So we need a Lightning to Lightning cable?! Who has one of those?!

...wut?

Thanks. It’s not just that end that can be dangerous with those chargers, they’d so badly made that the chunk of plastic connected to the live part can stay in the socket whilst you pull the rest out. The next person that comes along gets a belt from it.

Oh no, I was referring to the circuitry and controller chips in the plastic sheathing in the cables, specifically. But that's also an excellent point.

Yup. It’s all about the voltage anyway. A 5V charger is still a 5V charger, whether it’s a 5w or 200w. USB PD (and all the other rapid charge standards) fall back to 5V if they aren’t sure.
One thing to remember is not to use cheap ass no brand Chinese chargers as their voltage regulation is usually lacking. Use a reputable brand!
Only use OEM chargers. Don't trust the cheap ones.

Yup, did the Settings > General > About > AirPods thing, put buds in charger, plugged in charger (not Qi), left it all there, started reading this thread, got thru first page and then noticed the iPhone screen went back to the About page automatically. We'll see what happens in a few minutes.

Yeah, I know. Remember the clearance between the high voltage and low voltage side too. A lot of these dodgy chargers have the potential to fry you as well as your kit.
And back on topic, I’m still waiting for my update.

H3LL5P4WN -> I thought you needed to connect your AirPods TO your iPhone...
Your AirPods need to be plugged in, as in charging.
The case needs to be open so that it will connect to your phone (at least that's how I did it).
Phone needs to be connected to wifi as Apple won't allow updates through cellular.
And lastly, you wait. It can take anywhere between 5-15 minutes.

Did this but no wifi and it updated. I think its such a small update they allow it over cellular.

I legit chuckled. Thanks for that. No no, just get your AirPods into their case, pair them to your iPhone or iPad (even through Control Center), and stick em on a charger.

I've got OEM, Anker, Nimble, and Hard Cider Labs chargers. All work fine (though my HCL is more finicky than it should be), and I trust them not to burn my place down.

Updated Airpods 2 here. At first, I was confused 'cos I didn't see the "Airpods" label in the "General- Information" screen but then I restarted my iPhone 8 and voila: Airpods information is now accessible on my phone and 2C54 is the version :)

:)

Not a physical connection to the phone, with a cable. “Connect” to the phone wirelessly... essentially by activating the AirPods (while the phone is awake, open the AirPods case, holding it next to the phone. In a few seconds, a pop up screen will appear displaying the AirPods charging info. They are now “connected”. At this point, you can go into Settings->About and view the Firmware information. Plug the AirPods case into a charger at this point, wait for several minutes, and it should upgrade the firmware)

Oh no I’m not. I’ll test it tomorrow - it’s too quiet in here.
I flushed the toilet and turned the taps on whilst I was wearing them. Seems ok, but the ANC still struggles with higher frequencies. I’d like to see that fixed, but it could be a limitation of processing power.

Agreed to a point. It’s the ultra cheap no name crap that claims to support specific standards that you really should avoid. They make them cheap by omitting components (for filtering and regulation generally), reducing quality of output and reducing safety.
The established 3rd party brands - anker, aukey etc are generally reliable and have a reputation to keep.

Hopefully this brings back the original anc. ANC has been weak since the 2b588.
There’s a huge topic on the Apple discussion community. How come nobody is talking about it?
ANC performances are poor there’s just a little difference between anc off and on And apparently this was changed with that Firmware.

I'm in an office with constantly running HVAC, etc. I paused my music and swapped between ANC and Transparency, and the difference was pretty noticeable.

Had no one mentioned this, I probably would have never realized that the prior firmware wasn't 'isolating' me the way the launch firmware did. This new firmware is doing the job for me again.

Edit: I should also note that I can't get a good seal even with the large eartips due to my earhole shapes and sizes.

maybe the firmware turns on the real microphone instead of the pretend microphone currently being used across the iPod line?

Mine updated and it appears to be slightly better than 2b588 but ear fit test still not passing a good fit. Not sure why they have to play this game.
