I'm not doubting that CLIs can be more efficient once you've learned them. But there absolutely is a steep learning curve that isn't always worth it. With GUIs, you don't necessarily know what to do right away either, but there's a chance of finding it out by yourself, without any prior knowledge apart from common sense. And it is far easier for most people to remember how tasks are performed. We are visual beings after all...

If you've ever supported any kind of Unix box and software made to run on it, you'd know[...]

Kind of my point... :)

Ugh why does every thread have to become a nerd pissing contest? What does any of this squabbling do other than to cause strife and derail threads?

Now go ahead, flame away.

And my point is that the learning curve isn't as steep as many make it out to be and that it is always worth it. ;)

If secretaries could use DOS back in the late 80s/early 90s, I seriously doubt "The Internet Generation" can't figure out a few simple commands.

They absolutely can. They just don't want to and don't need to.

I just feel Apple should get TRIM running on non-apple drives. I'm aware of TRIM coming in Lion, just hasn't been confirmed if works on non-apple drives.

I'm aware of the shortcuts, but I still think it's stupid you can't right click and cut, then paste. The average user could benefit.

I guess you're new to OS X?

Hi,
Have exactly the same problem here... It seems that the Java preferences application has not been updated from the last build (DP2)... which may be cause the problem. Very very annoying for me btw...
Anyone in this forum for a miracle and get Java working on DP3 ?:)

Just sign into your Apple Developer account and download the Java Runtime for OS 10.7. Its listed in the additional downloads section. As of right now downloading Java through the automatic downloader is broken. A manual install of the 10.7 runtime is all that will work as of right now.

Ok, Got it. Thank you for your reply. :)

a few little things:

-i'm loving that the tabs in full-screen safari are always shown now. it used to drive me insane moving the cursor to the top just to switch through tabs.

- can see 'cut' in the edit menu but can't actually seem to actually use it in finder (it's always greyed-out). ideas?

- would kill to have an address book and calendar that doesn't look like a real-world replica. what is this, os x for kids?!

- can somebody explain the difference between clean up by and arrange by? i'm extremely confused...

- still wish there was two-finger swipe to navigate (especially in finder) with the magic mouse (and trackpad). it drives me insane when i switch from SL to L and all i get is rubber-banding when i try to go back and forth. this is a big deal for me!

- everything is much, much, much faster.

- my gmail calendar delegations stopped appearing in ical with the last preview update. after a few furious feedback logs they've suddenly reappeared in the latest release. yay!

- under 'all my files' in the finder, are files that i've deleted and emptied from the trash. the system knows they don't exist (tells me the file cannot be found, alias, etc when i try to open them) yet the preview of the file is still there. this is a big problem! especially if someone has sensitive documents and pictures, etc.

and that's it for now...

Yes, bought my first Mac a month ago, and Cut&Paste and Auto Align are things I really miss too.

Before you start with "But there is Cut&Paste", I'm not talking about Cut&Paste in TextEdit but in the Finder, always opening two Finder windows to move a file is quite annoying.

You can use Option+Drag and drop for copy/Command + Drag and drop for move together with spring loaded folders. Also this works fine in column view.

I switched from windows and never missed that cut option in windows.

I'm curious about this, too. I will never use it, but for some odd reason it's apparently something that keeps people from switching from Windows. It'll be nice to silence a few nay-sayers.

Oh, and there is now Merge in addition to Replace when dragging and dropping same name folders. Spiffy.

Clean Up means "snap to grid," as in it cleans up your messy file placement in icon view, incl. Desktop. Arrange By is now called Sort By. Hopefully that's self explanatory.

For whatever reason, you now have to turn that on with the Trackpad so I'd assume it might be the same with Magic Mouse. Defaults have 3 and 4 fingers swapped now (4 fingers navigates, 3 fingers changes spaces). Check your System Preferences.

I personally hate the All My Files. Totally useless. And it's the default Finder view? Not cool. I changed my Finder preferences and removed it from my sidebar.

The grayed out cut option is there in Snow Leopard too, not sure why it's always grayed out either.

Does it also support GLSL 1.3? Otherwise the new extensions are largely unusable.

It supports GLSL 1.5.

When they say that it 'supports opengl 3.2'... They mean the core spec. Which includes GLSL 1.5.
Instead of just adding extensions, they put in an entire new framework. They kept the old one so all of the current programs/games continue to work, and also added a new core which is the clean API with no legacy support.

ps. Hello from Auckland.

Why do people say that the Finder is so bad? I don't have any problems with it, it's a file browser and it's not really supposed to do anything special. The only thing that I find bad about it is the way you arrange icons and that the window size and the sidebar size is often unique for every folder. I wish all Finder windows were simply the same.

Apparently Lion fixed a few issues with icon placement and grid snapping, and it has added Windows-style "show in groups" mode, which I think is great. It also now has Move Here which is basically Cut and Paste.

What more can we want? What more does the Windows Explorer do?

Oh they can easily, but nobody needs to, because Finder is most of the time faster than bash for doing simple stuff. I use bash only if there's a repeated process like renaming 150 files. Btw, one can use Automator for that as well, almost just as fast as getting it done in Bash.

But for copying one file to another folder, I bet I can actually do it using Finder faster than I can do it on bash. Clicking folders is faster than typing their name. But not everyone manages in Finder as fast as some people do. I know many people including some friends who are almost half as slow as me when it comes to click-navigating. Maybe it's the result of playing shooters for 15 years.

Also, finder has some easy to go tools like command+shift+g, and that's not really any different than typing the same in bash, so why go to bash when you can do the exact same in finder for navigation?

Bash has it's uses certainly. Sometimes I want to empty the trash and Finder says "this file is being used", even the file isn't being used. Then I just sudo rm. Or when I'm copying 1.5 terabytes of files from one disk to another, and I don't trust Finder to stay without crashing for that long, I use cp etc. But bash doesn't replace every task Finder does, Finder can do some of them better and bash does others better.

ps. Hello from Auckland.

Sweet

GUIs are far from "simple and intuitive". Let's take one easy example : Using 1 Finder window to move files. Did you manage to figure this out on your own ? Of course not, I had to explain it to you not 2 minutes ago. If it was intuitive, you wouldn't have needed me to explain it.

That's not what intuitive means. There can be tons of intuitive things in Finder one doesn't know about because one has never used them. They would be counter-intuitive when one has used them but somehow they don't feel "right".

Does anyone have issues with the displaying of images? They show up blank in Preview, QuickLook, Photoshop or any app.

I use the Finder all day and really have very few complaints. Spotlight, Spring-Loaded Folders, Smart Folders and Quicklook are useful, as are the plethora of keyboard shortcuts for just about everything.

The only problem I have with Finder is stability, it does crash quite frequently on my Mac Pro, and I think it's because I have 9 External HD's connected through eSata PCI-E cards which have bad drivers or something. On my MBP with a single drive, it doesn't really crash.
