10.13.4 breaks eGPU on my Thunderbolt 2 MacBook Air. My Akitio node worked fine in 10.13.3, although I had to logout and log back in to use it when plugged in. Now the eGPU icon appears, but doesn’t show an eGPU, then disappears.
Do you like the Akitio node, and do you use it for gaming or have you experimented with AR? If High Sierra now allows it to work with TB2 Macs natively, I was looking at it for my current 2011 MBP and later a 2019 MBP.

I have the Mantiz, which is better than the node as it supports a data drive, higher psu, ethernet, and 5 usb 3 on the box.

High Sierra just BROKE egpu support for TB 1 and 2 devices with 10.13.4 where it WORKED on 10.13.0-10.13.3

I'll bet it's just cause whatever previous solution he was using was a hack that wasn't compatible.
Hack? not at all. It worked natively with nothing on my end to do

Well just because it worked doesn't mean Apple supported it. I can't find anything on Apple's site about macOS supporting TB2 eGPUs. egpu.io's guides definitely look like unsupported workarounds.

Damn. Sorry to hear that. And thanks for the info on the Mantiz.

No hack was used with 10.13.3 to get my Akitio node eGPU to work. I just plugged it in and the RX 580 card was recognized by the Mac. It just gave a pop up message saying to logout and log back in to use the eGPU. 10.13.4 sees the Akitio node, but does not recognize the GPU.

I have a 2011 MacBook Air 13.3” with the factory 128 GB SSD. I tried to install and got “macOS could not be installed on your computer” with error code com.apple.osinstall error -1.

When I try to get into recovery mode, I get an error that the disk is currently being encrypted. It is encrypted, but AFAIK it was done with the process. Help!

Most likely not, excluding hacks. The eGPU dev kit always used the AMD RX580. I saw somewhere that a few other AMD cards supported natively in macOS, but I forget where.

Nvidia cards don't even work properly as internal GPUs. Yes, I have a 660 in my Mac Pro, but it's glitchy and only receives updates from Nvidia directly. Same with my brother's 1060.

Update: eGPU.io has way better info than any of us will, haha. Here they list which cards; they're all AMD: https://egpu.io/external-gpu-macos-10-13-4-update/

This has been the case for a LONG time. Nvidia's drivers for MacOS have always been third-rate. It sucks because the GPUs themselves are decent; it's just that either Apple or Nvidia (or both) just can't write good MacOS drivers for them.

I've had three desktop Macs with GPUs and the only ones that have had graphical glitches and performance issues have been the Nvidia-based ones. AMD or Intel GPUs are the way to go with MacOS, period. These issues date back to 2006, too, which is why it's so maddening that Nvidia drivers are STILL not sorted out on MacOS. Twelve years.

- 2006 Mac Pro (came with an Nvidia 7300GT, absolutely garbage and glitchy. Radeon X1900XT and later 3750 GPU swaps fixed it)
- 2012 iMac with Nvidia GT 650M. Mostly stable but performance was lacking. Would crash in some games that exercise the GPU. Had all kinds of problems with High Sierra.
- 2015 iMac with AMD Radeon R9 M395. Absolutely perfect GPU performance. No issues at all.

I'm going to make every effort I can to never buy a Mac with an Nvidia GPU again. Lesson learned!

Safari is so bad now. I switched to Firefox. Hope this updates fixes Safari rendering issues.

So here's the deal, my specs are in my signature below for my cMP.

I updated to the new release today and noticed that upon shutting down, the screen goes black for a bit, and dancing white dots appear on the lower/right quadrant of my display. It looks like a partial word if you connect the dots. Well... or at least W.... Is what it looks like, IDK what this is.

After about 2 seconds of the dancing dots, the Mac shuts down as normal.

Anone have a clue what that's about?

Haha I'm not going to install Snow Leopard on my 2011 MBP. High Sierra runs great on this thing.

Was just thinking the same thing. I run a 2011 MBP and there were a few years after I bought the machine where MacOS updates started slowing it down, but after El Capitan it's just been getting faster with every update. High Sierra is certainly faster than Snow Leopard, which is excellent given the former has patches for Spectre and Meltdown.

These old machines paired with an SSD are just as fast for day-to-day tasks as any brand new machine Apple sells. I bought a 13" non-touchbar MBP and returned it (in part) because it was slower to boot and slower to load apps than my 2011 w/SSD.

Black Screen after Update on my MacBook Pro 2016... :-/

Update: Did a forced restart after 15 minutes of black screen... now it tells me it will take 15 minutes to finish the installation

Update 2:
macOS started and reopened all apps while I had a blank window with spinning gear on top of it... after like 2 minutes the Mac asked me for my password again... then Apple wanted to know if I want to share system information with them...

Come on Apple...

Update 3:
The AppStore is back with the "hey let's install 10.13.4 since although I went through all the steps above, I'm back on 10.13.3...

Let's not try this again

Sounds like is not worth the update.

Yeah wallpaper! What about iMessages in cloud? Maybe that will be a 64 bit only like iOS 11.

Forget the iMessages in cloud ☁️ it’s all about wallpapers!!
[doublepost=1522381727][/doublepost]I’m glad I have not updated to macOS high Sierra.

Are they ever going to update the signal bars on personal hotspot devices to match iOS 11? It still shows the pre-iOS 11 dots.

I'm pretty sure 10.13.4 will slow computers down because it has the Skylake microcode update for Spectre Variant 2. Not updated yet on the Sandy Bridge I checked.
