I've done a bit of testing with Blender and the render performance was impressive on my 6800 XT on 12.3. It takes a good while (4-5 minutes) to compile the render kernel for the first time but once compiled, the Metal render performance was about 4x as fast as my M1 Pro 10-core CPU 16-core GPU Metal rendering on both the CPU and GPU in my tests. I don't recommend updating though because overall system performance and snappiness takes a HUGE hit from 12.2.1 -> 12.3. It's not just Geekbench that suffers, the entire system lags, has graphical artifacts, and slows down to the point where I reinstalled 11.6 on a separate hard drive and have been using that since updating to the 12.3 betas.
Thanks for this, is the 6800xt and egpu? Do you think the lag is bc apple is less friendly to egpu setups now? Or is it an intel Mac metal issue overall?

I only have words for disappointment in Apple now adding features for M1-based systems only. There is plenty of heavy work that I do on my 27' iMac (2020) and I'm pretty sure it can handle things like 'dynamic head tracking audio' or the new Maps. Poor show.

Is anyone experiencing excessive heat while doing very minimal tasks? It has been several hours since I updated to macOS 12.3 and I have a MacBook Pro 2019 16” and it is running quite warm while browsing the web. The fans are not very loud just slightly but I didn’t experience this heat when doing the same tasks before on macOS 12.2.1. I did a PRAM reset but have yet to do an SMC reset. I am just more curious if anyone else is noticing their computer being warmer than before after updating to macOS 12.3.

I used to get a consistent 60 fps on an FPS that I play before upgrading to 12.1. After upgrading, it immediately drops to around 50. I also experienced delays in another game where after 5 minutes of play, the game would just pause on its own for 2 seconds before returning to normal. This goes on for the entire time I play the game. Games that run on Metal are less affected.

It seems that the new function where you can stream audio and video content through AirPlay to Mac requires a new persistent process that isn't optimized for Intel Mac. Universal Control more than likely exacerbates the situation as it requires a new persistent process too. The only mitigating factor is the Metal engine, but not all games run on Metal. Your mentioning of visual artifacts lends more weight to this theory. Both functions eat up so many graphics resources that they're affecting system performance.

If past experience is anything to go by, this isn't the kind of problem Apple will solve. Their focus now is on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs are falling by the wayside. I've since downgraded to Big Sur and I recommend people who use Intel Macs to do the same. Big Sur is likely the last stable and usable macOS for Intel Macs.

How is Monterey compared to Bug Sur?? my 14 Macbook can't get it :(

I've used it for half a day on a 2021 MacBook Pro and a 2015 MacBook Pro and have not run into any problems. Performance seems to have improved from 12,2.1 on my M1 Pro. Mail performance is notably better. This release is also not shy about using RAM. My usage is higher than on 12.2.1. I also really like Universal Control.

I was running YouTube videos on my 2015 MacBook Pro this morning and the fans didn't come on. The fans did come on while doing the update though.

I had spotlight indexing tasks and mail format updating that ran for quite a while on this laptop after the update so I just left it running until it finished. Those tasks can use up a lot of CPU time - so maybe you need to give it a day?

Monterey completely SCREWS people with 5000 and 6000 series GPUs, halving their performance, both in benchmarks and real world usage (games, blender, etc).

This NEEDS to be made a huge headline on MacRumors, Apple's really dropped the ball on this. Anyone whos got a dGPU should avoid 12.3 like the plague.
I really would love to know if this performance loss also affects the AMD Radeon VII.

I have been using a Mac mini (top of the range Intel one) with a 4K LG monitor for some time; latterly with macOS 12.2. I upgraded today to 12.3 and got a blank screen when it came to the login prompt. Tried all the usual tricks, nothing helped.

I remembered that I had had some problem driving the display when I first got it via USB-C. Somehow I had got that to work and had no problems since. I replaced the USB-C cable with an HDMI one and the LG display burst into life. So, in one sense I am happy again. However, I have tried various combinations of cabling to get back to the USB-C one without success. (I need to get and try a brand new USB-C cable.)

Any ideas?

My GPU is internal PCIe, so I suspect it has to do with the changes made to the AMD graphics driver to support Blender and/or other graphics intensive processes added in 12.3. I'm holding out hope that Apple addresses this in a future update since it seems to be affecting many 2019 Mac Pro users who have added upgraded AMD 5xxx and 6xxx series GPUs, but not sure how much attention it will realistically get given the shift to Apple Silicon.

Reversing the supplied USB-C cable made it work!

So it looks like universal control doesn't work with a 4k LG Ultrafine display. Have the new 5k Apple Display ordered. Hopefully it works on that one.

Anyone notice that the size of the actual update is different? When you click Info, it shows it as 4.4GB but the actual download is 5.29GB.

12.3 Has just vanished? It was there as an update 10 mins ago, I just went to update now and it says update no longer available? Now just shows 12.2.1..? Was there a problem with it?

My word - Universal control is blowing my tiny mind....I can control my mac, macbook pro and ipad from my all of my peripherals and macbook...So far its awesome

Safari feels snappier. Also before this update, Safari has had a weird scrolling "stuttering" when using keyboard up / down arrows, (at least on my M1 Air), when pressing and and holding the arrow keys (fast repeat), now the scrolling is smooth like in other browsers ! ?

It's all in your head. There is no discernable difference in safari in 12.3
