I actually have a pretty reliable way to update them, it works 90% of the time, at least for my Pro 1s;

open the case, put one AirPod in your ear, listen for about a minute or so, then they should update. I really wish Apple would make a "Check for update" button on your AirPods Bluetooth page.
Are there any other conditions? For example:

1. Connect iPhone to power.
2. Connect AirPods case to power.
3. Open case and remove ONE AirPod. Do NOT close case.
4. Stick AirPod in ear.
5. Play music for a few minutes.
6. Check to see if firmware is updated.

I tried your steps as written with no success, hence my question. Thanks!

My today’s update recipe:

1) with neither iPhone nor AirPod case plugged into charging, open the AP case and connect at least one AP to your iPhone. No need to listen to anything, just make sure it is connected.

2) Now put that AP back into its charging case and plug the case in to charge in the same space as your iPhone.

You can use your iPhone as usual while both APs sit in their closed charging case and charging.

Try using the AP after about 15 minutes and they should have updated by then.

It’s not that difficult, people.

Open the charging case lid, leave in the case, and set next to the iPhone it is paired with overnight. Make sure it says connected under BT settings.

“It just works!” -SJ

i tried that so many times, case opened but i read apple forum said its not need to be open and still its not updated (i leaved it overnight but still nothing). dont know what im doing wrong. also tried different cables but still same issue.

It seems those who write articles n AirPods don't seem to ever know this. some authors even have said there is "no way" to check firmware from a MAC. LOL

So to check from a Mac:

1. alt-click bluetooth icon on menu bar, or
2. In settings bluetooth click "I" on AirPods under my devices, or
3. under system information, hardware, bluetooth. look for it, it is right there

so yah., "no way" to find it. LOL

Spatialized Stereo is still broken in the new betas
Using the AirPods Pro 2 with 5E135 firmware, I can't get Spatial Audio to work at all.

It's been working just fine for me on my AirPods Max and Pro 2 -- but then just yesterday I started having issues with it.

until I can automatically turn on transparency when I pause it’s not good enough.
This is a great idea. On the Max, you can use two fingers to simultaneously press down on the volume/pause knob and the ANC button. But yeah, transparency-on-pause would be a cool feature.

I followed the advice from ray or about taking my APM off “find my”. I was having similar problems especially the decline in standby but also loosing some 30 Percent per 2-3 hours of viewing both not what I was expecting. Well now with the find my disabled I watched for nearly 3 hours and was down only 3 percent for that time. I am now expecting that 10-15 percent in 24 hour drop will also go away it appears that the APM uses too much power when “find my” is enabled at least upon this limited experiment based on what raynor said.

Of course I also upgraded the firmware so maybe that helped as well but we shall see

I also found info on what happens when “Find My” is turned off here:

“Overnight battery drain solution - turn off FindMy
I haven’t seen this posted before, so I thought I’d share:
As many others have reported, the AirPods Max loses some battery overnight before going to deep sleep, even while in the smart case. I’ve seen people report up to 12%. Personally, I see around 8-9%.
This is caused by the FindMy feature. I tried turning it off and now I see around 1% overnight drain! So if you don’t need the FindMy feature, try turning it off.
You find it under Settings-Bluetooth-AirPods Max (while it is connected)
Update: It’s also worth noting that even if you turn off the feature, you’ll still be able to track where you last used the headphones. As far as I can tell, turning it off just disables tracking while in the case (and not plugged in).
Update 2: Ok, so after some testing and reading the replies here, it seems that it is slightly inconsistent. From my own testing, the battery drain each night has been 0-1%, with the exception of the first time I tried it and once a couple of nights ago. So to recap:

  • Turn off FindMy at Settings-Bluetooth-AirPods Max (while it is connected)
  • Make sure the AirPods are in the smart case (this is important!)
  • If after a few nights it is still having "normal" battery drain, try a reboot or even a factory reset (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT211904) Then turn off FindMy again if it is on again.”
Gonna reply to my post from last night since it has the details of turning off the “Find My” on my APM. This am I looked at it this morning. It was down to 97 percent after 2-3 hours last night (after firmware and turning of “Find My” which I have no idea how much power it uses). This morning it was down to 93% in the case supposedly low power mode. Thats another 4% drop just sitting overnight not using and supposed in almost sleep lowest power mode?

I was seeing though around 8-10 % drop in case overnight before I knew to turn off the “Find My” so this seems an improvement. Will see what transpires this week.

Before this firmware and the turning off of “Find My” I was experiencing around 30% drop each evening from 2-3 hours of use. Meaning that after approximately 9 hours of use plus the overnight drop sleeping in case I was seeing about half the supposed 20 plus hours the APM is supposed to do. I did read in first year with early firmware though folks were seeing this half of 20 hours or worse in the first year. Hopefully that was fixed for all and there are not some with battery/use issues? We shall see I love the sound and features but the charging issues do make me wonder a bit?

There's probably a patent blocking that. Just like everything else.
(Sony has the auto-transparency when you talk, but I've turned that off)

I doubt it can be fixed in firmware, but I wish the APP2s handled the sound of wind as well as the original APPs.

When it's windy outdoors, I simply am unable to use them. The ANC microphones actually increase the wind noise.

While not officially posted by Apple, I’ve had to exchange my APP1s a couple times (first the right then the left) and had problems getting it paired with the case. The key step if things aren’t updating is to try and play something for 20 seconds. I did manage to screenshot one of my conversations with Apple Support and they mentioned that. Hopefully that might help someone who is having trouble updating

They really need to add an opt out or allow us to select to go back to an old one.

My Pro's have worked great for over 2 years. The last firmware update introduced a terrible crackling sound in one of them. I'm past Applecare+ to fix them. I found there is a known issue with some manufactured before a certain date (includes mine) and they will replace for free, but you had to have taken them into Apple with in 2 years of purchase which has passed for me.

They basically bricked my one Airpod Pro and I'm at their mercy to see if this firmware fixes it or a future one does. Great for their sales numbers, but terrible for the environment.

I had my original AirPod Pros replaced twice for free because of crackling issues. They are currently working fine now, and the AirPod Pro 2nd gen I have has no issues at all.
