Don't get me wrong i think MAS is great an all but one thing i'm not liking is having to re-purchase games i've already purchased for iOS eg. Angry Birds. Basicly i've already purchased this game on my iPhone and now i have to purchase it again to play it on my MPB meaning both Apple and Rovio have received two lots of payment for the same game (no extra content etc.) under the same account. Doesn't seem right :(

The grand daddy of digital distribution Steam allows me to purchase a game once on my PC then install it to My MBP and or any other computer I want to run it on because the game is tied to my account and not device.

Surely you should only have to buy a game once under your account.

Yeah, it would be nice to at least have the option for "Truly Universal Apps", that work with the iPhone/iPod, iPad and Mac. One can dream... :)

One other thing: Anyone who thinks the Mac App Store is going to become a solution for piracy is naive.

I didn't say it was a solution so much as a step in the right direction.

Why do people pirate software?

- because they don't want to pay for it (for a variety of reasons)
- because they want to install it in more places than they have licenses for.

I've noticed a general trend in the last 10 years or so that software licenses are more and more opening up to letting you install the software on more than one computer (e.g. Microsoft Office). The App Store builds that policy right into itself. Plus it seems to be encouraging lower priced software for a variety of reasons (lower actual distribution costs, more competition, desire for mindshare, etc.)

Doesn't that pretty much take care of the reasons that most people will pirate software?

I know there will always be people who absolutely insist on pirating software. Those who have zero money, those who do so for idealogical reasons, etc. Nothing changes for those people. And yes, I'm sure the App Store will get hacked, so it's not a foolproof solution.

Beware buying 3rd party app if you qualify for discount

If you already own an App and qualify for a discount to upgrade DO NOT use APP store at this time as it does not ask or offer any way to take advantage of such upgrade offers. You will be billed full price immediately. Use the software company's own web site.

Apple need to add the ability to take advantage of upgrade offers on the App store although I can see this is tricky requiring verification of serials etc.

At the very least a warning that you can only buy at full price on the app store and that no upgrade prices can be dealt with should be prominently displayed.

And British prices have to include VAT, which means the UK cost for the software itself is actually £37.49 (US$58.06). Or even a tad lower if, like Apple.com, it is charged at Irish rates which are 1% higher.

Michael.
I've got a feeling it's different for downloads. iTunes can charge VAT at 15% as it's based in Luxembourg. If Apple have the UK Mac Store based in the Channel Islands it's possible they can get away without adding VAT at all.

(That's me speculating. I don't know where the Mac Store is based.)

The cool thing is, you can use it on any Mac that has your iTunes login info entered. So if you own 10 Mac's, you only have to buy an App once.

this is my biggest concern, any further info/confirmation on this?

basically if i buy a program now (my mac is nearing EOL), will i still be able to use it when i get a new one?

limit to installs, etc etc.

It's the principle.
There's NOTHING fundamentally preventing access to an app store for 10.5, just they draw the line there.
As usual, you get a shiny new toy, a couple of years later it's not shiny anymore unless to open your wallet again and again.
Hope many other 10.5 users complain...

10.5 users need to get over it and move on. Go ahead and stick to your principles and you'll be left in the cold.

Good news everyone!

Free apps don't seem to have any DRM. Out of curiosity I copied my Twitter.app bundle to my work Mac, which doesn't have my personal login at all, and it ran fine without asking for any further information.

This is great; there's no reason free applications should be restricted.

Wondering if anyone can help me.

I have a C2D imac and when I run software update it doesnt say that I have anything available. I am running 10.5.8 right now. Shouldnt I be able to upgrade to 10.6 and have the mac app store??

Yeah, I'd kind of like 3 programs.

1) The iTunes App - Manages all media that aren't photos - Contains music and movie store for shopping/downloading/renting.

2) The App App - Manage your Mac apps and iOS apps. Buy them, organize them, love them.

3) The Mobile Sync App - Syncs your iPhones, iPods, and iPads. Sees and talks to iTunes, the App app, iPhoto/Aperture, Address Book, and Mail to bring stuff into your phone. Contains even more controls than iTunes does now...for example...use it to set up wireless G-Mail Exchange on your iPhone! (No more googling up instructions online and having to do it on the phone.) Or run 'Find My Phone' right inside of it instead of going to the website. Once it's out of iTunes they can make this bigger and more complicated without having to keep it bottled up in one little part of a bigger program.

I'd like to see 2/3 together, the App Store should be the central hub of the App / Content circle for all your devices. Problem is, you have millions of people using iTunes on Windows, doubt they want to start making differences now...

Someone should email el Jobso on this one...

You need to upgrade from 10.5 Leopard to 10.6 Snow Leopard. Its $20 to upgrade.

I'd wager it's related to the platform. By restricting the App Store to 10.6 then they can guarantee it's Intel hardware only.

Looking at the handful of apps I've downloaded they're all Intel Apps rather than Universal.

Interesting ... it shows me the applications from iLife and iWork as "installed". Does this work only for Apple products or is that something that every software manufacture can implement?

Well it picked up on the fact that I had Coda already installed, but other apps like Stuffit Expander did not show up as installed.

It takes care of some cases of piracy, but it'll all balance out by increasing piracy as the desire for otherwise unknown software arises.

A helluva lot of people are just born not wanting to pay for anything. Take away their toys I say! :)

uninstall

Uninstall does not seems to work. I trashed the app and it asked for Administrator password. After I provided everything is in Trash and I make sure I clear it. But even after I done that the App Store still show it is installed, which basically mean I cannot reinstall it.

- Question: Why it ask for Administrator password? I think App Store installed the app a little bit different and there should be some other way to uninstall the app.

First 2 apps downloaded no problem.

Downloading Aperture right now. I've got 3 Mac's, putting it on my MB Pro now and will try the iMac and Pro later.

Aperture is taking absolutely forever to download, been 10 minutes and not even a single mark on the bar but I suspect things are busy today.

I wish they'd take the time to overhaul the interface. Icon's and names don't tell you much, be nice if they had a fly over description.

Let's take one app as an example, Evernote.
I have Evernote installed normally. Now, should I just install it from App Store? Does that create duplicates? Or should I delete the app first?
And what about all data/settings in apps that I have already installed normally?

yes, you need Snow Leopard, i think ...

Installed apps are owned by root, so you need to be able to go to root privileges (Administrator account) to remove them.

Really happy with the new Mac app store so far. Bought Pages, Keynote, Numbers, and Aperture. Installed the new free Twitter app as well.

I deleted my installed copies of StuffIt Expander and Carbon Copy Cloner and reinstalled off the app store (thinking this will be better as far as alerting me to future updates).

So far, so good.

I think the main problem with your plan is that it would require 2 applications to open up when you plug in your iPhone/ iPod Touch. The iTunes store works because it's a "1 stop shop" for all your iOs apps. Separating the music/ movies from the apps would be too cumbersome and defy the point of integrated software and hardware.
