I got the gray screen of death today with the restart text... I've only had this happen one other time and that was due to me using the hacked NTFS write thing in 10.6.

I don't use that anymore, and I got the screen again today.

No new software, recently updated OSX to 10.6.3 from 10.6.2, then the iTunes update and the iPhoto update.

All legitimate software installed... No illegally downloaded stuff. No porn. Nothing that would cause any viruses or anything to install.

Anyone else with the problem?

*sigh* People just don't understand.

The people that want to boot full 64bit mode all the time would as well use the blower on their V8 everywhere they went.

Also, did some investigating...

Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):
com.apple.filesystems.ntfs(3.2)@0x13f6000->0x1455fff

Looks like it was the NTFS stuff again... even though I haven't changed anything with it. I don't have NTFS 3G installed, I don't have the hack installed. Again, nothing that I have done to provoke it. In fact, I haven't even browsed my Windows 7 partition from OSX in weeks.

One bug that used to drive me nuts seems to be fixed. When ever I would VPN into a work computer using cisco vpn, all of my external connects would disconnect. However as soon as I would disconnect from the VPN they would reconnect. Well under the 10.6.1 and 10.6.2 they wouldn't reconnect. Well I just tested it and they reconnected!!! Yeah!!!

Yeah, that's very nice functionality.

Rude? Are you reading my post and not just imagining stuff again?

I read your post. If you were replying to my post, then, yes, you were being rude because you were assuming that my problem exists because I'm running the kernel in 64bit mode. I am not running it in 64bit mode.

Please just use
when replying to people. It's much easier to understand what you mean.

Okay? ;)

Well, ryannazaretian, since you say please, I'll consider it. The chances look slim, though :(

Competing with my Desi Arnaz resemblance seems like a fruitless venture at this particular moment in time.

Laughing in my moment of anguish?! >8\ Ye shall not be laughing when the coming of hamster Christ raises all those hamsters laid to rest to raze the earth! I'm not sure if that means all hamsters in their most recent form, or if it goes back as far as the bear-like ancestors, Geesus Gerbil was never too clear on that.

Also, I haz NO hacks, the closest I can come are the apps listed below.

Kockgunner, what apps/plugins do you have so we can see what, perhaps, we have in common other than being screwed.

Smart Sleep, iStat Menus, Perian, Caffeine, and the plugin for Soundflower are the only things I could imagine having done something deep within the system.

Sorry for replying late. I really want to solve this problem. I have Smart Sleep, iStat Menus, SRS iWow plugin for iTunes, and Flip4Mac WMV.

Hm...now that I've toyed with it, I've realized that Spaces is likely not utilizing Quartz Extreme!

I have a feeling somebody broke something. I'm on the 9400m, you?

I'm still using the machine in my sig. Penryn MBP with an 8600M GT 256 MB RAM so it shouldn't be like this unless my GPU is dying :O

Less “beach balls” with 10.6.3

I've been getting less “beach balls” with 10.6.3 than with 10.6.2 definitely. Which is a very good thing.

So far … everything seems OK

27" iMac Core2Duo, 3.06 GHz, 4 GB of RAM

System always upgraded respectively completely migrated using Migration Assistant (migrating EVERYTHING!) three or four times since, uhm, 2004 or so, even though the pundits often warn and recommend clean install. Never had problems, though. Seems I'm doing something right ;-)

All my needed stuff seems to run OK so far: Safari, Eudora, Vienna, Tweetdeck. Also my productive stuff, Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, all CS3, seem to run OK after some superficial testing.

My background-y stuff: Butler, BuddyPop, even Unsanity's new beta versions of their Haxies’s have given me no problems yet. Amazing.

Greetings, Tom

That's probably because they improved Finder by a great deal. I haven't notice any beachballs at all lately. It doesn't get stuck when opening the file open/save dialogs anymore (happens cuz of the external drives).

What do you console logs say just before the KP?

When you stopped using NTFS, did you uninstall it?

Have you run Rember? Disk Utility?

You might also want to run System Profiler to see what might remain from a previous installation.

COD4 runs exactly the same on my MacBook Pro. I compared it with my brother's using 10.6.2. Same performance on both.
