This is so cute, a Mac OS update. it's almost as if Apple cares about the Mac product line. Which by the pitiful state of neglect is woefully behind the times.

Apple where art thou?

Update: Apple has also released a new 2017-001 security update for OS X Yosemite and OS X El Capitan.

They also updated safari to a 10.1 version for Yosemite, El Capitan and Sierra.

You don't have to update it separately for Sierra because it is part of the 10.12.4 update.

However it comes as a separate update for Yosemite and El Capitan.

So here they are for Yosemite and El Capitan:

Apple today released macOS Sierra 10.12.4, the fourth major update to the macOS Sierra operating system that launched on September 20. macOS Sierra 10.12.4 has been in testing since January 24, with Apple having seeded eight betas ahead of its public release.

macOS Sierra 10.12.4 is a free update for all customers who are running macOS Sierra. The update can be downloaded using the Software Update function in the Mac App Store.

macOS Sierra 10.12.4 brings iOS's Night Shift mode to the Mac for the first time. Night Shift, first introduced on iOS devices in iOS 9.3, is designed to gradually shift the display of a device from blue to a subtle yellow, cutting down on exposure to blue light. Blue light is believed to interrupt the circadian rhythm, disrupting sleep patterns.

Night Shift is activated through the Displays section of System Preferences, where a setting to have it come on at sunset and turn off at sunrise is available. It can also be set to turn on and off at custom times. Night Shift can also be toggled on manually using the Notification Center or Siri.

The 10.12.4 update focuses primarily on Night Shift, but the update also includes dictation support for Shanghainese, cricket score integration for Siri, improved PDFKit APIs, and new iCloud Analytics options.

Update: Apple has also released a new 2017-001 security update for OS X Yosemite and OS X El Capitan.

Safari had an update also.

I have two ASUS MG24U monitors connected to my 2016 15" MacBook Pro via USB-C -> DisplayPort cables, and they support NightShift no problem, so it's not limited to only the monitors on the support article...

This is a bit ridiculous; it would be trivial to implement Night Shift with ICC color profiles. Not only that but color profiles work through hardware so there's no performance hit.

Yeah, but then Apple wouldn't be able to sell new Macs to people with older Macs who feel left out of the Night Shift, um, excitement. All part of the typical Apple planned obsolescence strategy.

I understand that computers get old, and maybe some new features can't run on old devices due to performance requirements and so on.. but.. night shift??? This has to be a joke

I wouldn't mind not supporting features if Apple did a better job with actually making their software work. It is one thing to not support Night Shift on old devices. It is another to say macOS Sierra otherwise runs on my 2011 iMac and yet Time Machine stops working without any warning to me and external drives get ejected when the machine sleeps.

Seems like they implemented it using the latest technology that was perhaps most appropriate as far as what they wanted to do and how they wanted to accomplish it. It doesn't necessarily mean there's any particular conspiracy theory at work, just fairly basic use of the latest and greatest of what's available essentially.

Bricked my 2016 m3 rMB. Halfway through it gave me an error message and said it had to restart. Now I enter my password at the log in screen and get stuck on a black screen. Not f***ing impressed Apple.
Exact same here! I see that it's doing something during login (progression bar), but it never reaches desktop and goes dark... I even did a refresh install to no avail... Pretty pissed at this point...

I tried using Night Shift on iOS, I really didn't like it. Basically just made my screen look dingier and crappier. And didn't seem to help me "get into a restful state" or whatever it's supposed to do.

Froze after the first boot. Had to unplug my USB drives and forced it to shut down. Hopefully it reboots again.

Still froze with the screen not completely back. Should I force shut down and reboot it?
Late 2013 iMac 21.5 inch i5.

Well - I accidentally just posted the article - what I meant to do was ask - with three updates - does it matter which you do first? (I have OS, iOS and watch devices)

I just gave night shift a try on my iMac and it hurt my eyes. I can't explain it but it made my eyes feel like they where straining.
