So… what do we lose with this update?

Another site poster noted that the radio streams are gone. I use these as much as anything in iTunes. :(

Can anyone confirm, 'cos I don't have a late model iDevice and I'm not upgrading to lose that feature if it's truly gone???

And if so, I guess gone because less popular than podcasts (I went through 10 pages and no one else mentioned this), but no way to monetize (or monetize sufficiently - I don't know if the streamers ever paid Apple?), so sayonara radio feeds.....???

Reverting to previous version

Third time i ask this: How to roll back to 10.7? Is time machine enough?

So, as an experiment I tried reverting: it's not as clean cut as just replacing the new version with the one in your backup. I didn't use Time Machine, but a clone, but the principle is the same.

  • When you first try replacing it, you'll need to change the iTunes.app permissions or send the new iTunes to the trash, since OS X wont let you replace it as easily.
  • You'll also need to bring back the old iTunes libraries too, or it wont open.
  • Once replaced, every time I open iTunes it gives me a bunch of weird errors, the most troubling one being not recognizing my iPhone...

I used to have my library configured in two mac so I could manage my iPhone and iPods in both.... I guess that's broken too.

So, there you have it: if you updated and really can't use the new version, hence revert, you're in for some fun if you have an iPhone. My advise: perhaps wait a bit until all major bugs are identified and solved before updating and be aware of the differences before upgrading... but in the long run I guess there's not much of a choice. Listening to the Stones right now, two songs come to mind: Satisfaction and You Can't Always Get What You Want...

I guess I'll go to the new version again just to save me trouble with my phone - not that I care to much since I seldom use iTunes, only to manage my phone and to stream music to my AppleTV.

Hope this helps.

Cheers!

Cant understand the excitment

Its just a new face for the same program.

Itunes was great, still is....but honestly cant understand the excitment around its new version. Nothing completly different, for a non iOS user, its quite the same it was last time i used it.

Still cant figure if i like more the design like it is right now.

Has anyone tried the "Pick up where you left off. We'll save your place."

Start a movie, TV show, podcast, iTunes U lesson, or audiobook on one device. Pause anytime, and you can pick it up later on another device.

Is this only for purchased movies, tv shows, etc?

There is nothing online about this. I'm thinking its only from stuff purchased in the store.

So, with album art gone from the sidebar, how do we add album art to multiple tracks at once, or copy/paste album art between songs? (I'm talking about songs where downloading the art from iTunes either gets it wrong or comes up blank.)

You should still be able to use Get Info -- select multiple tracks, do Command-I, then click on the artwork box and Command-V (Paste) your copied artwork image. Not optimal, definitely. It seems like they think everyone just has iTunes music now.

I'd argue that it's a step forward for a significant majority of iTunes users, and only a step back for some. While that may not be best for you, it's probably the best overall direction. Most people who want to actively DJ will use a separate program anyway.

You mean we may be forced to use a separate program. But adding up next is nice but it does not do what DJ does. It seems both could be included. DJ is one click. And a much simple interface thats not a separate window.

Hmm, double click to minimize seems to be broken.. Except for that everything seems fine once I got it set up right (list view with sidepanel)...

Is that how it is these days?

When Apple implements stuff originally, its like... "oh great..!! i use this long time coming feature all the time (not specific to only iTunes), and then when Apple gets rid of something, like for example Ping... we all just accept it as time as time goes on...?

Wow..... I really need to get out of that MS era.

I think it's just text being taken out of context. An internet thing. End of the day its a freaking music player. I noticed the negatives started pouring in here and there cause this and that so I checked other forums about Spotify and other players and sure enough...

whine, whine, whine, whine, whine, whine.... etc....

Internet is so negative, needs some prozac or hard liquor.

Yay. My dream of having fluffy little clouds all over the sidebar has finally come true. They're so fluffy I'm gonna die. I only wish there was a Hello Kitty skin or a My Little Pony skin so I could smile while I listen to Dr Seuss and play with my dolly. Her name is Polly Prissy Pants.

OK this is horrible!!

While playing an album with the new iTunes on my 15" MBPR and in parallel scrolling in this thread sometimes the song lags in playing!

Wtf?!

Thanks; this settles it for me then. I m NOT upgrading to that POS now...at least will wait til all my questions are clarified, such as list view aspects, whether bit rates can still be easily seen etc.

iTunes 10.7 is rock-solid for me and my iMac; no bugs, no crashes, no slowness...and no reason to upgrade.

Radio streams are still there. Listening to them right now.

Well... it works ok on Apple TV anyway when watching podcasts (sometimes), renting movies, (all the time), as I only watch on Apple TV.... We have 2 in the house, sharing the same account, and it resumes on the other, when parents wondering why "who's been watching this" type question .... :)

Givin' that its comes from the same place, i don't see why it wouldn't work in the app.

The only minor issue I've had with iTunes 11 is ITunes Match wouldn't upload new songs. Kept hanging. But all I had to do was turn iTunes Match off and then back on. Working perfectly now. The new look is awesome. Love it. Changes I'd been hoping for.

Just noticed a fixed bug: Mini player no longer jumps to the middle of the screen if you put it too close to a screen corner, then restore/minimize it again. :)

Hmmm, if you click on the little albumart icon in the LCD window you get this:

EDIT: You can actually make it bigger/smaller, and close the main iTunes window/mini player altogether and use this as a mini player :p

dont know if this is new but: its now possible to stream to more than one device over airplay

I think you a bit too worried. When was the last time an update completely hosed a system? Sure, a glitch here and there, but it gets sorted pretty quickly. After all, its iTunes, not mission critical for most of us.

The update to iOS 3 turned my iPhone into a brick for 24 hours because Apple's update servers crashed on the release day.

To be fair Ping was dead on arrival.

Re DJ; There IS no replacement. I read this post elsewhere and it illustrates one thing DJ did that iTunes 11 can no longer do:

I have playlists labeled xxx xxxx xxxxx.. During the party in iTunes DJ I would simply change the playlist and the next song would pull from the right playlist on the fly. I also could do this WITHOUT interrupting the song currently playing. I am not sure how to replicate this functionality in iTunes 11.

The interface seems to work ok but please bring back the Party Shuffle / iTunes DJ playlist.

to complainers: go to apple feed and let them know.

complaining here won't change anything. we need lot of people to tell them about the problems...and surely they will fix that.
