looks like I'm not the only person who does this ;)

If anybody decides to put this together, it might need to offer some decision making guidance based on risk and benefit... Answer 'why' some people opt for clean install vs 'upgrade'.

not much of a fan of iMore without Rene Ritchie, but for those that need it and understand risk/benenfit, i'm going to leave this here:

I really need this right now. My 16" MBP has become so damn slow lately, waking up takes ages, the finger print reader takes forever, the screen goes black every time the GPU switches, and it randomly wakes during sleep for no reason and turns the fans on to annoy me while I sleep. I don't know what they did but they really messed up the last release of Catalina. Hope I can leave it behind now.

Decided to try the RC2 version as that's all its offering me. 4GB downloaded lightening speed so the Big Sur issues are likely demand rather than local ISP issues.

super slow over here too. typical download speed over here is absolutely not this slow

So it seems like it's not stuck, just not updating very often. Mine went from 130 MB to 450 MB to 720 MB to 970 MB to 1.25 GB. So don't restart it... just wait.

EDIT: And now it's going quickly suddenly! About 400Mbps.

Which will arrive first, my Big Sur download or my M1 MBA?

I wished! I wished Apple would change their mind last minute and my 27-in iMac 2013 upgradeable. Didn't happen.
I don't have the choice but to upgrade, but I have to wait until there's an Apple Silicon iMac. I don't know if I'll ever be able to use Big Sur, but it sure seems like a good OS. I'm stuck on Catalina, which didn't really shine.

it can't be a demand thing because there are not that many geeks out there searching for it and initiating the download manually

Located in Austin, Texas and download speed is glacial (367 MB in 25 minutes). Looking at my data monitor, it appears it does nothing for a few minutes and then we get a spurt and then nothing. So they are having serious problems. I am surprised that it is this popular given the negative noises made about Catalina (the download for which was relatively quick and painless) and the changes in Big Sur are not exactly confidence inspiring (in that there are lot and Apple's software quality is not what it used to be).
