Hoped this would fix the crashing Mail has done every time I try to open it since Mavericks launched. *sigh* I REALLY don't want to reinstall the OS. Why can't you just download the built in apps.

We recently dropped Gmail completely and couldn't be happier. Other IMAP email services work great in the Mail app. Gmail's nonstandard IMAP implementation is a headache and is the only oddball. Other email clients have problems with it as well. In this day and age with mobile devices and tablets, I'm finding very little need to ever visit a website to access my email so Gmail had to go.

That reminds me of the funniest line

"Google is in favor of open standards"

Laugh with me.

It didn't seem to change anything with my custom domain gmail account. But I wasn't really having any problems before....

I think the fact that people are still having problems with Gmail is a sign... that people need to drop Gmail as quickly as possible. This is the second major company (Microsoft isn't having much luck with Gmail either) that has had to bend over backwards because something "breaks Gmail support".

Nice... this is a remix of "you are holding it wrong." Oh well....

How? If major companies keep having trouble with Gmail ... there's a chance it has something to do with their nonstandard IMAP support. If this was just Apple, that'd be one thing. But it isn't just Apple.

They haven't fixed the memory leak that uses up over 10GB RAM and it still uses heaps of CPU (around 1 thread). Disappointed with this update. They may have improved things a little but not as much as they should have.

Who are you kidding? All was working fine pre-mavericks... really fine... doesnt that tell u something?

I'm not kidding anyone, I don't think ... because I'm not kidding. It worked prior to Mavericks because everything worked around their poor IMAP implementation. Now they have to screw standards again and go with Google's poor implementation.

if i'm running the first mavericks GM now and i download it through the app store and install, will it essentially update my mavericks GM1 to GM2?

anyone having an issue where messages older than 30 days don't show up in folders in Mail?

Yes--- did it on both my iMacs' and worked flawlessly without any loss of data--though, takes a while to load the current GM.

Who are you kidding? Things certainly were NOT working fine before Mavericks. After you made a bunch of settings changes that only us geeks were familiar with you could get it to work half right before Mavericks.

But still you couldn't get delete to actually mean DELETE and Archive to actually ARCHIVE into the All Mail folder like Gmail is supposed to work. And it was a mess if you tried to use it in conjunction with the web version. And if you used multiple labels, you'd get multiple downloads and other issues.

Mavericks fixed Gmail's stupid IMAP behavior but the workarounds lots of people made to make Gmail work somewhat half-right in Mountain Lion broke when Mavericks fixed Gmail's sorry excuse for an IMAP email service.

So this update is to fix the fixes people had to make to fix Gmail. I gave up on Gmail some time ago and after switching to iCloud and other email services (now using Outlook.com for custom domains and use Exchange for work email) I've been living a blissful email existence ever since.

Won't be chasing Gmail when they break something else and not sure why Apple is bothering either since they never can know when Google is going to do something else that breaks the IMAP standards and all the IMAP clients trying to support them. Google wants people using a website for email where they can stick their ads in your face and collect data on you. Email clients serve them no purpose.

Didn't fix the widely-reported issue I'm having where I can't uncheck "store drafts on server" under account settings for Gmail. After unchecking it and clicking "save", it re-checks itself a few seconds later. This is a problem because Mail creates a new draft every few seconds while composing an email with this setting, then sends them all to the trash when you send.

now if they just ...

Now if they just issue an update that brings back the 'info' tab in tunes when using Mavericks.

This forcing me to the cloud crap makes no sense to me, especially right on the heels of worldwide outrage over NSA spying.

The second Apple lets me use my own domain on iCloud...

found on another site, this can be fixed following these steps:

1) Quit Mail.app.
2) Log into Gmail in your favorite web browser.
3) Click on the gear menu and select "Settings".
4) Click on the "Labels" tab.
5) Under "System Labels", next to "Drafts", click on "show if unread" and uncheck the "Show in IMAP' box.

Now disable "Store draft messages on the server":

6) Launch Mail.app.
7) Select Mail > Preferences...
8) Click on the "Accounts" button in the toolbar.
9) Click once on the account name and then click the "Mailbox Behaviors" tab.
10) Uncheck the "Store draft messages on the server" box.
11) Close the window and opt to save your changes when prompted.

Mavericks Mail still locks up hard and requires a force-quit whenever attaching a QuickTime or replying to a message with one already attached. Thanks, Apple!

Fingers crossed this solves my problems... I care little about gmail, but I do know that all of my personal domain IMAP's have been a total shambles, admittidly 15GB of email across about 15 years.

I have been patiently force quitting at least a dozen times a day to get by.

My Macbook Air wasn't as bad I presume the SSD helped matters somehow.

Force-quitting is just going to cause corruption and make matters worse. One tip is to not have Mail store attachments locally. That reduces how much it has to juggle. Turn off "Automatically download all attachment" checkbox on the Preferences > Accounts > Advanced panel.
