I've been unable to send Exchange mail in the 15.4 Apple Mail app (since the update) - I can receive email, access older files, use the calendar, etc. but my send functionality has been disabled (I can select "Send" but it becomes grayed out and sits there)... everything worked great before the update. Yes, I wish I could get off Exchange, but my work uses it, so.... *smiles* Thanks for reading!

Unfortunately the Mail contact photo situation seems to be quite different between MacOS 15.4 Mail and iOS Mail, even though 'categories' have been brought to parity.
Namely, many of the picture icons in iOS mail automatically customize, like Amazon will show the Amazon logo DoorDash will show a utensils next to the email. This doesn't seem to have made its way to MacOS even though categories did.
Or is it a bug on my end? Would have been nice.

They can change defaults and system settings, it is their OS. I don't disagree with you, one of the reasons I dropped Windows was because MS kept chaging settings, and forcing their browser and search engine onto me. But it is still their OS.
Apple keep turning on the AI, at the end of the day, however annoying it is, they have the right to do that.
At the end of the day, as a mate said to me, if you want a OS that you want more control over, then Linux is the way to go.
Thankfully, Apple did not turn AI back on, with this update
I can avoid it, well at home anyway, unless Amazon forces it onto my Echo dots when they do the updates.
I can avoid it for the most part at work as well and even the stuff at work that is run by AI, I have nothing to do with it.
Looking at how bad Gemini, Chat GPT and others are at answering simple questions, I think we still have a long way to go.

After upgrade to macOS 15.4
Following issues to report:
MacBook Air M1 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD,
-Installed 1Password for me even if I do not use it (had used before - ca one year ago).
-iMessage crashes every 10-15 minutes
No issues:
Mac mini M2 Pro 32GB RAM and 1TB SSD.

KDE is a "desktop environment' to be precise. But it does bear striking resemblance as you have KDE as desktop environment (DE), Window Manager and then a suite of apps based on KFramework.
What I was argueing - macOS/Apple could learn from them and have the OS updates focus on the actual OS (so in Linux terms it would be kernel + base apps + DE/WE) and then leave app updates to be something separate.
But - apart from apps, it would probably leave changelog for the macOS new version basically empty... 🙄

All tests come up good. System has gotten more responsive. I suspect it was something like spotlight indexing while I was trying to do a bunch of stuff at the same time. 🤷♂️

Update went smoothly on my M2 MacBook Air. But, my M1Pro MacBook Pro froze upon on restarting, with the Setup Assistant in the foreground, and Safari in the background. But, both windows were blank. I had to force-restart to get out of that. Fortunately, I backed up my MBP just before I updated. May have to restore, and try the update again. Not happy.
Yeah, I meant desktop environment, just could not think of the word at the time 🙂
What you want is not going to happen, from Windows 95 to the latest Windows 11, MS have been updating the apps and installing more and more stuff tthat I don't need. I don't know about Apple over the years as i have not long jumped onto the Apple wagon as to speak 🙂, but i expect they have been doing the same thing.

The download was big (6+ GB) but the actual update went well on my M4 Pro Mac Mini. It didn't re-enable Apple Intelligence like the last two updates. And unlike on iOS, Mail categories were not automatically enabled. I just clicked Turn Off and it hasn't prompted me since. 👇 So far, everything seems to be working fine. 🤞

Several people at my work with M1-based Macs have reported identical, repeated panic crashes when they’ve tried to upgrade to Sequoia 15.4.
I found a few mentions of this exact panic on the Apple Discussion forums and one on a German Mac enthusiast site, but that’s about it so far.

Since Upgrade to 15.4 on my iMac the icloudagent started going crazy. Even my iMacs fans came on - something that happens virtually never. Below the shot from activitymonitor. The Mac was started around 3h ago, so already the icloudmailagent accumulated 2:30h

Yes, they have (Safari being the most notorious) but... it doesn't make it right 😉 Neither does competition doing the same stuff. MS started bundling the IE just to get rid of competition (same with other apps, like Skype/Teams…).
I get that they may want to offer "complete environment" that's well integrated and consistent but they don't have to sync all the releases (and neither bundle all the stuff) 🙂
I just feel like it makes it harder to find my emails - especially new ones that come thru. I already have a specific way of organizing my emails. But I'm old and hate change LOL - I'm starting to get a LITTLE bit used to it though.

I can understand why they update safari, the same reason why MS updated Internet Explorer and Edge when they changed to that. Security., Sure they do add stuff onto it that I don't want, but at least you have a choice of different browsers. Saying that, a lot of them have stuff I don't use. I am using Brave at the moment, and it has stuff I don't use, but at least I can ignore the bits I don't use.
You are correct about MS and IE, I remember Windows 95 coming out with the now with Internet Explorer on the front.
I read a few years somewhere that MS did not call Windows an operating system any more, it was something like a computer environment or something like that and not an operating system
I don't disagree with you, since Windows 7/8 I started to get fed up with the extras that were bolted on and MS started to make it more difficult to get rid of stuff I did not need. My view was if I wanted the stuff I can install it after, I feel the same way with browsers, more and more is bolted onto browsers, my view if I wanted the extras, then I would install them as extensions.
As I said above, I am using Brave, it has AI, an advert blocker, add password management, I hate using them built into browsers. A reward thing and a wallet for crypto.
I prefer to be able to add them in if i want to. I suppose they take less resources built in than as extensions.
But I don't use any of them.
I used to use a Chromium based browser a few years ago I can't remember the name now, it was great, very little added to it, sadly it was not updated security wise for a while, so I had to drop it .
Before I changed to a Mac, i did think about Linux and I do have it on my PC, on another drive, I have MX linux, but it just don't have the software I need, or the software is not there in quality.
Now, I have a Circut cutting machine, no software on Linux for it, which is a shame. They used to have their software online, so it could work with any platform, but they don't now.
We just have to cope
I don't know if I hate it all not myself, I have not tried it, but I turned it straight off as I don't feel it is something I need.
That is the good thing, we can turn it off and choose. If I could not turn it off, then I would have gone back to Thunderbird.

Turned mailbox categories off in seconds. The «AI» miscategorized most of the mail’s and it was annoying to have to search for incoming emails.This, if working, might be a boon for people checking their inbox once or twice a day, if you are more reactive it is not helpful at all just like some important emails get lost in spam you now have four times the places to search for incoming messages.
That said, AI spellcheck is a step forward but feels like hidden and a bit unstable in terms of UX and implementation. And not as good in results as GPT or Claude. And is it just me or does the Friendly rewrite tonality makes mails sound more unfriendly?
