Unfrozen

using the 2011 15" 2.2ghz, updated to 10.6.7, ran "yes > /dev/null &" 12 times

Findings below,
-core temp shot up to above 90 deg
-fans spun up to 6krpm
-temp reduced to 78-85 deg

and yes I live in a hot and humid country, and it seems that the only issue i was having is solved.

Only thing I couldn't understand, why is Skype and Twitter forcing the discrete card.. hmmm

Let's hope so.

I hate to say it, but my current MacPro set up (10.6.6) is by far the most flaky I ever owned on the Mac platform (since 1993). Crashes and freezes all over the place, the 'favorite' one where the screen gradually turns black and you see in various language that your machine needs to be restarted :(

I've had issues with my iMac as well. I took it into the Apple Store a few weeks ago and they replaced both sticks of memory, the display adaptor card, and the logic board. So far no out right kernel panics, but i have had it go to a blue screen without any interface when fast user switching. I'm hoping that is fixed via a software update.

2010 Macbook air users don't download this

This update notably slows down the 2010 macbook air 13 and makes Steam games unplayable. This has been an issues since the 10.6.7 seeds and is the worst update ever. Yeah ever.

But for real, its ****ed.

Back in the days of 10.2, 10.3, 10.4, I used to get pretty excited by system updates. You could always see that something had changed. Now, not so much. Updates in 10.5 or 10.6 always feels just about the same to me each time.

I remember those days. Things changed so much that there were even screenshots of point updates on the main page. Ahhh the good old days...

This makes me think we are not going to see widespread TRIM support til Lion.

I'd say so given that such a feature that is critical (and what I mean by that is, if you get it wrong it can cause all sorts of problems like data loss) is hardly something that'll be added during mid-cycle. I am also sure that when Apple does integrate it they want to make sure it is fully integrated into the system rather than just hanging off the side like some sort of appendix.

this still does not fix the issues on the new MacBook Pro 2011 models (15" 2.3ghz) - just tested on the two machines we have here. Still they are getting too hot, constantly the fans are blowing (testing with Transmission/Bittorrent downloading the Ubuntu DVD). Also we had two freezes already (only under heavy load). I am posting updates on our findings to our blog ( http://j.mp/dLSqgy ) - and we are still waiting for replacements from apple.

It sounds like a problem at the factory rather than a design or software fault if that is the case given there are people here with the same configuration without the said issue whilst there are others who are still experiencing it; I wonder if someone collated all the serial numbers together and narrowed it down to whether it is isolated to a single factory.

still downloading, 75 minutes later... wtf? i'm in NYC and have relatively un-sucky (for most of the time) cable innernette... what gives, Akamai?

Meh, I got it pretty fast - and I'm on the other side of the globe, around 1.6MB/s.

Had it on for about 40 or 50 minutes. No new issues. Actually seems faster throughout the OS. 64-bit Safari issue with Flash and Youtube still not fixed.

Have you upgraded Flash to 10.2.153.1 yet?

Granted my 2.1 macbook has the intel 950 video but I've been getting this bit of laggy finder performance like whenever I select an item and send to trash its not instantaneous like it used to be for example.
Maybe this'll fix that.

I've noticed that also on my iMac and MacBook Pro which leaves me wondering whether it is something related to the Finder more than anything else - then again, both times it was attempted under a heavy load so I wonder whether Finder needs to be more heavily threaded.

Video drivers for the Intel 3000 were definitely updated in the 2011 version:

Before 10.6.7
AppleIntelHDGraphicsVADriver 1.6.30.19 ()
AppleIntelHDGraphicsGLDriver 1.6.30.19

After 10.6.7
AppleIntelHDGraphicsVADriver 1.6.32.12 ()
AppleIntelHDGraphicsGLDriver 1.6.32.12

Should be interesting to see the benchmarks before and after now.

I'd hesitate expecting big changes given that in Mac OS X Lion Developer Preview all the drivers have had massive version number jumps such as Nvidia move from 1.6.x to 7.0.52. What we're seeing today is merely kicking the can down the road till Lion arrives which is where all the driver effort is being directed.

That all oaky but when is Lion coming out?

In the summer - I assume you're trying to be funny or something because the question has been answered multiple times.

My God! I just got back from the Apple Insider forum on this issue. What a turd hole it is over there.

Of course but Macrumors is getting just as bad; just take a look at the above question by nec207 and the one below by dirtypancakes as an example of the quality lowering like lead balloon.

But for real, its ****ed.

