this has made any difference.

One thing I hate about iTunes is that you still can't do anything while iTunes is changing tags. That seems like a very outdated behavior when everything is now multitasked.

Except that OS X fullscreen doesn't work too well with multiple monitors.

Avid Pro Tools will is not ready for Lion, Serato Scratch for DJ, not ready for Lion. I'm willing to bet there are a lot of people in my boat that will not be ugrading right now.

Exactly, audio apps are a perfect example. The only DAW I've seen that seems OK on 10.7 is Logic 9, all the other ones I've checked (including a number of major plugin developers) either say there are issues or recommend waiting because they haven't finished testing.

Logic 8 doesn't even work, it won't even start.

Precisely.

Sure, but that's a strawman argument - nobody has said that iTunes needs to use more ram. There are other performance benefits to running in 64 bit.

That's not an "except" ... if you read my post, you'd see that I have the Mac hooked up to a TV. A single TV. So there aren't multiple monitors. Your point is ... pointless.

That said, I think OS X fullscreen works GREAT with multiple monitors. Care to give an example, or were you just being a Negative Nancy?

Can anyone confirm whether or not SRS iWOW (3.1) works with OS X Lion and iTunes 10.4?

Thanks!

I downloaded iTunes 10.4 only to find out that iWow 3.1has been disabled as it's not compatible. I plan to check the SRS site and see if there's one available.

The bar at the top has lost its slightly lighter and brighter gradient, which is unfortunate as i really liked it. It now looks dull and drab!

For $30 everyone should.

Let's check the trouble-free installation guarantee from Apple... oh, there doesn't appear to be one. This Internet-based installation looks like an IT disaster waiting to happen, which is why the typical 6-month sandbox plan is still in effect before pushing the new OS X to systems that are critical to business operations.

Apps won't update.

Just downloaded and installed 10.4 and found I can't update apps anymore. It says I have 9 apps that have free updates to download but clicking on the "Download All Free Updates" button does nothing except give me the stripey bar at the top for about 1 second...then nothing. No downloads. Anyone else found this or is it just a coincidence and the iTunes app store is having problems anyway?

I Disagree completely. I'm a big fan of the Cover view, lot's of selection Columns, the Column Browser and use many playlists. So preferentially all should be visible. So iTunes always ate away already 80% of my pixels, when it was the front window. The only way of easily interrupting my workflow was constantly hiding and showing iTunes, since there like always at least 5 finder windows, a CAD or Photoshop, Activity Monitor, two browser windows, VLC instance, a shell, and some other variable clutter (like XCode, the Last fm Scrobbler, Pages, Numbers, Anki ... - I know that **** eats away ram, but I got 8 GiB, since 4 GiB doesn't suffices ACad's hunger from time to time). Now Lion offers an, in my opinion, way more natural alternative (working on a MBP) to hinding/showing without the issue of ever forgetting to hide iTunes and instead clicking directly on the Application I left off from (resulting in bringing all windows off that Application to the front, and screwing up the last workspaces layout ).

Also: iTunes is way more responsive right now. Previously, iTunes nearly always got stuck when trying to crossfade a music video with a song, or did it hang when scrolling or selecting another playlist. All those issues seem in the past right now :).

I just experienced the exact same thing.

After updating iTunes, I opened it and played around.
I then came to the Apps section, and checked to see if any updates were available. There were three, and I clicked the "Download All Free Updates". But it acted just like you describe. I had to click on "Get Update" on each app.

Furthermore I'm pretty convinced that in the previous version, when browsing around in the iTunes app store, I could use gestures to navigate back to previous pages.
This I cannot do anymore. And when I click on the back arrow, it doesn't take me back to the previous page, but all the way back to "My Apps Update" page where it tells me that there are no updates available.

It seems they have released this version of iTunes a bit too early.

If it's in anyway a relief: you can always use your keyboard shortcuts for music/video control in iTunes (even when iTunes is editing tags).

I think the reason why you can't edit and use the GUI at the same time has to do with one reason: user experience. When changing (large amounts) of ID-tags, the operation can last a while. But for the changes to be visible, the database has to be reread and reinterpreted every time a change takes place. This results in even slower performance.

Windows support is also available for iTunes 10.4!

Also am I late or has Safari 5.1 been out for a while now too?

Album art in finder bug

One new feature the upgrade to iTunes seems to have brought back is the "embedded album art not showing up in Finder" bug from v9.

When you take an MP3 without album art, let iTunes find it, drag the art to the desktop and drag it back to the file (thereby embedding it), the icon doesn't change to the album art in the finder. That pisses me off. Took Apple like 4 months+ to fix last time. Hopefully Lion (?) will fix this?

Anyone else experience this? Other ways of embedding art?

And those would be???

The x64 instruction set has more registers than the x86 instruction set. This means the compiler doesn't have to hit memory as often, and programs can be faster. (x86 has 5 available integer registers, x64 has 13 available.)

It also has a simpler matrix of options for instruction sets, so programs can be compiled using faster features without worrying about older CPUs without support for those - the baselevel is much higher, without as much cruft.

Even 32-bit programs use a lot of 64-bit integer arithmetic - this is faster in x64 mode. (Most sizes/offsets in the file systems are 64-bit, so 64-bit integers are needed to access files.)
