I'm not a fan of night shift. I like how Flux gradually increases the orange instead of how night shift does it in one go.

I'll be sticking with FLUX

someone enlighten me here- do I have to use nightshift buried in system pref's display option tab?

or is there a menubar add-on to see it and adjust it on the fly?

edit- I see its in Notification Center.

I actually like that. Already have enough going on on my menubar, with iStat, etc.
Can you post a screenshot of that?

Now announcing... NightShift for macOS Sierra!

I hate Microsoft for a lot of reasons but what I hate the most is that they are coping Mac OS Features and putting those features in W10, if I write down here all the features that Microsoft stole from Mac OS I will never finish. w10 is built on stolen Mac OS features but after seeing that horrendous w10 I realize that they are cheap imitations and they look ugly, not the real deal, anyway Microsoft already copied night shift and they are going to put it in the next w10 update, the feature is called night light. i updated to 10.12.4 and I have no issues, everything just works.

Night shift and all that have been around in the form of f.lux and the like for some time. It's not something that Apple came up with or anything like that. Just more OS manufactures are deciding to bring that feature into the OS itself finally, as they have done with all kinds of other features over the years.

No, as in my reply to (some) others, there is no need to do a clean install, I started using OS X from the beginning (10.0b) and never reinstalled the OS, not even when Apple went from PPC to Intel.
Just make sure you make a backup before you install in case something gets messed up, it happens but it's rare.

Thanks @justperry for your reply and insight! I have a very tight back-up scheme with Carbon Cloner Copy, so I'm set to go!

Cheers

My boot-up progress bar on the iMac also changed to a thick grey one too and there was a long beeeeeeep when it first booted which was unusual.

No night shift option here on my 2011 iMac but its okay because I have no intention of using it.

Anyone cares to share a screencap for the update/fw tweak resulting in a different bar. For all of us to verify during update!

Cheers

No APFS? Beyond that, a welcome update. :)
I thought it was coming to MacOS with this update, I agree its a big change so they need to be ready. I'm now running Time Machine with a weekly CCC backup on a separate HDD. Just in case the worst happens at any time but more so with the APFS change.

Just more proof Apple doesn't care about Mac anymore.

Xcode is the only reason they keep Macs around. If you could write software for iOS on iOS, the Mac would already be history.

I was wondering what that was, but it works. We're in the same boat now...obsolete laptops.

Yeah, and people are always bitching about Microsoft. Windows 10 runs flawlessly on my 8.5 years old Dell XPS 1530 -- you would never see a current version of macOS run AT ALL on a Mac that old. And the scary thing is that this old Dell does not even feel much slower than my 2.5 years old 13" Retina MacBook Pro running Sierra. (And the new XPS 13 that I have runs circles around that MacBook Pro.) The times when Apple hard- and software could still impress ended a few years ago.

It was mentioned in several Threads on MR that the APFS will probably come in the 10.13

As far as I understand, APFS is only available for developers to play around with it and it's still under development for Mac.
You can convert to APFS but in no way it's ready to be used on a day to day use - and I would strongly recommend to wait for next OS release.

Cheers

This update appears to have fixed a problem with the left hand Thunderbolt ports on my late 2016 15" MBP.

Had it booked in with Apple for logic board or I/O board replacement as the left hand ports would not feed the 27" 5K LG display I got - now after 10.12.4 update it works fine on the left ports as well as the right hand ones.

I installed it. I went through my standard 'new system tweaks', which included having the drive icons on the desktop show the free space. The new os was wrong about that number. I tried to roll with it and see how it would let me get to that much free space, but I found nothing that worked. If an OS can't even accurately tell you how much free space you have on the storage device, what good is it?

It can accurately tell how much free space you have. Apple just defaults to something you didn't have in mind. But I have hard time understanding why this matters? So your drive now shows "458GB" instead of "453GB". What is the big deal that makes you ditch ALL other updates and new features in Sierra? Do you need constantly know the free space? You must be joking, right?