It has slowed down because there were kernel panics occurring because of over heating - Apple decided to be more aggressive when it comes to frequency scaling and when the fans kick in. Oh how horrible, you're going to have a stable Mac!

Btw, why the heck are you expecting good performance on a device not designed to run games? dear god, I might as well whine that my Atom based netbook doesn't allow me to run Crysis with high settings enabled!

Build Number

As long as the build number is the same, yes.

I wouldn't rely on the build number. Apple could have modified some code then left the build number the same (on purpose or by accident), or Apple may have changed something in the after-build process in getting the release ready to download.

I don't have any examples of the above problem, it's mostly just me being paranoid.

Installed it on my Mac Pro 5,1.
Everything seems to be fine. Noticed some slight speed improvements across the whole OS.
Games like Portal, Team Fortress 2, Borderlands and Starcraft II seem to be slightly faster (although they were already running amazingly well, even at max settings).
One thing that's bothering me, though, is that the CPU now runs at a near-constant temperature of 40ºC and the Northbridge runs at 55ºC and up, even while idle.
Before the update, the CPU used to max out at 35ºC and the Northbridge at 50ºC (again, while idle). I know these temperatures are well within the "safe" values, but it seems weird that the system is now running hotter than before. The fans seem to be louder and spinning at a faster speed as well.
Probably not cause for alarm, but it is noticeable.

I can also confirm this on my part!

It would be interesting to benchmark these units before and after 10.6.7 to see if Apple tuned down the performance of the card to compensate for what was believed to be an overheating GPU.

Could have just been a problem with fan control, but does anyone else see this as very strange that an operating system patch fixed what was believed to be a heat issue?

The weather widget has been updated. :D

What router are you using? I'm about to give up on my Airport Extreme (N-dual band), the latest version. I've had more problems with Apple Airport Extremes than any other Apple product combined.
I'll take it.
That's a kernel panic, and is usually indicative of hardware issues. You should get your mac checked out.
My 2010 Mini reliably KPs if I attempt to boot it with my retail SL disc. The disc that came with the Mini works fine, and I've not seen a KP any other time. Thoughts? Oh, and the retail disc has worked fine on many other Macs.

For those who have plugins for Apple Mail, i'm sure you know that Mac OS X updates usually disables them if Apple Mail is updated. Well this time around it was. These are the new UUID's for Apple Mail for you to add to your plugins to enable them again.

1C58722D-AFBD-464E-81BB-0E05C108BE06
9049EF7D-5873-4F54-A447-51D722009310

This is what you need to do with those 2 UUID numbers -

If the plugin already got moved to ”~/Library/Mail/Bundles (Disabled)/” move it back to ”~/Library/Mail/Bundles/” (~ refers to your User folder)

Open ”~/Library/Mail/Bundles/NAME OF PLUGIN/Contents/Info.plist” with the Property List Editor (I prefer PlistEditPro) (to see the contents folder right click on the file and choose show contents)

Insert the two UUIDs under SupportedPluginCompatibilityUUID and save the document

Start the Mail APP and be happy :)

I'll also update my original post with this information so others will see it.

Thank you very much.

Does anyone with early 2008 Macbook 4,1 tried this update? If there's any, is there any performance improvement?

thanks!

The SL Disc has an older build of SL and the mini has hardware that wasn't properly recognized until the later build. :)

Sure!

Make a backup of your data, and replace the internal HDD with a WD GP HDD! Problem solved!

I would replace the HDD if Apple would allow me to without screwing the warranty.

I even approached the Apple Store in Exeter, UK about it with no joy.

Sad.....

thinking about that....

… I just went ahead and did and now it's installing software, and yup 10.6.7.

Idle process at 100%????

has anyone noticed in the istat thing in processes tha the "idle" process is almost at 100%??

is this normal??

whats using all that??

everything eles is almost nothing

I notice a lot of people talk about their CPU temps as being in the low 40's/50's (C). I have an early 2011 15" / i7 2.3ghz and according to iStat it usually sits at about 61C when not doing a lot, and will happily rise to 80/90 if I'm smashing it.

I'm not particularly worried but it seems like a big difference to what seems to be the 'usual' - might my thermal grease be poorly applied?

That is too high of an idle for my tastes. Mine will idle as low as 30-32 if it is cold outside and on a table or desk. Right now it is at 34 on my lap (17" 2011). I'd bring it back to the store and put it next to the display models to show them it is too hot. I'd expect it to get really hot or throttle quickly under load.

thats normal, "Idle" means nothing is using it. It has always been that way. Fear not.
