I'm sure that killing of older iOS device functionality wasn't a factor in their decision to roll out this update at all ...Not liking this at all, particularly since I use an old ipad 2 (work horse of the ipads) and removing the app store and apps off my mac hard drive will effectively render the ipad useless as older apps will no longer be available.
This effectively puts apple in a position of rendering your unit totally useless. Recognize the ipad 2 is old but I would rather make the decision as to when I want a new unit & not apple.
Yes as a beta tester with NO WARNING beta 5 of IOS 11 removed 949 APPs. My iPad Pro backed up to my computer as normal then the message popped up “removed 949 apps not compatible”. Holy crap! These were maticulously places in hundreds of catogory folders. Now just “gone?” And now THATS my backup?? Oh crap!

I'm going to keep suggesting that iOS Apps have been moved to the the Mac App Store in High Seirra.
Yup, perfect. That section also implies that you can do the same with old versions of apps.
If you have media on your computer that you can't redownload from the App Store or iTunes Store directly on your iOS device, such as custom ringtones or iOS apps, you can drag and drop the media from your computer to your iOS device using iTunes.
this hasn't been possible for years, since apple introduced app slices. you can download whole apps on previous versions of itunes from the store - but it is not possible to backup downloaded apps from your device.
i have run up against this problem many times. i have to take my device somewhere with fast wifi to make it work. i once resorted to using tens of gigabytes of cellular data just so that i could restore when i didn't have any other option.
If I regularly put pdf files on my iPod Touch in iTunes, for use in the Adobe Acrobat Reader iOS app, how will I be able to do so now?
Cached content is a feature of Mac OS X server. I'm not sure running OS X server is a valid workaround for this problem.
Interesting that the update left the files there in the Mobile Applications folder taking up space. Not a problem to go and delete them, but how many would know to do that?

It works with PDFs and ePubs. Thank you! - Post this in the iTunes forum and sticky it! =DThanks AstroRob for the link: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201593
Here's an explanation from Apple about side loading apps ringtones etc...
Manually add items from your computer
If you have media on your computer that you can't redownload from the App Store or iTunes Store directly on your iOS device, such as custom ringtones or iOS apps, you can drag and drop the media from your computer to your iOS device using iTunes.
- Connect your device to your computer.
- Open iTunes. Make sure that you have the latest version.
- On your computer, find the item you want to add to your device. If you're looking for Apps, Tones, or Books (for Windows) that previously appeared in your iTunes library, you can find them in your iTunes media folder.
- Drag the item from your computer to your iOS device in the left sidebar of iTunes.

What if you made your own custom ringtones?
