Apple Releases macOS Monterey 12.5 With Safari and TV App Updates

I'm hearing a few bricked Macs here. Any patterns on why it's been happening for a few people?

I'm personally using the MBP 16" 2021, any reports of bricking on the M1 MBP 16??

One report of the update bricking a MacBook Pro:
Same happed to me - Firmware corruption- reviving now with Apple Configurator using my 2017 MBP - been at it 2 hours - both machines tied up. If it does not work, next step is to rebuild entire MBR M1 16” 2021 - nightmare - loosing a whole day of work - bad Apple

Update: Revive did not work - restoring now - new built from scratch - I am used to s..t like that from Microsoft but never from Apple :-(

I run almost all the betas for Monterey using a M1 Max 16" never had that happen. Some people that use antivirus and cleaning apps can run into problems had been discussed in Apple communities causing issues. If you have the Mac backed up so you can use Migration Assistant you can always do a factory reset (DFU Restore) at the store if this happens.

Yeah it's just been weird since so far there are quite a few having bricked Macs from the update. Kinda scared to update it now lol. Especially if revive function doesn't even work lol (so far what I'm seeing from posts?) . Already made an updated bootable installer to upgrade though (I always update using a full installer since it's usually better and less error prone)

Lol, I found a good one. I have a USB-C to ethernet adapter (with 3 USB ports). Based off of the AX88179A chipset. Network Preferences does not show the adapter as connected. `ifconfig` does show the device connected and ethernet is working! It all worked properly before the update.

At least I have not lost use of the adapter.

Did restoring work?? Also, what version did you restore it with?

when bug fixes nears the end.. Apple release next macOS full of bugs
EU stop that practice, force Tim every 2 years a new macOS

2.2 gigs on my M1 MBP and all they've done is fix the Safari Tabs and something else for the TV. 😂😆

Love how detailed the releases notes are-nt. I want to know all about the little tiny things now purring along.

Anything stand out that they've done?, without reading pages of beta chat, sorry been to involved with ios16. So if someone does have the time for any highlights better than the release notes for 12.5, thanks in advance, appreciated - they don't have to be detailed.

Kinda relieved I just did the update prior to viewing this thread on here as I think I would’ve been too concerned to do so otherwise. The update has, thankfully, worked a treat for me and no issues (so far!) on my end. In fact, it might be in my head but my Mac feels snappier, especially Safari.

Does Apple stagger update availability to reduce server load? I'm running 12.4, and this is what I see when I check for available updates in the App store.

EDIT: NVM, @Markgync2 explained it's not done through the App Store in Moneterey. [I recently switched from an older Mac using High Sierra, and the updates in that OS are done through the App Store.]
You need to learn how to get them .

Why so negative. ?
It would actually be quite useful and interesting to see a proper statistical view of update issues.

It might include "No problem", "Minor problem", "Major problem", and by chip family (Intel vs. AS), by model/year (MBP, iMac, Studio, etc.). (Obviously, repeated for each OS.)

A few days after an update has been released, check my machines against the report. If loads have updated, but problems almost zero, confidently go ahead. But if few have updated, and the problem rate is high, wait.

Reading through the threads for each update can be so tedious and still give an inaccurate impression.

How about MR producing an app (for each OS, if needed) which will report updates being done and allow encountered issues to be identified? Could probably almost automatically identify machine and report start and end of update. But would need input to know if there were any problems.

I guess there are more parameters determining if problems will occur. The amount of OS's that were installed on top of each other (residu), software used (like all those 'handy tools'), crappy computers, crappy peripherals, knowledge of the user etc.

I'm sure there are many more factors that could be included. Certainly wasn't meaning to prescribe a list - just provide some examples of what had occurred to me.

However, if we see virtually no issues on AS Mac minis, there might be little reason to go deeper and consider many more factors. But if there are lots of issues on Intel iMacs, then using further criteria might help to both warn the fewest possible people and identify where the cause(s) might lie.

I'm on an M1 Macbook Air and since Day 1 of Big Sur I've had lag/frame drops when using the 3-finger swipe between desktops. There's still an occasional frame drop with 12.5, but I see it's greatly improved from 12.4. Now to fix the purple glitching when scrolling through App Exposé...

Escalated Apple Service Tech call last night was unable to resolve the issue, will be visiting an Apple Store tomorrow to try and fix the issue.

DFU revive/restore would have to be at the store usually for Mac owners. Hope you have your Mac Studio backed up in case of the restore is a full erase.

Always, backed up in time machine via a redundant NAS, and online via Backblaze. Most important files not even kept on the internal drive. The internal drive is not showing up so it seems to have failed in some way.

it's because they don't focus that much on the UI anymore, but more on what people are asking (i want to believe that)...new features. Miss the old OS's when we didn't had that many features, but everything was so smooth because they didn't had anything else to focus on, but the UI.
