Interesting how apple make advertisements which showcase iPhone features, whereas their competitors make advertisements attacking the iPhone.

Interesting...

Does Facetime have to connect to Apple's servers or does it go straight to the other phone from the wireless tower? If so, that would easily set it apart from those things that have to go through others servers.

Face time is kind of superfluous when you could just use skype.

"Everyday, people need to take 10 extra steps to make a video call, just because they can't figure out that most people don't have the time/knowledge/desire to take those extra steps, when they can just hit a single button on their iPhone and bam, FaceTime dude."

Doesn't sound quite a catchy now does it?

And if it was for the fact that the vast, and I mean VAST majority of people do not own / and or want an iPhone, you would have a very good point.

Everyone has their tastes and preferences sure, but I highly doubt there is a VAST majority of people who don't want to use an iPhone. I think everyone really wants an iPhone, but many people don't like the price. There is only a tiny minority of ultra-techies that would prefer an open platform like Android. There's nothing wrong with that, but make no illusion, if both Android Phones and iPhones were free, the split would be something like 5% Android and 94% iPhone (and 1% Winblows because there's always 1% of the population too stupid to know any better).

yay and the winner for the first mention of samsung is

i hate the iphone but love my ipad and facetime is great, i travel alot and facetime is so easy even my wife can use it, shes not the greatest when it comes to tech. hell she even uses the mac,

oh crap i'll have to get her one :(

Hate is a pretty stong word for a phone. You need help.

FaceTime is ZERO configuration so it is dead simple for anybody to use... and it has the highest video quality as well. Skype takes about 10 steps to install & configure, which can be extremely frustrating.

With Skype I can make phonecalls to my mothers regular phone at very low cost when I'm abroad at most hotels. With Facetime this is simple impossible.

And yes, Skype requires some configuration, but on a level that if you can't figure that one out yourself you should seriously ask yourself if a computers or any gadget would be the thing for you to start with. It's that easy, a four years old can do it.

Not to mention that its interface is overwhelming & confusing for newbies. FaceTime is absolutely simple as can be... no configuration, no setup, nothing. Just make a call.

Not when the other person has no facetime. You make it sound like Vulcan logic. But seriously, for most people, including newbies, a word from their relatives is all that's being ask for. If you don't have facetime then making "just a call" is a pain.

And let's not forget that the iPhone was the very first phone to offer native videochats, so Apple gets the credit for kickstarting the whole mobile videochat revolution with FaceTime.

This is simply not true.

I don't even know if any phones had a front facing camera before Apple invented FaceTime.

I'm talking with my mom on the phone, I want to talk to her via FaceTime, just click the FaceTime button on my phone and she clicks the accept button on her phone. SIMPLE.

Skype is more difficult with launching apps, entering usernames and passwords, and typing in each others skype ids, connection issues, and doing this all while you can't talk to the person you're trying to skype.

A phone should not be a 'computer' that is tough to deal with. It should be easy. I don't think Android fans understand this. I can work with both Skype and FaceTime, and I understand completely that Skype is more difficult and can cause more problems. If I had my choice, I'd use FaceTime.

Are you still using a stick-shift car because of the full control you get? Lots of people use automatic, not because they don't understand how to stick-shift, but because it's easier, and the ease of use is worth the minor features like being able to accelerate faster.

I've had the opportunity to test FaceTime and Skype side-by-side when I call home from overseas. Most of the time I'm calling from 3G cellular networks or hotel wifi spots. In every case Facetime's audio/video quality absolutely blows away Skype (not to mention Skype drains battery more rapidly). This is probably due to the fact that a h.264 codec is built into the A-series SoCs used by the iPhone/iPad. Skype on the other hand being multiplatform has to perform the coding/decoding in software which is far less efficient.

I feel like these ads are targeted more so to current iPhone users and not potential customers. I understand the significance of showcasing a feature and demonstrating a wide variety of users interacting with said feature, allowing the viewer to connect, but ONE feature?

Again, I like the ad, but I already like Apple. It just feels a bit masturbatory, no?

face time

Can you imagine how exciting and impressive FaceTime would be on a 5 inch screen?

This ad reminds me,

In the early '90's Apple was making ads saying they are #1 PC maker and more people use Mac's every day then any other PC.

Deja vu?

I would be really impressed and also surprised if Apple followed through on the promise it made 3 years ago to get FaceTime ratified as an open-standard.

Right now, it's another lock-in service.

Still waiting for Facetime to be open platform. Like they promised.

Got teary
remembered it's not cross platform
back to using Skype.

I can only imagine the political wrangling that goes on within these standards bodies.

You don't need to get hysterical about this. I'm fine with that, if you like to call your mother using facetime then that's okay -of course-. Just stating that when your mother doesn't have an iPhone, or any device running OSX or iOS on it making facetime calls isn't that 'simple' that's all, and it won't get much more simple when using caps lock ;)

ISkype is more difficult with launching apps,

Not the skype I'm using. I start it up, press my mothers name and it makes a call. Can't be more easy.

entering usernames and passwords, and typing in each others skype ids, connection issues, and doing this all while you can't talk to the person you're trying to skype.

It's clear to me that you're no skype user. The skype ids are allready within my list. I don't need to 'search' for people. They are allready there. Like Facetime, you do need to make one list at the beginning. There is no phone out there that can guess what your mothers number would be. This requires a one time edit session, just like the iPhone requires. I know, because I'm using iPhone myself. It collects the "id's" from the adress book for instance, but that's empty as well at the beginning.

A phone should not be a 'computer' that is tough to deal with.

True, I'm just stating Skype is not difficult to deal with. Well maybe it is when your 85+ or age 10 and younger. But even my mother, who isn't a tech nerd at all can handle Skype.

It should be easy. I don't think Android fans understand this.

Wouldn't know. I'm no android fan, using iPhone myself so wrong guess there. But I forgive you for this. ;)

It's also very childish to have this endless "debate" about android versus iPhones and the other way around. Skype is cross platform to start with, so it simply doesn't add up with your so called "arguments".

I can work with both Skype and FaceTime, and I understand completely that Skype is more difficult and can cause more problems. If I had my choice, I'd use FaceTime.

You make it sound like Facetime is so incredible more easy then Skype while I know many elder people using Skype on daily basis that have no issues with Skype what so ever. Maybe you find Skype difficult to use and that's fine with me, but don't make a Apple commercial out of it.

Are you still using a stick-shift car because of the full control you get? Lots of people use automatic, not because they don't understand how to stick-shift, but because it's easier, and the ease of use is worth the minor features like being able to accelerate faster.

Yeah and others use chauffeurs to drive from a to b, even more convenient. That kind of arguments are called sophism and are hardly on-topic. Yes Facetime is handy, never stated otherwise. Just pointing out that Facetime is Apple only for Apple users. Nice to use among all of your Apple fans but not usable when other friends don't have an Apple device and it might be shock for you but there are many out there walking around with other brand smartphones. That's all I'm stating.

this is the ad that apple should have used to introduce the world to FaceTime, not those bizarre celebrity endorsements. i guess they had to build the userbase first before they could proclaim it's the most used phone on earth.

so tired of Apple and its ads/commercials :(

too many and all the time...

Maybe try spending a little less time on the couch watching t.v.?

Facetime works on later iPads and Macs running later versions of OS X.

Regardless, not everyone one the world needs to be on facetime for it to be a useful utility. Just as long as the people you care to video chat with are on facetime, then it is fine.
