12W wouldn't be so good for them though, would it?

You're thinking of how batteries and chargers used to work back in the days of NiCD and NiMH. Without going into too much detail, modern devices such as Apple's control how much wattage, amperage, and voltage go into them.

You could plug them into the 96w MBP 16 charger if you wanted.

I would love to see the release notes about what was fixed, is that to much to ask?

No, not at all. Any tweaks made for improvements and/or stability would be very helpful to know if something has been addressed that was previously reported. Apple _should_ be more transparent here.

I've seen so many posts of people on here using the fast charger and claiming that their battery wore out too quickly. Guess they were incorrect...

Still stuck with the other problem: Apple's ridiculous insistence that updates go through wifi only. I pay for the data, NOT Apple. Enough of the idiocy, it's almost 2020!

Went to the break room and hid my phone for about 10 minutes. Update complete!

So we have new firmware that we don't know what it does with no way to install it aside from just waiting - brilliant!

Mine just updated. No change to fit test results.

Could be placebo effect, but I would swear that noise cancellation is making my HVAC background noise even quieter than before. Could be imagining it.

Yup. It’s all about the voltage anyway. A 5V charger is still a 5V charger, whether it’s a 5w or 200w. USB PD (and all the other rapid charge standards) fall back to 5V if they aren’t sure.
One thing to remember is not to use cheap ass no brand Chinese chargers as their voltage regulation is usually lacking. Use a reputable brand!

I mean, there is science to that. When I used to race r/c monster trucks, I'd deliberately charge at a half amp slower than my fellow racers. I still had my truck topped off between heats (my battery packs were permanently mounted in my chassis), but my packs had just a little bit of an extra punch to them compared to everyone else.

Heck, I used to use an iPad wall wart as my main charger in the 5S through 7 Plus days.

But again, that's apples to oranges.

Apple might not admit it, but they've at least implemented a version of the USB Consortium's Power Delivery standard, where the device (iPhone or AirPod charger) negotiates a charging rate with the wall wart itself, and it only accepts a charging rate that it's programmed to handle. There's more on those tiny circuit boards than just garden variety resistors and capacitors, after all.

If this were reddit, I'd give you at least silver over this statement. I've literally confiscated chargers and cables from my parents so that they don't burn their house down and replaced them with Anker chargers and cables, lol. After explaining it a bit to my dad, he gets it as he's a union electrician. He just didn't know there was so much going on in the ends of those Lightning cables.

They were. I’ve only ever used the fast charger since it was available and the capacity dropped 5% over a year. And that’s charging nightly. I guess if you charge 14 times a day it might wear out quicker.

Now mine just disconnected from my phone and the left bud is making a static crackling noise. LOL. Not too promising 🤪

How the hell do you upgrade these things - really not simple...

Here’s what’s worked for me the last two times (with AirPods Pro):
Simply duplicate the procedure in this article for checking the existing firmware, and then close the case and place on a charger (wired or wireless). Wait for 10-15 minutes.
When I’ve done this, they upgraded both times within that 10-15 minute window.
Apple, it seems, designed the firmware upgrade to happen automatically and transparently when the AirPods are being charged, are in range of your iPhone, and have recently been connected. So, if you’re using them at night, and then put them in their case and charge the case, it’ll upgrade soon. You can kind of “force” this by opening the case, waking up your phone, waiting for them to connect (when you see the pop up window with charge info), and then closing the case and plugging it in to a charger (or set it on a charge mat, if compatible with wireless charging).
Hope that helps!

Thanks. It’s not just that end that can be dangerous with those chargers, they’d so badly made that the chunk of plastic connected to the live part can stay in the socket whilst you pull the rest out. The next person that comes along gets a belt from it.
