EDIT: Also, don't blame Apple for this. Bad updates happen all the time. A big update on the PS3 completely screwed up some people's PS3's ....

Stop it.

Please. Just stop it.

For all of our sake.

This is why people equate Mac users to Scientologists.

This is why market share is dropping and people see it as a niche' cult of people who apply no reason or logic.

Of course you blame Apple for it just as you should blame Sony for the PS3 problems and you blame Microsoft for Vista.

If Apple releases a "bad update" to a closed-source OS that Apple develops, then it is Apple's fault, all Apple's fault, and nobody but Apple's fault.

While going off topic for a second... that PS3 update that bricked a lot of PS3's was due to people running themes before and during a system update and due to some changes in the theme code something went badly pear shaped with it causing it to brick.

The only way to not brick your system during that time of the update was to run the default wavy theme. I remember reading this, the people that said they were running themes were the ones it happened to.

Later on in months ahead Sony made a utility for such a thing to happen to bring up some secret menu so you're not stuck with a defunct console. So you can factory restore it whatever was the fail safe mode to get it back to life.

Apple Releases Mac OS X 10.5.7 and Safari Updates resumes.

If you follow this procedure, as I have from the very beginning, you'll avoid being an unpaid beta-tester for Apple. With the accompanying disastrous consequences.

I have a better procedure.

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it".

10.5.6 routinely has 30 days of uptime, and this is on a MacBook Pro on which I let the battery expire once a month to condition.

Not counting battery exhaustion, it has been up about 120 days without a needed reboot or crash.

Seriously, what do you want out of an OS? That's about as good as it gets.

When everything works, the risk/reward to an update fall solely on "risk".

Maybe a web page will load .01 seconds faster. That's the best case scenario.

What's the worst?

A paperweight? Loss of a major function? Instability?

If your machine was working fine, and you updated ... then you updated simply to update.

If it's a toy, fine.

If it's a production or needed machine, I don't get it.

Unless an update fixes a speccific problem that is bothering me, or dramatically increases performance, I don't bother to apply it. At least not for a few months after it has been out.

I feel that this is also a good policy.

Don't trade something that works great for something of unknown quality.

Silky is the new snappy? :D

I'm going to download and test later. I'm just wondering if anyone knows if this fixes the problem with MS Word and Spaces? I've actually stopped using Word because of it.

Silky as very smooth, the system just responds more smoothly than before, like if it was multitasking better. Also apps seem to take a little less time to start. Silky as in Silky Smooth. I do not believe it is the re-start since I restart at least twice a month and this is the best my laptop has run since I purchased it 5 months ago. Runs less hot also and is very quiet. Unibody MBP 15.

Mine wasn't updated either but I must say my macbook pro is running snappier than before. No one seems to know why it doesn't show up for some.

Do you have a Unibody Macbook Pro? It seems as if the Unibody Macbook Pros don't get the power profiles in the menu bar. My guess.. it's the two graphics cards and there's something that prevents power management.. just a guess.

Yes, I have a Unibody MacBook Pro (late 2008). You might be right.

At this point, I don't want to go through the trouble of reinstalling the new update....

So this morning, I quit the Mail app and restarted it to see what would happen. Again, the Mail app is acting as if it is brand new, with no registered email accounts. WTH is going on?:confused:

OH NOOOOOO!!!!!!! I re-added my accounts, quit Mail, and then restarted, all the accounts were gone again. This is really annoying!!!!!!!

...
P.S. I'm not even running Spotlight via Spotless, so in that way I'm still on Panther, even though I'm on 10.4.11. My hard drives thank me.

Sad.

I've been an early adopter since Panther through to now - all updates neigh flawless, no real probs.

I enjoy using all the new features, some of which I can't image not having any more.;)

Guess if you're happy kicking around in the Dark Ages...

