Oh, thank you--this finally fixes the remote CS3 remote file saving issue (or more potential disaster) that had kept me away from 10.5.3. First time I've ever not installed an update on my home machines, but I did exactly that almost every day.

There're not many software issues with updates, but it does occasionally happen. You just wait a few days. No big deal. Certainly not a reason to not consider using a Mac.

ah i c, I guess being new to mac, and apple I didn't know there were that many software issues when updates come out. Makes me a little nervous to buy my first mac. I'm still in the no-funds stage of my life, but hopefully in the next few years I'll get my first MacBook. Just trying to learn as much as I can about them.

Now now... I never said "many issues." I'm talking about professionals who can get tripped up by a very SMALL issue.

For example, a photographer is dependant on software that color calibrates his monitor with his printer so that he gets the same color on screen and in print. If an OS update were to break that, he'd be in BIG trouble until that software was also updated.

Is that going to affect 99.9% of Mac users? No. Is it "many issues?" Not at all. But still, that photographer better be careful to make sure it doesn't happen.

If you're just using it as a personal computer, these issues aren't that big of a deal. Maybe some part of a program stops working the way you expect and you have to wait a week for the fix. Not a big deal. But a business without a computer IS a big deal.

It's not that there are a lot of problems, it's just that small problems matter more for some people than for others. I have 2 Mac at home. One is for home stuff and I update it the day these things come out. The other is for work and I am much slower to update it.

If I really thought there was a problem I wouldn't update the home computer. But I do anyway, because I'm not expecting a problem...I'm just being more careful with the item that brings money into my house.

why wouldn't you update your mac?
Well, if the update (10.5.3) causes Photoshop to corrupt files when saved directly to a network volume, and your everyday use of the computer includes saving files from Photoshop directly to a network volume, that's a pretty darned good reason. That's why I'd stayed away from 10.5.3, anyway, which is a rarity for me.

Fortunately 10.5.4 fixes that, at least according to the release notes (I assume that's what "Resolves an issue with saving and reopening Adobe Creative Suite 3 files on a remote server." means).

Actually, with an OS update on a Monday, some sort of hardware update tomorrow isn't outside of the realm of possibility.

And the Mac Mini is certainly due.

Or, more likely, MobileMe is officially launching tomorrow.

(It's a Tuesday AND the beginning of the month. All sorts of goodness could theoretically happen tomorrow).

Anyone up for searching for new machine types in the patch?

Anyone else thinks that this update is running any slower on their systems? Be prepared for seemingly system freezes... be patient and the system will go on ... I prefer E12 to E17.

Um, is it just me or has the update completely messed up iCal???
I don't have an icon anymore and ALL colours are gone from the various calendars I had.

Why Apple, why? How could you do this to me?

But seriously I do need this fixed. I rely on iCal more than I rely on Safari.

Qft

Anyone who relies on their Mac to run their business would be stupid to update quickly. Some updates break software or hardware compatibitility.

You then have to wait for those vendors to update their products which may take some weeks to complete. So it makes sense to wait a few weeks and see if there are any reported problems on the internet before updating.

Seeing as how .3 only came out a few weeks ago I'm sure there are lots of people who haven't upgraded to it yet. Usually there's more than a month between these things. This one just happened to come quickly.

I'm going to keep a link to this post just in case there's another of those interesting discussions about how hackintoshes and psystar machines cannot be expected to be as reliable as true :apple: hardware..

  • Resolves an issue that prevents deleting an iCal event without notifying the creator

Could this mean what i think it means? Will I finally be able to use iCal again without annoying everybody in the company?

(I have used iCal Reply Checker, and it has been nice, but at least once, it has let some notifications slip through to large groups of people... annoying)

That's true for me, too. A coworker updated his MBP before I could spread the word about the 10.5.3 issue and he/we learned the hard way - my work imac has skipped .3. At home my wife's PowerBook is updated to 10.5.3, but not my PowerMac, because I couldn't risk losing a production machine.

But even though .4 lists fixes... I'm not updating until I hear good reports from other designers.

One of those people who think they're being oh so much smarter and more cunning than the rest of us by not updating because as we all know every Apple update leads to armageddon and total meltdown. Let them live with their delusions.

maybe, but every apple's patch has always been so big, if somebody has a slow connection, he or she might just let it pass for no much thinking.

I am running 10.5.1 at home :)

Several times in recent years Apple has released a Quicktime or Final Cut update that breaks compatibility with either Kona or Blackmagic hardware (very popular video cards) and those companies advise their customers not to upgrade until they write new drivers.

If a post-production house loses their computers for a day they stand to lose several hundred thousand dollars at a minimum. That's hardly a "delusion."

True Apple Hardware = Wait 2-3 weeks before updating
Hackintoshes = Will never work 100% correctly

So, uh...what's your point?

Um yeah so why is there no reference to MobileMe in this update, required for MobileMe?

Will it automatically turn on at some point? Or will we require 10.5.5 for the updates systemwide

No issues on Penryn BlackBook. Never had any problems with 10.5.3 either.

Haven't seen any references to MobileMe in the .prefpane file. Maybe there'll be another update to enable it.

im from UK and on my mac there be no update, any ideas??? ive tried it a few times and theres nothing?

Another one coming soon

I'm new to the Mac OS (got my first mac last year) but does Apple release so many updates normally? I mean Leopard hasn't been out a full year and there are already 4 updates, with another one coming on the 11th. Everything on preferences is still .mac and still with 10gb of storage, so they have to come out with another update, making it 5.
