Aperture under 10.6.5

I expected nothing from this update, but amazingly, Aperture now runs beautifully. Prior to 10.6.5 it was almost impossible to use. Haven't had a chance to test anything else.

Does this answer your question?

can you verify if any of these .kexts are working or not

1) AppleIntelPIIXATA.kext 2.5.1 x86_64 280K /Extra
2) IOAHCIBlockStorageInjector.kext 1.1.1 N/A 4K /Extra
3) JMicronATA.kext 1.0.0 x86_64 180K /Extra

Audio
(No files present to install)

Graphics
4) ATY_Init.kext 1.0.0d1 i386 488K /Extra

Networking
(No files present to install)

Misc Patches
5) fakesmc.kext 2 x86_64 124K /Extra
6) NullCPUPowerManagement.kext 1.0.0d2 x86_64 116K /Extra
7) OpenHaltRestart.kext 2.1.0 x86_64 100K /Extra
8) PlatformUUID.kext 1.0.0 x86_64 104K /Extra

The only issue, if you can call it an issue, was the audio kext after the update. The kext for my specific audio chip worked just fine, I just had to roll back to the 10.6.2 AppleHDA to enable it in 10.6.5.

I hope this helps:

I read this carefully before attempting the update: TonyMacx86 Blog

I have the Gigabyte X58A-UD3R mb with an i7 950 3GHz, 8GB of DDR3 1600Mhz, Sapphire 5870 1GB, and the OSX drive isn't even connected to the first (SATA 0) port.

just downloaded MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.5.pkg that was posted earlier in this thread (it's smaller than 10.6.4.dmg combo updater), and after running it and rebooting, I'm still on 10.6.4? what's going on? lol

Carefull with the pkg with 10.6.4 the guy posted.

I tryied using that file and after appliying it it says 10.6.4 and now System Updater crashes every time I try to apply a patch

It seems to be a fake updater probably just had a name change and is really only the 10.6.4 combo updater. I got the same thankfully I tried via my external drive that I use to test things with.

You're not on 10.6.4 so you need it. I don't think there's a way for people on 10.6.4 to get it to show up in Software Update (shame you can't do that or even make it a preference), has to be downloaded manually.

thanks for the clarification. on another note, anyone have any success flashing an ATI HD Radeon 4870 1GB card for 10.6.4 or 10.6.5? I would LOVE to update to this new version, but I use my Mac Pro as my primary work machine and my primary gaming machine, so I can't risk losing graphics performance or dual display, as both are critical to me. =\

10.1 beta 2, 10.6.5 os, 4.2 gm seed iphone 4 = NO airprint :(

i have two wireless networks - printer is on one wifi, im on another, but they are linked together via my time capsule (which creates the 2nd network) - printing from mac works fine. but airprint is unsuccessful.

tried connecting iphone and mac to the same wifi the printer is on - still no printer found on iphone. :(

Have you enabled printer sharing on the Mac? Air Printing can't print directly to a network printer unless it is connected to and/or shared by a Mac or PC. The only exception to this are a few recently released HP printers.

Is this new in SL? I have always had Software Update offer me the update even if I am on an older rev, but instead of the standard update it downloads the combo update instead. Has this changed? Even if you are on 10.6.1 it should offer the update if a combo is available.

Combo updates are only needed if you are a few updates behind and you want to catch up. A delta will work fine 99.99% of the time.

Why do a bunch of software updates when you have a bunch of Macs to update. How about downloading one combo update and installing as opposed wasting bandwidth. I don't know where you live son, but in Canada, we don't get unlimited bandwidth. Not cellular, and definitely not broadband.

I downloaded the "combo" from the link earlier and was about to install it. Good thing I refreshed and read that people are having issues. Yuck.

the combo update is showing up for me just fine, has been for awhile. i just don't want to update to it because i have a flashed video card and 10.6.4 broke my dual monitor support, so i'm still on 10.6.3.

