Apple has released MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.5. The update fixes an issue where the machine would shut off unexpectedly under heavy processor load, even when plugged in.
This update resolves an issue where a MacBook Pro being used with a power adapter may unexpectedly shut down under heavy workload if the battery charge level is near empty.

Your computer's power cord must be connected and plugged into a working power source, or your battery must be at least 25% charged.

When your computer restarts a gray screen will appear with a status bar to indicate the progress of the update.

Your computer's fans will run at full speed during the update but will return to normal speed once the update completes.

Do not disturb or shut off the power on your computer during this update.
MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.5 can be downloaded from Apple's support website.

The update applies to owners of MacBook Pro models 8,1, 8,2, and 8,3. These include both MacBook Pro (Early 2011) and MacBook Pro (Late 2011).

The liked source (Apple) doesn't indicate which MBP model this resolves this issue for. Unless I am missing something  .

I guess they're just talking about all of them since the requirements don't specify a specific model. It also said "all intel Macbook Pros" on the part written by Macrumors so i guess thats the case. It's not showing up on my 13" 2010 Macbook pro though. I guess it needs some time to fall through.

Edit: looks like it needs to be downloaded manually. #firstworldproblems kidding

Apple has released MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.5, for all Intel-based MacBook Pro's. The update fixes an issue where the machine would shut off unexpectedly under heavy processor load, even when plugged in.

Message I get when attempting to run the firmware update on a 2008 MacBook Pro: "ALERT: This software is not supported on your system."

So maybe not for *all* Intel-based MacBook Pro's?

That is all I was trying to figure out. I have a Late 2008 Unibody MBP, and have had this issue occur (powering off unexpectedly), but the upgrade won't install on my system either.

Apple's Source does not indicate which system this upgrade is for, so it is leaving everyone guessing :( .

The all intel MacBook pros was a mistake, it's not clear which MacBook pros its for

I'm also not seeing this in software update, and I have an early 2008 Macbook Pro, so I agree that I don't think this applies for all MacBook Pros.

EDIT: this page from Apple has a listing of the updates for EFI and SMC versions for all Intel Mac Models, but as of yet does not have this SMC 1.5 version listed. Once they list it, it should point out which models the update applies to.

Thanks Arn.

I wasn't calling out for a correction, simply confused as to why I couldn't install the upgrade. :)

This happens to my friend's Mac Mini, too! But it's triggered by Flash sites when he has a bunch of browser tabs open in any browser.

not for 2010 15"

Looks like its not for the 2010 15" models either, tried running and it says not supported on this system

The support document at the bottom of the linked page is dated April 14, 2010 and states this is for iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2009), iMac (27-inch, Late 2009).

I'm getting the same message that this MBP does not support the update. Sure seems like things have gotten a bit sloppy over in Cupertino as of late.

From the package

MacBookPro8,1','MacBookPro8,2','MacBookPro8,3

Code:
function InstallationCheck(prefix) {
	var models = ['MacBookPro8,1','MacBookPro8,2','MacBookPro8,3',];
....

So, that's all 2011 MacBook Pro models (all sizes)

Some of the new core family MacBook Pros, when under heavy CPU load, may actually begin drawing energy from the battery while plugged in. This update may be to prevent this from occurring when battery levels are too low to sustain system power.

Firmware Update for MBP's

Running a early 2010 MBP. No update fot it but there is a update for the Airport Extreme (5th Gen) from 7.5.2 to 7.6.

I should also mention this this goes for the Airport Express as well.

i have a late 2008 and this happens to me since the latest update to snow leopard. It used to just going into sleep when the battery died and i could plug it in and resume my work. I'm glad they fixed this

Nope.

I have a two week old MBPro 15". Tried running the installer and was presented with a message telling me it's not for this machine.

EDIT: It's a 8,2
