Thanks for the heads up, for those that are struggling with how to get it to update, this is what I just did after reading this article.

Unlocked iPhone, opened settings, opened the lid to the air pods pro 2, watched the air pods line pop up in settings. Tapped settings to see the current version, 6F8. Closed the lid, placed the air pods pro 2 case (with air pods in the case) on a wireless charger.

Went on with my morning, not sure how much time passed, I wasn't on my phone much but the battery is above 70%. Just came back to them, pulled them off the charger, popped the lid, checked the settings app for a version update, 7A294, good to go. Case version 70.88.0, I didn't pay attention to the previous case version.
Correlation is not causation. I did none of those things, and mine updated themselves.

So how do you have the AirPods in its charging case and connected at the same time? I can’t get it to connect while in a case?
Just have your pods in the case, and the phone they’re connected to on WiFi and in close proximity to while charging… the new version showed up for me overnight and I was prompted to set up head gestures when I went to use the pods this afternoon.

Someone mentioned earlier that using your Mac worked. Plugin your AirPods Pro to your Max, go to system settings and select software update. Wait for it to complete checking and within a few minutes the update happens.

I’ve noticed an issue with this new firmware. I keep personalized volume off, conversation awareness on along with loud noise. When I speak it lowers the music but the left pod stays in NC mode

Update: in conversation awareness of you watch the APP settings you see it switch to Transparency but now I’m getting reduced background music but I don’t hear the surrounds like before. If I put in into transparency mode it works like before.

USB-C AirPods Pro 2 here.
My case firmware version is 70.87.0.
is the Lightning case firmware version different?

I have the USB-C AirPods Pro 2 as well. My case firmware version is 70.88.0.

My headphones will never be able to function fully again because my MacBook Pro (macOS Monterey) won't get the latest update? Why are they forcing something like this at all? This is distasteful and should be punished. And if someone has an older iPhone? This is a separate product that has worked properly so far, this is artificially ageing the hardware to force the purchase of a new one.
Anyway, from what I've read online, these earphones get worse and worse every update.

They won’t stop working for you the way they always have, so you aren’t having anything taken away from you. If you happen to get a newer phone one day, you’ll get new features from these same AirPods.

I missed the most important information in my comment (probably because it's late and I already commented the problem before, somewhere else). In general, I’ve already lost the ANC function, which absolutely doesn’t work, since the last update. I can barely feel the difference between when it's off and when it's on.

But that voice isolation mode works properly or not? The most critical issue of my AirPods Pro 2 are the mics that catchup everything during outdoor calls

Then something is wrong with your particular pair of AirPods.

Placed mine on a MagSafe and within 10-15 minutes both case and AirPods were updated.

Use Open Core Legacy Patcher to install a more recent OS. I have a 2010 15” MBP running Monterey. No Metal support, it’s painfully slow due to age but it works as a job hunting machine.

Yeah, my comment was not to be used as a guide, just what worked for me. As I noted in the first line, "...for those that are struggling with how to get it to update, this is what I just did...". But, by all means, jump into snark mode, it is the internet after all.

Apologies; didn't mean to imply snark. It's just with all the theories here about what triggers an update (from the first reply on this thread0, I overreacted.
