Obviously to encourage impulse buying. I can't count the number of times I've picked a small set of songs in my shopping cart and ultimately ended up removing some before purchasing.

Check your preferences. iTunes updates seem to reset some settings for me, like the "Keep my iTunes folder organized" setting stuff I have hidden like the TV shows section or Podcasts because I don't use them, etc.

Removal of the shopping cart must have also been because of people like me. I used my shopping cart as sort of a wish list that I would save to and pick from.. reason why is because it was always synced no mater which computer I was on. I had an issue with this a while back where songs had been deleted from the apple store but were in my shopping cart which caused my iTunes to fail... boo that the shopping cart is gone

Can anyone tell me the point of genius mix? It just seems like a bunch of random songs from a genre. Isn't that the same thing as browsing by genre and hitting shuffle?

I sure hope the algorithm is more complicated than that.

Okay I mistakenly thought it was only playing things from a genre. But it played a song under Soundtrack that wasn't from a soundtrack. Probably because it sounds like a soundtrack song.

This feature actually could be nice.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but they've made some changes to the consolidate library function. The main change being the addition of a new option to move everything in to separate folders within the iTunes library, so all music is now moved to a Music folder. You want to be careful with this option if you backup your library with Time Machine.

Best feature for me though is the speed increase. I have a large library (60k songs) and it was painfully slow when adding or updating songs, whilst it still isn't instantaneous it is a lot quicker than it used to be which will save me a massive amount of time.

WHY IS IT SOOOOO DAMN SLOW!!!!! I can't even perform an easy drag and drop and its beach ballin' all the way!
------

Follow-up.

Was impatient, iTunes took a year to Analyze GAPLESS playing.

I believe if you go to 'Perferences' and change the importing settings to 'Apple Lossless' you'll then be able to upgrade songs in your library to that.

No, what he's saying is, you can't upgrade a lossy file. Converting an MP3/AAC to Wav, AIFF, Apple Lossless is just creating a bigger file for no reason. You can't add bits that have been taken away.

Does anyone else have the dark line I mentioned? Right through the middle of the song info window, you can see it clearly running through the Apple logo in my screenshot.

See here:

It's a gloss effect.

exactly, it's meant to look like a glass/plastic window like on a stereo system that shows the info for the tracks etc

You can now upgrade ( or downgrade ) the quality of the MP3s in your collection. Meaning no re-inserting your CDs one by one. But this does not work on iTunes bought music. Select a song (or group of songs) and then under advance there's an option for "Convert to AAC" ( or whatever your input settings are.) This is REALLY handy. Like an iTunes plus upgrade for your own collection.

edit: I dont think this is new but it's still awesome.

Since when is iTunes magic? It's not going to upscale lossy formats, you're just inflating the file size with no increase in quality.

It looks like a gloss effect designed by a 5 year old let loose on Paint for Windows ... it looks like a big dark bar that's not meant to be there.

It runs the full length of the application window, and when you play music the top of the "dark bar" cuts through words, etc ... it's just so untidy.

I would agree with others, u need to check your monitor settings. It's not that dark, it's obviously a glass effect and it does NOT run the full length of the application; your eyes are being tricked into thinking it does, cover up the info window with your hand and then you'll see it's not running the full length at all

In the store, use the drop down next to your login id and select Wish List.

This takes the place of the shopping cart.

BTW, the songs I previously had in my shopping cart are now in my wish list.

To my knowledge im not talking rubbish, hence why its my opinion. thus i said "personally i like it", you dont have to like my view on the itunes look lol, but you can respect it much like i will respect the fact that you "DONT" like it. Im just mildly surprised that there are so many people who dont like it.

I think the white grid view, doesnt look any worse than the grey one that was there before hand, as i said personal preference- we all got different strokes.

Last time i checked, itunes wasnt professional, its a media player, is there a degree of how a music/video/radio player should look?
hmm..

PTP

Spot on with my thinking; glad you put it so well.

help! i can't figure out how to make the plus sign in the upper left switch to the miniplayer in itunes 9. it use to be you click it and it would become the miniplayer...now it expands the window...much frustration! help!

Surround sound still broken in iTunes 9

How come no one is complaining that surround sound is still broken in iTunes 9? If you buy or rent a movie in iTunes 9 that has surround sound, you have to choose the stereo track for it to work properly. If you choose the surround track, I get nothing. Nada!! These same content work fine in AppleTV. So, Quicktime or iTunes or whatever decodes the Dolby Digital 5.1 content is broken on the Mac and Windows. However, no one is complaining in various forums. Isn't this a big deal! Come on.

I actually didn't read up on the changes to iTunes 9 and prior to download so it was a great surprise when I clicked on Applications and saw a screen layout of my iPod Touch and it was just so natural to look at the screen and think, "can I drag the icons around and also to another page?" Freakin' Sweet!

As said before: Hold the Option Key while Clicking on the "Green Traffic Light" It will put you in Mini Player Mode.

Well that certainly sucks. I was planning on converting my entire music library to that format, thanks for the save.

Converting Lossless (Wav, Apple Lossless) to MP3/AAC removes certain frequencies and bits to make the file smaller. Converting that MP3/AAC back to lossless can't bring those bits and frequencies back in.

If you have the CD's you can import those CD's again.

Spinning ball from hell anyone?

Updated from Software Update. When I started iTunes 9, it said that is adusting the music for gapless play, and every time, somewhere between 500 and the 4700 songs I have, I got a spinning ball that never goes away no matter how long I wait.

Let it run for over an hour once and the spinning ball never went away. I cannot even force quit!!! I have to to a hard restart. I have tried this five times now and I cannot seem to avoid the spinning beach ball...

Anyone else having a similar problem?

I am running OS10.5.8 on a 24" iMac.
