Not liking this at all, particularly since I use an old ipad 2 (work horse of the ipads) and removing the app store and apps off my mac hard drive will effectively render the ipad useless as older apps will no longer be available.

This effectively puts apple in a position of rendering your unit totally useless. Recognize the ipad 2 is old but I would rather make the decision as to when I want a new unit & not apple.
I'm sure that killing of older iOS device functionality wasn't a factor in their decision to roll out this update at all ... :)

Yes as a beta tester with NO WARNING beta 5 of IOS 11 removed 949 APPs. My iPad Pro backed up to my computer as normal then the message popped up “removed 949 apps not compatible”. Holy crap! These were maticulously places in hundreds of catogory folders. Now just “gone?” And now THATS my backup?? Oh crap!

Of course you had warning. You were running a beta OS. Zero sympathy.

Yes, you can download previous purchases from iCloud, even if they are no longer in the store... for now. When Apple realizes that iOS 11 adoption rates are lower than expected because people want to keep their 32 bit apps (that are no longer in the store) around, you can kiss them goodbye.

Never forget! It's Apple's App Store, and Apple's iCloud. What you can do with it will always be controlled by them. If you don't like it you can throw away you iPhone and all the apps you've bought and go to a different platform.
[doublepost=1505269856][/doublepost]Avoid iOS 11 at all costs!

You have been warned!

I'm pretty sure tethered caching only will work if the apple IDs used to sign into the store are either (1) identical or (2) part of a family share. The apps will be wrapped in FairPlay.

And I'm not positive about (2), because I haven't read anything about how FairPlay works in the context of Family Sharing. I vaguely remember having to authorize iTunes for each device's Apple ID, but I might be confused by the pre-family sharing app install process.

Anyway, it'd be nice to hear if this works.

It's quite an amazing update! They got rid of the junk and are focusing on what's important... music! iTunes already feels snappier and no longer lags when switching between the store and the library. Apple really is improving everything, from not only the hardware, but the software too! I couldn't be happier with Apple and the decisions made in 2017. I don't see why people are complaining in all honesty.

yah the 4s i use for audiobooks upstairs in a 30pin speakerdock is sure looking at eol now isn't it.

man i dunno. i haven't even taken a machine to Sierra yet. I was going to wait until I bought my next MacBook Pro which I'd buy with High Sierra release .3 or whatever already on it.

Not sure what to do here. I don't like getting behind in iTunes because each time they release something now there's something been subtracted that I have to figure a workaround for. This time it seems much worse.

Anyway looks like i need to take one of my laptops to Sierra to experiement with multiple iTunes libraries using iTunes 12.7, what a mess. A project for some weekend in October, the heck with it for now.

Honestly between the High Sierra beta and now this new streamlined iTunes, my "old" 2010 Mac Pro has been feeling like a new machine. I don't miss any of the bloat that was removed and I appreciate how responsive iTunes is now. It's about damn time.

I'm going to keep suggesting that iOS Apps have been moved to the the Mac App Store in High Seirra.

The shot of the dialog box in the story suggests otherwise:

"...use the new App Store or Sound Settings on iOS to redownload them without your Mac."

Most iOS users never connect their devices to a computer, but for those who do, 12.7 is a major retrograde.

Apple used to be about being different, or standing up against the Man. Now it is The Man, and strict regimens must be followed. No exceptions.

this hasn't been possible for years, since apple introduced app slices. you can download whole apps on previous versions of itunes from the store - but it is not possible to backup downloaded apps from your device.

i have run up against this problem many times. i have to take my device somewhere with fast wifi to make it work. i once resorted to using tens of gigabytes of cellular data just so that i could restore when i didn't have any other option.

Up until now, you didn't have to. You just let iTunes download your purchases, it gets the un-thinned versions, they get thinned when they're sent to your device.

Looks like I may be downgrading. I added all the books I need, but what about the next set I want to load? Hmm....

Guess I can have Safari on iPhone download them but... I'll figure it out =/

Cached content is a feature of Mac OS X server. I'm not sure running OS X server is a valid workaround for this problem.

You didn't read the article. Not that the article is anything but a joke workaround, but it's really obvious you didn't.

Interesting that the update left the files there in the Mobile Applications folder taking up space. Not a problem to go and delete them, but how many would know to do that?

As opposed to Apple having to listen to people whine about them being deleted? No, they left them on purpose, the clueless masses didn't have anything there in the first place.

If you have media on your computer that you can't redownload from the App Store or iTunes Store directly on your iOS device, such as custom ringtones or iOS apps, you can drag and drop the media from your computer to your iOS device using iTunes.

wait wait... you mean its like... iTunes? Like how it used to be when I could just plug in my device and drag stuff onto it and not have to jump through eight million hoops like I have been since like iTunes 7? HALLELUJAH!

Here's an explanation from Apple about side loading apps ringtones etc...

Manually add items from your computer
If you have media on your computer that you can't redownload from the App Store or iTunes Store directly on your iOS device, such as custom ringtones or iOS apps, you can drag and drop the media from your computer to your iOS device using iTunes.

  1. Connect your device to your computer.
  2. Open iTunes. Make sure that you have the latest version.
  3. On your computer, find the item you want to add to your device. If you're looking for Apps, Tones, or Books (for Windows) that previously appeared in your iTunes library, you can find them in your iTunes media folder.
  4. Drag the item from your computer to your iOS device in the left sidebar of iTunes.

Ringtones are easy. You just Airdrop mp3 to device.

Btw, Apple Music definitely needs to focus more on music, playlist and profile sharing.

I have been able to share playlists but not individual songs. I also want to be more social with friends on Apple Music because it's an even better way to get playlists than Apple curated playlists.

It works with PDFs and ePubs. Thank you! - Post this in the iTunes forum and sticky it! =D
