Updated a few hours ago and so far, everything's been fine for me. It's a bit snappier and the new widgets are cool.

I'm also experiencing the QT crash after closing a .wmv file, but I figure that will be fixed soon. It's not really much of a problem to me.

Hey all you guys complaining about the OS update when everyone's computer do not have a healthy system or have old or incompatible driver or some odd conflicting software installed on your computer.

Format your hard drive then install a fresh healthy OS and see if the problem exists. I bet 9 out of 10 people will have no complains.

I am not defending Apple. I'm just tired of hearing people blame the hardware or the software when it's the user that caused the problem.

My iBook update went fine and it seems to be running great. It started ip a bit snappier on the second start.

My iMac update is a little different. I did the update and everything just fine but when i went to restart it would not...well it did sort of. I let it sit for about 15 min and never did come back to the login screen. had to do a hard shutdown and restart. After that everthing worked fine. It screwed up some of my shapeshifter stuff and the front row hack i had install. But i never really used the front row hack anyway. besides if i really wanted to i could probably reinstall it...but i am to lazy to try.

All in all, fine update and nothing to dangerous here

I've got a 120Mb download

Are there any issues with jumping straight from 10.4.2 to 10.4.4 - I didn't bother doing the 10.4.3 update since there was so much bad press about it. I'm running a 1.5 GHz G4 15" PowerBook (ooh, a "Classic" mac ;)) - the previous generation to the one with the dodgy screen.

Also, what differences are there between iTunes 5.0.1 and 6.0.2, apart from video support? Any major interface changes? Any nasty bugs?

Thanks :)

Not so smooth yet.

Just installed and it locked up my primary account. It took 68+ revolutions before starting up, I only counted because it was taking so fricking long I probably missed about 30. I can get into another account and now it wants me to install quicktime 7.0.4. I hope that fixes the problem in the other account. I new better than to install it because I have to defend a dissertation in about 48 hours using this computer. Please please don't let me down.

Update: Back into my account but the fans are screaming. Another restart, sweet.

Update: Now its working except my computer is acting like it is on methamphetamines. Since I'm still in the spirit of complaining, Why was 10.4.3 so fricking slow? Damnit spoke too soon, stupid fans. I'd be sweating too. I just ran it through XBench and scored a 21.63 for a 1.2 ibook. Smoking!

Rule of thumb,

Always do multiple restarts after installing an Apple OS update. I usually do so in the following pattern after clicking restart in Software Update:

1. Let it boot to login screen then restart.
2. Let it boot again to the login screen then restart (the boot time now should be the regular one, not the extended 'i've just installed an os update' one)
3. This time log-in. Let the machine settle and load everything without opening anything. Then reboot.
4. Run Disk utility & macjanitor - then reboot.

Now from this you can deduce that either I am paranoid about rebooting my macs - or that I love the mac 'gong' :D

---

Updated 15" 1.5ghz Rev. B powerbook, Powermac G4 & 12" powerbook - all smoothly all with no problems. Granted perhaps because of my multiple reboots I did not encounter any problems with bluetooth or airport or anything of that nature...

Has anyone noticed any improvements on their battery life from the 15" battery update? While watching the keynote it said I'd get 0:29, which I pretty much got. At least the damn thing was accurate. Of course it tells me that it'll take 0:37 to charge  How can the battery on a two year old machine be so poor after so short a time? I mean it takes longer to charge than to discharge? WTF!?

I'm attempting to "calibrate" again according to the manual, which I've often done to no avail. Maybe this time I'll get lucky

I usually only restart once after a Software Update. After repairing permissions, of course.

VPN not working with 10.4.4

I've just updated a PB 15" rev D (G4) from 10.4.3 to 10.4.4 . At work I use Tunnelblick to interface with OpenVPN; never experienced any problems till this morning after the update. Any ideas on where to start looking?

BTW, it doesn't work on either Tunnelblick 2.0.1 or 3.0

EDIT: Strange, but a second reboot seems to have fixed it.....

I just downloaded this and now my bluetooth says "not available".

This happened to me in 10.4.3 following a kernel panic due to bad ram.

Sorry this is slightly opff topic - just wanted to let u know that you are not alone

I downloaded 10.4.4 tonight and everything's fine!

How many of us tried to download during the keynote when he announced it was coming out? *me*

Yep, I was following the MacRumors live feed and as soon as it said that 10.4.4 was out, I opened Software Update.

Seems to be working fine on my iBook.

I don't understand the people that restart multiple times, or who repair permissions. It isn't Mac OS 9!

Install, Restart, Done!

Update went well on:

iMac G5 2GHz
Powerbook G4 1.33GHz
Mac Mini G4 1.25GHz
Powermac G5 Dual 2GHz (rev. A)

All took a while to restart though... especially the Mac Mini.

OK - so first thing to do - start iTunes, Edit, Hide Mini-Store.

Wow is that irritating.

Otherwise, install went fine on my PB 1.67GHz. The only thing I noticed is that the battery meter is actually reporting the proper time remaining again.

I see no difference to 10.4.3 on a revA G5DP2.0. Will run the update on my other Macs in the next couple of days; G4DP 550 and iBook 800 Combo. Can't wait to play with that new MacBook - if the hype is even close to reality, the 1.83 w/ a 7200 rpm drive should come close to or better the performance of my G5.

edit - gaaaak who thought that ugly mini store was a good idea?? Glad there's a menu item to hide it.

to people asking what the difference is between the new and previous versions of iTunes - i think the only, or main difference, is the iTunes "mini-store" at the bottom of the iTunes window.

What is it with Manchester, EyeTV and Japanese BBC4 programmes?
