While this is true... I'm glad they haven't taken a step backward.
the 1GB of GDDR5 will help too.
It's an ever slight improvement. The RV800 only shines against older cards when you get past 800 shaders. It's a little disappointing to need 1440 shaders to beat the venerable HD 4890.

There's a reason I waited for the GTX 460.

This is a great update, finally the imac has better hardware than the macbook! That low end configuration looks really nice!

Obsolete? I'm using a 2.33Ghz C2D Macbook Pro from 2006 as my primary computer and I still don't see a compelling reason to upgrade to these newer machines. They simply haven't gotten all that much faster since then.

Your iMac is still perfectly usable and shouldn't really be far behind the new computers at all.

Thanks for the reassurance.

You're welcome. I really wish it wasn't true. 4 years is a long time in computer-world, but there really hasn't been a whole lot of improvement since then.

In my situation the best option was to hold onto my old Mac (which I use for my general browsing, iTunes, etc) and build a PC for gaming and audio/video intensive tasks. This way I get the best of both worlds. The Mac really excels at things that don't require a lot of power and my pc can blow through the rest.

In a little over a year I have watched my once brand-new iMac turn obsolete, so many changes in so little time, that is technology.

Your 1-year old iMac won't be obsolete for many years. The SSD update today was nice, but imagine what features iMacs will have in 3-4 years when it's time to replace your iMac. I run a design business from a 2007 iMac and have no urge to upgrade - maybe in a year or two. My first computer was the Coleco Adam, now THAT's obsolete!

Does this t-shirt come in turtleneck?

I'm pretty sure the latest quad and hex cores with HT would absolutely smash your 2.33 c2d. Not sure what you're talking about exactly.

I'm sorry. I wasn't aware that the Macbook Pros came with quad and hex cores. Please direct me to the nearest Apple Store where I might acquire one of these magical beasts...

lol

What I meant is that the speed difference between similar models has not really changed all that much over the last 4 years (eg my 2.33 Macbook Pro is not really all that much slower than the contemporary model at the same pricepoint). I know that a lot of people "need" to be at the bleeding edge, but the small speed improvement doesn't really justify an upgrade and the newer model doesn't really have any new features. In fact, my Macbook Pro actually has additional features beyond what the new model offers (expansion slot and firewire 400). The same is true of every Mac computer right now. I'll upgrade when they actually add additional features and there is a more appreciable speed improvement.

To call or not to call

So I'm 29 days into owning my i7 27" iMac. Should I call and see if :apple: has a heart and will let me swap for the new one or just let it go? I have been contemplating all day whether or not it is worth the hassle....

The entire Mobility HD 5600/5700 line is based off of 400 shader Redwood cores (Desktop HD 5650/5670)

The Mobility HD 5850/5870 are based on Juniper (Desktop 5770).

We'll need to see what the new iMac has but I wouldn't be surprised if it was a 400 shader Mobility HD 5770 (desktop HD 5670 power) or worse.

In previous ATI generations the mobile versions did get you the proper desktop core at lower clocks instead of the next one down.

Pardon my ignorance, but where does the 256mb HD 4670 stack up against these? Is it really an equally-powerful but less energy-efficient version, or is it anemic? I only intend to tax it on (what I understand to be) midrange games like Portal 2, Half-Life 2, Starcraft 2, Borderlands and Fallout 3. Also, World Of Goo, but that runs just fine on my old Pentium M 1.5, thank you very much.

I so want a new iMac,I'm so happy Apple put decent processors and ATI cards in the iMacs, finally getting rid of C2D's,can't wait for the next MBP refresh,I want a 13" MBP with an i3!!and a dedicated graphics memory ATI card!

I'd avoid any 256 MB video card like the plague.

Yeah I know cuz liek 256MB vRAM is SOOOOO 2007.

But yar seriously it is! I'm not joking I agree completely really. Heck, 512 MB is soooo 2008. I know it sucks but its true!

what kind of upgrade is this?

no usb 3? just some graphic card changes, which no one will be ever notice. Gone are the days where an update means something. I feel terrible, i cannot recommend the imac for my friend at this state.

Is your iMac to slow? If not do you want to spend $200 more for something you do not need? To get a GPU that is not much better than you have
http://www.hwcompare.com/graphics/compare.php?c=Radeon-HD-4850-512MB-vs-Radeon-HD-5750-1024MB-1GB-

i.m.o. you still have a beast of an computer......

I ordered my iMac last week. :apple: told me i can change it for a new one but have to pay the $200.- more.... for me it is not worth the money and hassle.

So is the Intel Quad Core i5 clocked at 2.8GHz better than the Intel Core i5 at 3.60GHz? I ask because with the same specs (other than the processor) the 3.60GHz iMac is £30 more.

kinda sad

Saddens me that they didn't put USB 3.0 in it. When buying this I'm going for the i7 and upgrading with my own SSD HD an additional 4GB of RAM. For me that's gonna be enough for MANY years to come, and that's why lack of newer standards like USB 3.0 concerns me. But I guess I'll have to stay at USB 2.0 for a while.

edit:
One FireWire 800 port; 7 watts
Four USB 2.0 ports

Anybody know if the USB-ports supports iPad-charging or are the too low-powered?

They've done speedbumps basically exactly like this many, many times in the past; why the shock? They won't put USB3 in 'til Intel has their own chipset with it.
