Surprisingly 1.33 = 133 FSB and 1.42 = 142 FSB !! i never knew apple could be this ridiculous!! give people a break! apple probably is the only company that puts in an exact piece of hardware in both the systems but cripple one to differentiate a product! boooo

Someone find out where the FSB is configured on the new iBooks and post a guide on how to mod it! I bet the only difference between the two processors is the FSB, and the 12" can probably get up to 1.42GHz as well, maybe even higher. If the multiplier can also be changed that'd be great - 166MHz x 9 :p

This sucks.

Ok, so here's my take. Apple introduced the iBook 500 in May 2001. That was over 4 full years ago. Now, four years later, we're still stuck with exactly the same form-factor except for the keyboard change/slight-hue change. This is just wrong.

Yes, Apple never said they'd put widescreens in the iBook line, but it only makes sense and is what Apple should've done. The Intel news was bad news and I think what's happening right now is that people are afraid to buy anything that is G4 for the next 11 months. This is even more reason to have wowed the hell out of us now, to keep us here.

Apple's done it before , where they introduced something new just to hold people off ..... the "yikes!" g4 . They couldn't get enough AGP g4s out, so they did that. I think the new form factor should've come out now, and then put intels in there later.

Oh, and if they slap "intel inside" or put celerons in ibooks, I'm gonna puke.

Anyway, I'm very disappointed. It's a valid rant to complain that PCs get way better displays... they've been upgraded in the last four years. But for us, 1024x768 is still standard on BOTH ibooks.

The gap between Microsoft and Apple is closing. I'm started to feel shame for speaking so much Apple to anyone.

X-Brite aren't the only ones...they're are a lot of high glare ones out there now. But obviously you are the only one who knows exactly which ones you were looking at.
I should have clarified. When looking at newer x86 laptops that don't use high glare screens (which I don't like either) I notice that the iBook (and PowerBook) screens look dull. Bottom line, I was hoping for something brighter and for some more resolution as well. It does make sense however, to save these types of upgrades for the new x86 line that we should see next year.

I'm selling mine... Are you looking for a 12"er with SD?
Yes, but unless you can give it to me for less than $1,300 I will not accept. The deals Apple are running currently give me a laptop like that for $1,250 since I want that mini and printer.

They better update the Powerbook. The 12" ibook is now exactly the same except for the processor. Personally, I think they should've saved SMS for the pro line. Still, it doesn't justify the 50% price difference.

Are you kidding? perhaps you need some glasses.

this should be an end to the "new iBooks next tuesday?!" threads....for about a week

Not necessarily. There's always one or two people going: "Don't worry. Apple will release the really new iBooks in another month at <some future expo>."

It happens every update.

Happy with 3 week old purchase

Phew! It's 3 weeks since I bought my iBook and all along I thought I had made the right choice in buying it then, rather than waiting "one more Tuesday". Well, that Tuesday is here and the updates don't leave me any less happy for having plunked down my money on the "9-month old" iBook.

Seriously, it's a great little laptop and after considering going Dell, I stuck with the iBook to complement my G5 iMac. This update would make me happy if I were buying a new laptop today. But not a big enough update (was looking for a 64MB v-card) to make me regret buying early.

I am very disappointed with the upgrade. Why do apple always make it seem a big deal when they have barely changed anything, it's so frustrating that they know they have us over a barrell.

Apple didn't really make a big deal over this update, this rotten site did with all the bunk and garbage going around about Widescreen iBooks and turbocharged minis. Nothing about digitimes should ever be posted here again.

Well, they're not exactly the same, the PowerBook is still better. Although really I think the new iBooks are a great deal. Nice to see the elimination of a $1499 model.

Didn't have time to read all of the posts in this thread, but did any of the other international members notice a price increase for the iBooks? In Sweden the 12" iBooks went up by about 800 SEK (or a bit more than 100 USD!)!! :( Not a very great update for us...

So there is now a superdrive mini (which you could already order before btw). And all models have 512mb ram, but I believe that was already added someway midterm as a minor change. So what's new?

Judging on the CPU speed of the new iBook of 1.42Ghz I deduce that the FSB is now 166mhz. Yes! (not being sinical, in case you are in doubt)

No, it's a bit faster 142MHz and the RAM is now PC3200 (333MHz). I noticed it doesn't include a double-layer capable SuperDrive.

Nice to finally see the iBook's updated-widescreen would have probably made them even closer to the PBG4.

The only thing that is clearly sub-par about the iBook is the processor (more precisely, the front side bus), which Apple can do very little about. Motorola decides what they do and do not want to offer in the G4, and the only thing Apple can do if they don't like is something really extreme like switching to Intel. Oh, wait, that's what they're doing...

Freescale (not Motorola BTW) Does offer G4 with 200Mhz bus and 1MB of L2-cache. Both those things would help the FSB-starvation quite nicely, and the CPU is pin-compatible with the current G4. It's up to Apple to use it or not. And they chose not to use it. So blame Apple. There's a better CPU waiting to be used, and they choose not to use it.

This update is a joke! They didn't up the graphics memory, the HD barely got an increase in size, superdrive is STILL not an option on the 12" model and the CPU update was minimal. My job would really prefer I use a Dell but if this update was a good one I was going to get an iBook anyways.... looks like the Dell 700m it is.... sigh.

I am not sure what the negative reaction is for. This is the IBOOK, not the Powerbook. The fact that a student can get a good quality Mac laptop with decent specs and a 14 inch screen for $1299 is GREAT. If you want a top-of-the-line laptop with more capabilities stop bit**ing and get the Powerbook.

A consequence of the exchange rate, I would guess. The past few Mac updates have come with additional price drops in Europe due to the weak dollar, now finally the dollar is strengthening a little (for example, this morning's quote is $1.74 to the GBP, having been around $1.90 for a long time), so Apple has to increase its costs to compensate. I think...

I just find it very funny that people talk about how great of a value the iBook is when far better laptops can be had for far less money. OS X is great and all but that does not mean you should cripple yourself with a laptop with subpar graphics, low resolution and a very old processor when so much better can be had... just my opinion.

wow, these are really unexpected...so frickin SLOW. the 14" has a 90 MHz speed increase...that's only 10 MHz a month since the last iBooks. oh well, they suck, but i'm still gonna order one :)

I thought the 14" used to be £999 in the UK and it's now £899. Can anyone confirm if that's right? Could have been £899 before but not sure.

Come on people, I know that bashing new Apple products is an Olympic sport here but what did you expect? There is little wiggle room to update the iBooks without totally killing PowerBook sales. Given that, they did OK in my book, er, iBook.

Well after first reading the Mini release, saying various obscenities for a .05 speed bump and nothing else, then realizing it was the Mini release.

Now the thing I am pissed off about is that the graphics is only 32MB. Everything else I could live with.

The baseline ibooks are better than my Powerbook. I want a new Powerbook!

(Intel)

In italy the mini now starts at 539€, before the upgrade was 499... +256mb for 40€... LOL! Really funny upgrade.

iBook 12 before the upgrade was 999, now 1049.

Yes, up by 40 euros in Finland. But take a close look at the 14" now, if you don't need DVD-burning features. Price difference between those models with 12" book upped to 60 gigs (14" standard) hd is a mere 140 euros! Bigger screen & faster processor for that money seems like a deal for me. I might be getting 14" now, because I think 12" would hurt my eyes on a long run.

price changed too..

and on a sidenote it's interesting, that the price in europe increased..
now it's 1049 euro instead of the 999 euro before in austria (rest of europe has gone to 1029 euro)
