If they don't make all these versions of the same game into one single app across multiple devices (Mac, iPad, iPhone/iTouch, and the inevitable AppleTV), I have a feeling this will bite them in the ass in the future.

If you ask people to buy the same PSN game on the PS3 and again on the PSP and again on other Sony's devices….

For a company that is so streamlined and clean as Apple, I have to say their ways of handling Apps are pretty messy. For example, just look at all those Free Demo apps mixed with the Paid Version into one single store, with random suffixes such as "Lite", "Free", "Express", "Pro"…. This is one thing that Microsoft and Sony online stores handle (surprisingly) much more elegantly, with its demo section and paid section.

does anybody know why they decided to not integrate it into iTunes?

iTunes is already large and I suspect becoming less manageable from a source code perspective. I believe iTunes should be just tunes ----like the name says. I applaud Apple for making Mac Apps separate

And iPod/iPad/iPhone apps are in iTunes why then?

I like the idea of a single app for all this stuff. It's probably time to retire the iTunes name as music is only a slice of the growing pie.

App store keeps crashing when I try to load the updates tab. This happening for anybody else?

I am not seeing the update with Software Update. Is it because I have the beta installed for Mac App development? Do I need to downgrade it to 10.6.5?
Presumably as a developer you have the beta 10.6.6 build 10j537 installer. Use the reversioner to downgrade the release to 10.6.5 and then download the official 10.6.6 ( or use Software Update ). All will be well.

judging by the posts in this thread it doesn't seem like it, but is anyone else unable to sign in? the app store opens just fine for me, but nothing happens when i click sign in, whether it's from the main page, the "store" menu on the menu bar, or if i try to purchase an app. frustrating to say the least!

and i too applaud apple for making a separate application. itunes should be just a media player, it's already bogged down enough. soon it'll turn into what vuze is to bittorrent clients...

It would be great if they moved the iOS app store into the Mac App Store.

Why isn't the iTunes Store as smooth as the Mac App Store? I think it's about time they separate it from iTunes at least on the Mac anyway.

I'd rather see a ground-up rewrite (and renaming) of iTunes entirely, incorporating music, video, mobile apps, and Mac apps in one place. Heck, why not beat Microsoft to the punch and incorporate a Windows App Store as well? ;)

This is one of the best updates Apple has ever released. I couldn't be happier. It is working flawlessly on my iMac, already installed a couple of apps. Will be installing on my MBP later tonight, and see how it works.

THANKS :apple:! :D

I think from my first impressions the store is very good. I think it will take us users a while to get that "iPhone App Store" feeling on our computers comfortably. I installed Twitter in less than 20 seconds of opening the App Store. Now that's impressive even by today's standards! I'll be following the App Store with a series of articles for beginners - our mothers, fathers and others who have Macs but aren't quite sure what it's all about - http://macstarter.com

how to install the final over the 10.6.6 developer beta!?

Run the reversioner.pkg ( from the 10.6.6 10j537 build ) and it will make your OS version 10.6.5 ( do NOT try to reinstall the OS ). Now use Software Update ( or download the combo updater from Apple's site ) to install the official version. All will be well.

Log in, close the App Store, re-open and purchase. I did that, when I opened it and download the agreements and stuff should come out.

it doesn't let me sign in. I click the button to get to the sign in screen and nothing happens

I deleted my installed copies of StuffIt Expander and Carbon Copy Cloner and reinstalled off the app store (thinking this will be better as far as alerting me to future updates).
I dearly hope you didn't, because the "Carbon Copy" app at the App Store isn't Carbon Copy Cloner.

I'm getting "TextWrangler is damaged and can't be opened" errors when I try to run the version of TextWrangler from MAS. The direct download from BareBones is broken too.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

Downloaded and installed. Love It!

RemoteSnapServer

"RemoteSnapServer can’t be installed on this computer."

Thanks for all the information, the only requirements apparently is that I should be running 10.5, I'm running 10.6.6 so what gives?

Went to download the app from the website, and you can't, mac store only......great.

I'm running a G1 Macbook btw

glad i'm not the only one. i've restarted my mac several times and it still won't let me sign in. don't know what the issue is here...

Overall, I'm pleased with the release of the Mac App Store and the initial offerings. I hope the restrictions Apple have in place don't deter developers and the store really lives up to its potential. Right now downloading from the MAS and various websites makes it feel like I'm using a jailbroken iPhone. With that said, I still think the internet route is more appealing, especially for apps with high price tags because you get a free trial.

I understand your point and it's well taken and I do hope for a "fair" solution but do you really think it makes sense that people who have spent $.99 on iApps such as Angry Birds should get the Mac desktop version for free? I don't. But I do see the other way around. If you buy the Mac version which cost more then it should be free to play on your idevice.

I agree 90% (I don't agree with the last sentence).

Mac and iOS are different beasts. I get annoyed (but still suck it up) if I buy a iPhone app and than have to pay again for the iPad app - those run the exact same OS and require only minimal coding to run 'Universal'. But I don't see anything that would justify a 'free' version for the mac if you already have the iOS version, those things are not really compatible and developers can't even create Universal binaries that would run on both (and touch UI anyway won't work on the Mac). It is amazing how cheap people get and how they want basically everything for free. I also would assume that most people complaining about this rarely buy any application because they are too cheap for that.

Anybody else have a problem with App icons disappearing from the dock after today's update?? Randomly noticed it first in the Apps folder (all of the icons were gone, but now they're all back), and then as I started opening a few Apps (safari, iPhoto), the app would open but the icon would disappear, and remain missing even after closing the app. Rebooting the computer does nothing. One icon (Calculator) randomly came back when I opened the program, but nothing else has returned so far.
The icons are also missing from the command-tab app switcher floater window. Weird stuff!!!
