Created a APFS partition on my MBP HDD and cloned over a copy of HS HFS+ to the APFS using CCC.
First boot was looooong but 2nd boot was about the same speed so no improvement on boot times even with APFS with a physical HDD.
I'll wait for the next update and see and compare HFS vs APFS boot times.
Once either boots they seem workable as a normal MacOS for general use.

Macbook Air Mid 2012 i7 / 8GB, if anyone has one or something close and upgrades pls let us know how it is and good luck!!
I have that model and it was successful but I have copies of Sierra just in case I need to fall back. Only app that was trouble was my Photoshop CS3. Has trouble using FILE:OPEN dialog. Could be a java problem since it had to be reinstalled.
I also am fiddling around with a clean install of HS on the HDD and APFS to see if any faster.
It might be good to test after you have an image copy using CCC or other duplicator. That way you don't have to do a clean install and reinstall.
[doublepost=1506918712][/doublepost]After booting from various clean installs and updated to latest OS X and MacOS on my MBP mid 2012 with HDD this is what I found:
10.7, 10.8, 10.9, 10.10 all 50-60 seconds
10.11, 10.12, 10.13 all 83-93 seconds
High Sierra APFS HDD 83 seconds.
10.12 HFS+ = 10.13 APFS boot times
So there's lots of room for improvement for physical HDD. Should boot below 60 seconds if they want to impress.
