Dear Lord: Please dissuade people from asking or theorizing how to force a firmware update, including but not limited to:
  • Opening the case
  • Closing the case
  • Opening and then closing the case
  • Opening the case while standing on left foot, then immediately switching feet and closing the case
  • Drinking unsweetened pomegranate juice while repeatedly opening and closing the case while standing 7.3-8.4 feet from your iPhone while it is plugged in
  • Etc.

Can AirPods update their firmware over our cellular connection yet, or do they still need to be connected to the same WiFi network as our iPhones? Considering Apple now allows iCloud backups and iOS updates over cellular, this should also be feasible, no?

When updating software, true—they will remain connected and the update will perform even (only?) with the lid closed. I guess I was speaking more generally.
I misread your response as "if possible" (to update) instead of it's possible. My bad!
And yeah I tried keeping the lid open but I don't remember succeeding that way. Usually I just use it for awhile and put it back in the case plugged in when there's an update. And that usually does the trick within half hour for me.

Heres hoping this brings back the great standby battery life I got with 4A400 on my AirPods Max. Prior to 4A400, I was losing 10-12 percent whilst in the case, over a 18-24 hour period. With 4A400 I was only losing 0-2 percent.

The update after 4A400 (and thereafter) I was back to losing 10-12 percent again.

Would e nice if Apple provided release notes.
Agree. For the past months my AirPods Pro start to disconnect and gave the message “Not Your AirPods Pro”. I followed the instructions to reset the AirPods, but the problem repeated. Apple sent me a new pair under warranty, but the problem still present. Now I'll have to wait and see if the update fix the issue, since there is no release notes

AirPods don't have Wi-Fi radios. They update via bluetooth via whatever connection the iPhone is using.

I just hope it makes my AirPod Pros work again. They've been very strange the last few weeks. They connect and disconnect constantly. Noise cancellation and Transparency mode will not stay on.
Had them checked out at a Genius Bar and everything looked okay. No idea what is going on with them.
Mine have never worked right! One week they’ll connect & stay connected just fine. Then next week, they are literal junk. A lot of times they won’t answer calls, but Start playing music instead. Or start playing music while I’m on the phone. Or swap from one ear to the other, or connect, drop, reconnect, drop, the list goes on & on 🤣

Hopefully its stops stopping my audio when using Siri on Max. AirPods Pro don’t have that problem… 2 different products with the same functionality behave differently. Very un-Apple like…
I have the same issue! Unfortunately firmware updates in the past haven’t fixed the issue for me.
I’ve been having the issue since the day I bought them (about a year ago).
Is this just the way they were designed or is it a bug only some people have with their devices?

Well that’s a first. I connected my AirPods Pro and AirPods Max to my phone, shut them both down without even connecting them to power and they both upgraded within three minutes. Normally it’s a really laborious process to get any headphones to update

Both my Pros and Max updated minutes after I'd checked to see which version was installed. Easily the most painless upgrade for both; let's hope the firmware actually improves their performance, which hasn't always been the case.

Funny enough my AirPods Pro just updated as I placed it on my Anker Maggo wireless charger never done that before cause I noticed it flash two green lights and an orange and check on it and sure enough it got updated

I’ve had issues with my Pros since I upgraded to my iPhone 13 Pro Max. Now they’re out of warranty despite the ongoing problems and they keep telling me there is no issues. 😏