Just noticed that I had to uninstal then re-instal 'Magnet' for it to work correctly. All the key combos were greyed out.

So if any of your handy apps don't appear to be working try the uninstal reinstal method!

For those who don't know, 'Magnet' is a app resizer - top left - top right - bottom left etc.

Well - I accidentally just posted the article - what I meant to do was ask - with three updates - does it matter which you do first? (I have OS, iOS and watch devices)

I can't see how the order matters at all, but I always do one at a time to completion before the next in case I get stuck and need to use the other device to unlock two factor authentication.

Don't be ridiculous. Everyone steals ideas off one another. For example, Notification Centre in iOS & macOS was an idea stolen from Android, but I don't see you crying about that.

I like the idea that a broad set of features are commonly available in every OS/device that I use.

?? Why is it a bad thing if good features are copied?? I don't get that at all. The single best thing that drives technology forward rapidly is that good practices/features can be replicated and developed further. Every OS copies something from others. And that is a good thing.

I hope Apple will copy the great "drag a window to the edge of the screen"-feature which is lightyears ahead of macOS split view thingy. And vice versa for some other features. I love that software houses copy good features and ideas.

(I use daily Win10, macOS and Linux and get the job done with all of them. I don't like black&white fanboyism at all...)

Wow did you just walk put of a 1997 mac user group where the topic was 'I hate windows '95?
Why do you even care about windows. Apple and the Mac have plenty of more serious self inflicted problems than what microsoft may be copying.
And when it comes to nightshift - Apple copied Flux!! So your outrage with windows copying features seems wholly disingenuous.

Good bye Flux, won't be missing you..

Night Shift is an "all or nothing" solution, which is useless for me and many others.

Many of us prefer F.lux because it allows you to disable it on a per-app basis.
For example when using any photo or video editor, the last thing you ever want is something like Night Shift kicking in. Watching movies too - don't want them all orange!

That said, Night Shift might encourage us not to work so late at night...

Seems like they implemented it using the latest technology that was perhaps most appropriate as far as what they wanted to do and how they wanted to accomplish it. It doesn't necessarily mean there's any particular conspiracy theory at work, just fairly basic use of the latest and greatest of what's available essentially.

How much technology is required to offset the colors on the display? I doubt the latest and greatest was needed to accomplish the task.

True, but disabling Night Shift takes one swipe and one click. So it's really not a big deal. F.lux is good, but has serious full screen color bug which they won't be fixing. Night Shift works properly in that regard.

copying until certain point of degree is acceptable but when a company doesn't come with their own ideas an all that company does is copied the other company then for me that is completely unacceptable, I have self esteem and dignity. I'll be completely embarrassed if I dress like my neighbor and get the same haircut, talk like him or act like him, I like being different, that is what separate me from the others and that is what makes me unique but if you like windows then that's fine with me I respect your taste but I personally can't stand windows anymore, I admit maybe is a phycological problem. that os has a weird effect on me, it just infuriate me.

an apple user defending Microsoft Windows that is what is disingenuous, apple integrated that option into their os from a free third party app and anyway for what I know they might be similar in functionality but they don't look exactly the same, so night shift is more like a modified version of flux, I used windows for almost 20 years until I discovered Mac OS leopard then everything changed I started learning Mac os little by little I started moving to Mac OS until I finally didn't need or want windows any more then when Microsoft destroyed windows with fisher price blocks, with the merged 2 in 1 os it's a tablet or it's a computer I said enough is enough I moved on and never look back, you want to defend windows but the windows fans do not defend Mac OS but that's all right, there is no reason to get upset over that.

peace out

Anyone else having trouble playing live audio (e.g. BBC iPlayer radio, Classic FM) in Safari 10.1? It works fine with Chrome. The problem appeared with the first developer beta of 12.4, and has persisted ever since. I've reported it with each beta, and if it is a real bug, it's a bit shabby releasing the final version with a bug known from the first build still in it.
