WiFI problems still not fixed

It looks like those that have been having problems with WiFi connectivity issues since they upgraded to SL (there are around 58 pages of problems on the apple discussion forum) are still experiencing them under 10.6.3 despite the claims in the update documentation that they have been fixed.

See the last few page of this link http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2142725&start=840&tstart=150

Apple has certainly dropped the ball on this one big time especially when you consider that WiFi for many of these people work perfectly before the SL upgrade and that the WiFi in Windows under Bootcamp works continued to work flawlessly before and after the SL upgrade. Very poor effort Apple.

Interested to hear specifically from anyone that has had their WiFi issues fixed with this update particularly the intermittent dropping out issue.

Does this issue also encompass how older machines can't create wireless networks under SL?

No WiFi issues here on my Macbook or iMac, both connected to an AirPort at 802.11n (5GHz) and upgraded to 10.6.3.

I appreciate that many have not had any WiFi problems upgrading to SL and if you fall into that category consider yourself very fortunate.

Does this issue also encompass how older machines can't create wireless networks under SL?

The issue has affected both people like myself with old machines (late 2006 C2D MacBookPro) and well as new machines delivered relatively recently (I saw a post from several people with Macs purchased in December 2009 and January 2010). So it appears that the problem isn't just related to older hardware or networking hardware or upgrading from a particular software environment.

Something associated with the way WiFi is implemented in SL has seriously undermined its stability compared to the way it was done in previous versions of the OS because lots of previously reliable WiFI connection are now rendered unreliable. The very frustrating and disappointing thing for many long time devoted Mac fans is the complete lack of acknowledgment from Apple about the problem.

Less CPU demand from a GPU rework..

About time, although everything works for me already with 10.6.2.

You'll find the your graphics are snappier and if you're using a MacBook, you CPU temps will drop (not sure about battery life, might me an improvement with less CPU demand?)....

xBench OPen GL on my machine goes a 100% gain on data throughput, fewer CPU cycles me-thinks!

Big improvement.

Before updating to 10.6.3, I made sure I updated Onyx and ran all the cleanup and maintenance stuff. Rebooted my machine and it solved a lot of issues I had with my system (running 10.6.2) and it was much snappier. I then backed-up all my data. Subsequently, installed the 10.6.3 update and ran disk permission repair after that. All I can say is, my machine is perfect, no issues whatsoever. It runs very fast - I have the 2.0GHz Aluminium MacBook.

My advice to you is to do the above and you will find that most of your issues are gone.

On the same note note, a month ago, I sent my machine back to the Apple Store - I had quite a bit of issues and my machine was heating up unnecessarily. Also, performance was terrible. My machine was formatted and the genius put in a fresh copy of 10.6. Did all the updates, repaired disk permission and I only copied my files from my Time Machine backup (dont copy other settings or applications) and I must say I had zero problems after that. If you are having any issues, try to do a clean install. Most probably will solve all your problems. Couldnt be happier with my machine and also with SL at the moment. Also, do a SMC reset and a PRAM reset.

I worked with someone (in my MUG) who had nothing but issues (live and in person at their home) and was able to easily fix their problem. They did not have the correct time in the Linksys router or the correct time zone in their Mac Book pro. upon correcting this the person reported complete success.

So all these supposed problem people really don't understand about simple networking or simple computer knowledge but they did know how to complain.

Maybe another eighth of the complainers are having hardware issues in either the Mac or their old ass wireless router. In forums I always ask that these people go to a free third party Access point around them and see if they can get on it or at least see the signal.

Lastly have any of these wireless people gone through simple trouble shooting processes like in the article Tutorial: Fixing Wireless connectivity (including AirPort) problems: Dropouts, slow speed, more and deleting preference files and rebooting their wireless router.

I had wi-fi problems when upgrading to SL which were fixed by updating my routers firmware (i'd never done it since getting the router), i never had problems on Leopard.

Many that are able to have fixed the problems by downgrading back to their previous OS, generally Leopard, so the issue is one introduced in SL for some people. Sounds like you are one of the fortunate ones without the problem.

Granted there may be some that are ignorant users but there are also people like myself that have extensive hardware and software engineering backgrounds in the computer industry that have experienced these issues, so generalizations about people who report problems as being simple minded is quite narrow minded.

Downgrading to the previous OS always sems to fix the problem. Additionally, other Mac and Windows machines on the same network continue to work fine, including some SL machines but not the few SL machine that manifest the problem, some of which are relatively new machines.

I know of many people, in fact most that have had to put up with the issues and taken the trouble to post on the net, have tried most of the suggested solution on the net like the one you have suggested. Certainly, I have. And yes it has occasionally fixed the issue - for some on a permanent basis, for others on a temporary basis that reverts after a while and for quite a few others it has not had any effect.

It is an introduced problem with Snow Leopard in term of the robustness of the WiFI implementation. Remember it wasn't an issue for many in pre SL versions of the OS. It has been an elusive issue which is probably why Apple has not been able to nail it yet but that does not mean it is not a real problem. At least after 6+ months there was some reference to WiFi / network issues in the 10.6.3 detailed release notes - it is just that it didn't resolve the issues it was supposed to fix.

Fixed!

Stiill at the same CPU usage. According to Activity Monitor, the culprit is "comapcpowerchute", the software for my APC UPS. Anyone else have this?

The fix for this problem is to uninstall the APC Power Chute software and use the Energy Saver preference in System Preferences. Choose UPS and under Shutdown Options select #1.
APC is supposed to be working on new software that is compatible with Snow Leopard.
I'm just glad my CPU usage is back to 6%.

I've just noticed when i wake from sleep the wifi connects almost instantly as it took 5+ seconds before.

m$ integration

All of the file copy to windows shares works perfectly now. That was a major headache, being the IT department's Mac guy... hopefully the rest of the AD integration stuff smooths out a bit as well.

Wi Fi

I had wi-fi problems when upgrading to SL which were fixed by updating my routers firmware (i'd never done it since getting the router), i never had problems on Leopard.

The problem may well not be OSX but rather the router, and specifically cross interference with other rf sources. Try switching the channel on the router...

Is this company still capable of running their own computers ?

Update keeps freezing the cursor/mouse on various computers, mine too.
The problem is already going up and down the discussions.

MacBookPro 2.5 Ghz, 4GB 667 Mhz

Just can't get this damn update installed on my uMB.