Same size here, aprox 1 GB, coming from 10.6.3 (one of my systems running on an external drive), so i think the combo should be no smaller than that...

Cheers!

I updated due to the mention of better graphics performance, so I ran GLView before and after and it's not exactly what I was expecting.

10.6.4, ATI v1.6.18 and OpenGL v1.6.9:

2560x1440
1431, 1432, 1427, 1396, 1394, 1305, 1243

1920x1080
2167, 2171, 2154, 2104, 2102, 2096, 2013, 1912

10.6.5, ATI v1.6.24 and OpenGL v1.6.11

2560x1440
1383, 1388, 1380, 1353, 1352, 1266, 1207

1920x1080
2120, 2120, 2106, 2056, 2054, 1973, 1869

Can anyone please explain why the graphics performance has dropped? on the 1920 test, I am down roughly 40-50fps on each test. Am I missing something here?

It's most likely now synchronizing to your monitor's VSync.

Every OpenGL platform shows absurd frame rates until they synchronize to the monitor's VSync.

your awesome thank you thats just what I needed!

we have almost identical systems,

Concerning yourself with a Hackintosh?
Yep!

I have the 2nd beta of itunes 10.1 and airprint isn't working for me so I'd say being patient is getting me nowhere fast.

Wrong. I have 10.6.5 Build 10H574 and iTunes 10.1b10 on my mac and iOS 4.2 GM and Airprint is working fine.

Being patient means waiting for the 4.2 release of iOS before considering it not working.

hm it looks like that wasn't an actual 10.6.5. guess i'll try 10.6.5 from software updates instead. it's not listed as a combo package, and is around 517mb in size.

Damn. Airprint refuses to work for me. my iphone can't find a printer yet it's setup to be shared on 10.6.5.

You need iOS 4.2 on your phone before it will work, regardless of what you have on your Mac.

I have 10.6.5 Build 10H574 with iTunes 10.1b10 and iOS 4.2 GM on my phone and iPad and it's working fine.

Have you enabled printer sharing on the Mac? Air Printing can't print directly to a network printer unless it is connected to and/or shared by a Mac or PC. The only exception to this are a few recently released HP printers.

Correct. If you are trying to print directly to your wireless printer, it won't work unless it supports AirPrint.

Here's a nice link to direct you to some new HP printers that do.

Than wait for the OFFICIAL one from Apple. It doesn't ALWAYS come out on the same day as the Software Updater. It will be posted shortly, be patient. And don't download random links, OMG, what a Bad Bad Bad Idea.

Anyone who downloaded a combo from an unofficial link is a certified moron and deserve everything they got.

Wow, aren't you nice. I didn't use the link, as I had my suspicions. Still, don't kick them when they are down.

To be fair, I don't think the guy who posted the link did it in bad faith. It is probably for a specific configuration, which is why for some people it works and for others doesn't. I guess he didn't know.

Waiting for the combo here. I've been having some issues and I'm hoping it will correct them.

AirPrint works for me as well. I was on 10.6.5 10H568 before updating through Software Update (a bit irritating that the official 10.6.5 update even showed up) and had my shared printer (Brother 7010L) setup for AirPrint even before. I also have iTunes 10.1b2 installed and the iPad's on 4.2 GM. *If* they removed the function, it might be that those who had access to earlier 10.6.5 builds might have some relics on their systems... On the other hand, maybe it really depends on the printer model and on the way it's shared... Dunno... Maybe try removing and adding the printer again from scratch and sharing it anew does the trick for those where it currently doesn't work?

iTunes has nothing to do with AirPrint.

You need to have 10.6.5 Build 10H574 and share your printer via your Mac. You can not print directly to a wifi connected printer unless it supports AirPrint (and few do).

Also, make sure you have "printer sharing" enabled under "sharing" under System Preferences.

I hope that's the case. It did come from apple.com after all, and it was signed by Apple. If that's what happened, would the real combo update correct the issues, or is it time for a Time Machine rollback?