I don't understand how people can say that when a new Mac OS is released, we're beta testers. I don't know how people are having as many problems as some of you have, but I have yet to run into a major problem in the OS. Even when Leopard was at 10.5.0, I was running smoothly and everyone else was freaking out. Before anyone says that I don't use my computer enough... I'm a photographer and I use Photoshop heavily. I also record and produce music in Logic. I've also got a 30+GB iTunes collection that I use quite a bit for my various iPods and iPhones. I also have Aperture and that seems stable too. Other things I do are stuff like iChat, Mail and Safari. I also play Call of Duty 4 a lot lately. I'm on my computer quite a bit and I don't have nearly as many problems as you all make it out to be.

Oh, and by the way. I keep my Machine healthy by always applying updates and choosing carefully what I install for third party utilities and drivers. I hardly install Safari plugins or QuickTime plugins. I think for QuickTime, I only have Perian. Just in case anyone's wondering how I have such a smooth running Mac.

Flawless update...expect that every few minutes my airport connections drop for a minute or so, and then reconnects itself. Never did that before the update...I know this is a known issue but are there any solid solutions??

Situation my mac seem to have shortage.

I have a situation where my mac os x, at time the screen has color line,
and nothing is visible it seem to have a shortgage, is something last for liked
20 min, most of time it go away after turning off,and on. is this problem fixable.

Sounds like a monitor issue. Susan, what is your mac? And what version of OSX? This one? An appropriate post in the right section would help...

If Apple releases a "bad update" to a closed-source OS that Apple develops, then it is Apple's fault, all Apple's fault, and nobody but Apple's fault.

It's not though. They can't test it on thousands/millions of Macs can they? Of course it would react differently to every Mac out there, so there is no telling what an update might do.

After 3 hours of long battle, I think I finally figured out what went wrong with my Mail.app. It was the old HTTPMail plug-in I forgot to delete. After completely removing that plug-in, my Mail app is back to work (i.e. I added my Gmail accounts back and it stayed after quitting and restarting the application), only that the previous messages disappeared (which isn't that a big problem for me). Hope this will help those who had similar problem with me. :)

Almost stressed out, but now I can enjoy 10.5.7. Happy updating, folks!

The latest Safari 4 beta seems far more memory-efficient than the last one. Very happy with all the updates so far.

Updated my Mac Pro using SU and all seems fine apart from there are no oldest/latest backup dates displayed in the Time Machine preferences pane, also no latest backup date is displayed in the Time Machine menu bar. Backups are still working, just no dates.

I went Mac back in Panther. Started reading the Apple forums right away. Panther was brand new.

Since Panther, and Tiger, and now Leopard, it seems Apple has followed a horrific predictable pattern.

In a nutshell, it's this: The first 3-4 releases of any OS are bugridden and unreliable, and give early adopters fits.

Round about the middle releases, X.X.5 to X.X.6, they get stable. Finally.

Then the following releases are all nightmares, UNTIL THE VERY FINAL RELEASE, which usually comes extremely close to the release of the new OS.

Now, whether you want to blame this on Apple rushing in all sorts of hooks for the new OS in the old OS, or absolute malfeasance (screwing up the later releases on purpose to make more people buy the new untried unreliable versions when they first hit the market) the conclusions are the same:

1. STAY AWAY FROM ANY NEW OS RELEASE until midterm. This is an absolute must.

2. STAY AWAY FROM ANY NEW OS UPDATE until the very final version is released. Ignore everything after the stable midterm release until the final version is released.

3. Then STAY ON THIS VERSION until the new version is at midterm.

If you follow this procedure, as I have from the very beginning, you'll avoid being an unpaid beta-tester for Apple. With the accompanying disastrous consequences.

As for me personally, I'm still not even remotely interested in Leopard, yet. In fact, I probably won't bite the bullet on it until Snow Leopard is released and I can be assured they've gotten out all the bugs out of Leopard and the pre-Snow Leopard disaster releases (like THIS one) are finished.

This strategy also makes sure that all 3rd party drivers have been caught up as well.

For what it's worth.

:apple:

P.S. I'm not even running Spotlight via Spotless, so in that way I'm still on Panther, even though I'm on 10.4.11. My hard drives thank me.

I'm not sure I follow this so called predictable pattern...I've yet to encounter an updating issue and Leopard has been quite reliable imo.
