So yea, thats the part I havent figured out yet, are they simply overclocking the Santa Rosa chipset to a 1066MHz FSB, or did they get the Montevina chipset ahead of everyone else?

I read it as they were going to update to 4GB of 800 and wanted to use the sticks of 1GB RAM from the new iMac in an older Mac.

I'd like to know thought as i've got 4GB of 667 RAM sitting here which I bought in December (for the MacWorld update that never came!). I would like to use that 4GB in the top spec iMac I've just ordered! :D

Looking at iMac specs page it sounds like it needs to be 800 not 667 for the new versions!
For best performance it should be 800. But the system will run with 667. The original question of using 800 in a 667 system was answered with a I wouldn't do it. Running the 800's at 667 may use timing the 800 may not be able to handle.

Since I have never heard of anyone overclocking the bus speed (and memory speed) in an EFI based system (specifically laptop) it is pretty safe to say it is Cantiga (Montevina).

Does anyone know if there is still a quality difference between the 20 and the 24 inch screens on the new iMacs?
The previous models had tn displays on the smaller screens that weren't able to reproduce the full color range of the better s-ips displays on the 24 inch models.
Is this still the case?

Hey, don't drag me into this. I was just fixing your misunderstanding of the original post.

But, since you did drag me into this, I don't think a $100 price drop on the mini would be too unreasonable. Apple maintains markup parity across all of their products, whereas many companies markup their low end systems a smaller percentage than their high end systems.

Well then, it's obvious you haven't priced the exact same components or the a ready-built system with the exact same specs as the mini.

If you can quote a source of components or a ready-built (socket m or p) system with the same specs as the mini, and is $100 less than the mini, please let me know.

If you're so intent on defending Apple's pricing, then you justify the current pricing. Everyone (except you, apparantly) knows the MacMini, with its current components, is overpriced.

That's completely wrong. The money is an advance on a tax break that takes effect next year. You won't be taxed on it (not that I think that justifies this sleazy move on the part of the Republicans to win everyone over with a ridiculous cash hand-out.)

Inkswamp is absolutely correct. I am astounded when people post ignorant things on here. For God's sake, at least google something before you come on here and call others "stupid" when in fact your statements speak pretty strongly about yourself.

HDMI Connection

Is there a way to add an HDMI Connection to the iMac?

For example,
Some Monitors come with HDMI Inputs - would I able to use that to import HDV video to the New iMac?

I'm not defending Apple. I'm defending the real world and sanity.

"Everyone knows" doesn't prove anything. Again, post a link to a (real world) source of something with the same components that is actually for sale (in the real world.)

No, YOU post a link. I'm not going to argue with you about this anymore. You are the only one here saying the current MacMini is priced correctly. I've been in IT and computer hardware for more than 25 years. The components on the MacMini are more than 6 months (some more than 1 year) old. It's called depreciation and you can learn about it in school... Later! :D

Regardless, your logic is flawed, but I assume you don't have a good understanding re: computer hardware.

You think Apple should sell a the minis for $200? People would buy them just to gut and resell them on the open market if Apple was stupid enough to sell below their cost.

I didn't say Apple should sell the Minis for $200. I said they should drop the price of the current models about $200. That would bring them more in line with what they are actually worth.

Neophytes are funny.

these ARE your iMacs for christmas.

Similar to the G5 White iMac, this model is a filler and the model that will be released in Aug-Oct timeframe for Christmas will have some integrated features, similar to the iSight and Remote. (for those who remember some history). :)

that update happened because apple switched from PowerPC chips to Core chips... with all that SHOULD be coming out this year (new ACDs, Montevina Notebooks, 3G iPhone, and surely more), and with what seems to be early exclusivity of the Montevina platform in these newly released iMacs, i highly doubt apple is going to update the iMac again until MacWorld '09...

Interesting.... I got my iMac a month or so ago... because knowing me... I couldn't wait :D This update is nothing to be afraid of.... if you have one of the previous iMacs, it's ok people.... it won't randomly blow up;)... be happy with what you have.... I am :)

So a monday new product release huh??? And why do they still include the Apple remote with the iMac but rip off the laptop people who would probably use it more with presentations??? Other than that looks pretty good!

20" vs 24" for gaming

I'll wait for benchmarks but any opinions based on the specs given which would run most games faster.

High end 20" w/ ATI 2600 at 1680x1050

or

High end 24" w/ 8800gs at 1920x1200

Really wondering if at same quality settings the higher resolution of the 24" model would reduce frame rate enough to counter the actual benefit of the better GPU. I am not one to run with all the visual stuff maxed, I prefer to have the graphics smooth so consistent FPS is more important than a higher resolution. I don't want to spend the extra $700 if my FPS are about equivalent since I will probably upgrade the unit with a replacement in two years anyways.

Thanks for any help.

Sigh. Can't we all just get along? Why is it that you are allowed to state your opinion as fact without posting any evidence to back it up, yet you eviscerate anyone else who tries to do the same?

That is a plausible answer - most of the stuff I read about what is keeping Montevina from being released is the graphics portion of the chipset. And since the iMac doesn't use the integrated graphics portion, Apple could have got their lots earlier.

This would also explain why they're in the iMac first, then the MBP next possibly and then the MB would be last (or at the same time as the MBP if they push the launch to the end of May or beginning of June).

hey what a ripoff, so everyone but laptop users get a remote now?
no matte screen?
no thanks

Agreed! I only consider Mac Mini's overpriced if you look at them simply as an entry level machine. If you consider their small form factor, then they are most certainly not overpriced, in fact, I would argue that they are cheap!
