Well this is a bit annoying. I have over the years used four different app stores. Geo-locked apps are sadly still a thing. In iTunes, I could keep these apps around and sync them when needed. Now I will have to go through the rather cumbersome process of changing the app store on the phone.

Great decision Apple. Who downloads iOS apps on their Mac anyway?

Anything that removes bloat from iTunes is good for me.

The installer for this version of iTunes is about 1MB smaller than the one for the 12.6.2 version (not much of a savings on a DMG that is about 250MB.) I am not happy with this version for 2 reasons
  1. I had a lot of ring tones that I had created which made it easy to tell what the incoming call, iMessage or email was plus I am often the only one not reaching for my phone when out with a group because my ring tones were unique.
  2. I have an iPad mini with only 16GB of storage & had worked out what were effectively "playlists" for apps which made it easier to manage storage.
I will be reinstalling 12.6.2 & restoring from Time Machine.

Omg forgot about autoupdate and got automatically updated to 12.7.... Well for all of you still with some apps which are no longer on AppStore: I figured out that you can drag n drop that App into your iOS device and it will be synced! The only thing is that we won't be able to update any of the apps on the computer anymore.

I’m surprised people don’t care about the core issue. Ringtones, etc are fine but right now with the new iTunes there’s no way to install/update an app over cellular if it’s bigger than 100Mb in size. You can do it only via wi-fi. But there’re a lot of places in the world without wi-fi or any other connection except cellular. So if you happen to live in such location you’re forever cut off from bigger apps. Unbelievable they didn’t think about it.

If there is no other connection, how did you download it before 12.7?

But now, if I can't just plug my iPhone into my Mac and have everything backup, sync up, update, etc... but I have to move things on and off the iPhone manually (as the comments thus far seem to suggest)... then it's not an ecosystem anymore.

Everthing is backed up, you don't have to do anything manually.

If you need to restore from a backup, the apps themselves will download on the iPhone, but that has been the case for a while (I guess app thinning is the reason there).

Wait, what? How the hell do I handle ibooks that are not purchased from Apple? I have about 300 books that I have purchased from other sources, most as epub format, including resource books, uni and work related titles and novels. That was the one and ONLY reason I have an iPad, so what the hell do I do now?

If you use your device(s) for more than just fb and chat, this will be a problem. Especially if you are the one keeping the family fleet of iOS devices up to date.

Sure, if you aren’t a power user and only have a few apps installed, this is no biggie. But for a user like me, who have bought a gazillion apps over the last decade and keep at least 150 installed on any of our devices, just the thought of regular clean installs is making me sweat! I did my 7+ and ipp 10.5 just last week, as iOS 11 beta 10 arrived. Scrolled through the apps on pc iTunes, selected the ones I needed and arranged them in folders. Clicked on Sync and left the pc do the work. 1-2 hours later all my apps, photos and music was in place, and I could continue with the next device. The workload has increased by a huge margin, now that I have to search for, download and install each and every app manually. What a nightmare.

Managing apps on a pc/mac vs on-device was one of the greatest advantages over android and now it is gone. On the same day that Apple crossed the $1.650 price for an iPhone in my country. Not a great day to be an Apple user...

Custom tones working fine as usual here, what are u talking about..
What I am talking about is I can no longer create custom ringtones, add it to the library and then sync it to the device, including deleting the existing ringtones or managing them. Just like what this guy finds out:
The only weird thing is that there is no way to delete a ring tone from this interface.

I do not have a fleet of iOS devices to manage. But I am surely not using iOS devices just for fb and chat. I love to exploit the full potential of each device and I am against the entire "cloud" BS. This change will push me further away from Apple ecosystem. Once they remove local iTunes library completely, I will leave the iOS system and move to Android, to continue another struggle.

The iBooks app? I've certainly added plenty of my own epub's and PDF's to it.

How do you go about installing a ring tone that you have made on your Mac now?

goto itunes and select on my device on the left then click on tones then on your mac drag and drop the tones you created into the tones section on your device it will copy them over to your device.

The same goes for any books you have that isnt brought.

What if you made your own custom ringtones?

I made a ton of custom ringtones in iTunes, and unfortunately lost them all last year when my iTunes would not properly restore to my new iPhone 7+. Fortunately, I found you can create custom ringtones using the GarageBand app. There are lots of great how-to videos on YouTube. It is simple and straightforward. Kind of a bummer to have to recreate them all, but at least it works. Hope that helps.

If you use the "Apple Configurator 2" app, you can still download and update apps from multiple Apple IDs - as you also could with iTunes.

1. Connect the device with USB

2. Sign in under Account:

3. Choose Update in the menu:

A more detailed description can be found here: http://krypted.com/apple-configurator/upgrade-devices-and-apps-using-apple-configurator-2/

The Apps are downloaded to:
Code:
~/Library/Group Containers/K36BKF7T3D.group.com.apple.configurator/Library/Caches/Assets/TemporaryItems/MobileApps/

So, if you want to download an app to both your iPhone and iPad, you've now got to download it twice? Hopefully, as noted above, iTunes still keeps copies locally.

What of switching stores? The iOS 11 App Store doesn't offer any means to switch accounts, seemingly locking it to the account specified in the system preferences. Presumably that's now (for now?) got to be accomplished in the iTunes Store.

Such a misleading comment, you can freely switch accounts in the app store app by pressing the man shaped icon in the top right corner......

And BTW, compressed app downloaded on iTunes for mac is around 200mb, if you were to download that app on iOS, it would be downloaded uncompressed, around 600mb.

Not true. App downloads on iOS are also compressed. Also, if you are talking about app updates, iTunes will download the full app but on iOS, only the changed assets are downloaded which potentially may only be a few MB for say a 200MB app.

I agree for restoring apps to multiple devices or for bulk updating a lot of devices, being able to do this via iTunes, especially with constrained ISP bandwidth, is a real benefit.

How does one sync documents... I use iTunes to sync about 30GGB of books/comics to my iPad. How does that sync happen now?
I guess they suggest opting for iCloud. It does seem to me that somer older iOS versions will be crippled with that move.
