What the difference? Should I be going the combo route? Is it the ota/itunes kinda deal?

The regular update - is basically a delta that only contain files that have been changed since the previous build like OTA - patch update

The combo contain all files since the original release of that major release like iTunes update - full firmware update

Is there a reason why Apple hadn't released an actual web app 'Messages' on iCloud.com? If they do that, does that means it will hurt iPhone and iPad sales?
That wasn't something that was going to be part of it even when it was announced.

Do you loose all the security of iMessage when sync it to iCloud? Like when Apple can restore the data of you iCloud backup.
It's still encrypted, just like other iCloud data has been encrypted.

There was a time when Apple refrained from vapourware. Today, under Cook, they are beginning a dangerous trend into vapourware that brings the respect level down several "notches".

It is one full year and now they are delivering it. These guys used to perfect things in the back before releasing, and one could buy products and use services right on the day of announcement, not any longer. I do not know why, understand why, but I do not like this trend.

Messages in Cloud: 3 days before iOS 12 instead of shipping with 11.
HomePod was announced to come months later, released even more months later.
iMac Pro, previewed. Why! Just launch when ready!

There used to be pride in it. But I do sincerely feel that any kind of personalisation, any sort of character of a company was lost the day Jobs passed away.
Well, it's not vaporware if it's actually released.

Just spent about 45 minutes on the phone with apple explaining to them that the current implementation for IOS is not parity complete with desktop - there is no way to hide messages from the list if you swipe your only option is to DELETE from every were - not ideal.

1. Apple must implement some trash can feature and ability to restore accidental deletions on device with out having to restore from backup.

2. When you decide to remove the entire transcript you must be required to enter your iCloud password since the action is destructive across all devices.

3. Clarity as to what keeping messages 'forever' means in the settings - does this supersede and persist over the on device deletion.

4. Swiping left on a Message from someone SHOULD NOT DELETE the transcript from all devices!! It should archive the conversation so that it can come back when ever you engage with the party again.

5. There should be some 'view message transcript' from the contacts app so you can review all messages, regardless if they have been 'archive/dismissed' from the messages.

5. What happens if you have a group thread does it delete the group thread or ALL transcripts from the individuals in the thread.

Messages in iCloud on the iPhone is always telling me to connect to WiFi and power while uploading messages. It also seems to get stuck a lot on "Downloading Messages" with progress bar. What a hassle!

Doesn't matter if it works or not. With the new Apple under Cook it is fantastic and the best Apple has ever released. Apple will now start working on WWDC 2018 features, which will necessitate putting these pesky bug fixes on the back burner. Got to get ready for 2019 WWDC, its only 12 months away.

Initially, it will have to sync a crapload of messages, you do know that huh.

So here's what I don't understand: If I send a message to person X, and then delete that message, assuming this all works like it should, that message will disappear forever from all of the devices I have currently signed into using my iCloud account for messages. But what about the recipient? Will the message live on in their side of the conversation?

Surely you don't expect Apple to have thought that far ahead. They only announced it would be in the cloud 12 months ago, not that it would work with the POLA (principle of least astonishment).

Urgh. I still experience the bug where the Messages app displays the telephone numbers for contacts, instead of their names which I have saved in Contacts.

Messages in iCloud is working fine though.

What does that have to do with thinking ahead? Why would someone's actions cause something to be deleted on someone else's device? Short of specific messaging services designed for that type of thing, it's not how something like text messaging or email, for example, works.
I'll bet even with the delay it does not work correctly for a lot of people. This is a release just to get Cook off the hook during WWDC.
You mean even when software is delayed to work something out or for some other reasons it can still have bugs/issues when it's actually released?

Does this fix the Sleep Wake Failure that have been plaguing a number of macs? Seems to be related to disk encryption on AFPS drives.
