Though I realise it's not the best upgrade since the dawn of man, i'm glad I waited a week as I was about to order a 2.4GHz 24" iMac last week for the same money.

I'm happy, just ordered. :) Looking forward to finally ditching this PC...

Um, Apple gets unfairly compared to Dell every day of the year and as usual people only compare Dell's low end to Apple.

Unfortunately that's where the best comparisons can me made as they've made their bed in to low to mid end consumer market, albeit more a upscale and refined branch. The iMac is never going to compare very well to a premium full ATX machine.

So why not an option for the bigger screen with the 2.4?

Apple has some good products, but the lack of BTO options really annoys me some times. I hate the bundling together of unrelated features instead of just letting the user pick what they want.

Would like to get one to have as a desktop... I have a MBP, but it's starting to get slow for what I do (Final Cut, Aperture, Photoshop CS3), and having a 3 GHz processor with a 1066MHz bus would be a nice upgrade (I can't afford a Mac Pro, though).

Oh, and 24" monitor? Amazing!

A note on the price drop of the mini:
In Italy the base model was 599€, now is 499€. The Superdrive model is still at 699€. Maybe they have a lot of combo drive mini to sell before the upcoming update?

Yeah, the Government is handing out $600 to stimulate the economy. Trouble is, they hope everyone is too dumb to realize that they will be taxed on it next year, so dumb people will receive $600 from government this year, spend all of it thinking it is free money, and then next year be taxed (say 25%) on it and so owe the government $150 or so.

Personally, I hate the "stimulus payments". Just lower the tax rate for heavens sake!

Yep - not to mention that gas prices just went way up again - what a coincidence....

I'd say the top end model is a pretty hardcore update - my visa has just been caned for a 24" 3.06ghz. This computer should last me a few years I'd say..

One happy Apple camper...:D

hey what a ripoff, so everyone but laptop users get a remote now?
no matte screen?
no thanks

I can see there point in that its mainly meant for front row which is a little more useful on a desktop with a larger screen. Its not like its unheard of for front row to be used on a laptops though and that remote is mighty handy for keynote presentations.

Sigh. Can't we all just get along? Why is it that you are allowed to state your opinion as fact without posting any evidence to back it up, yet you eviscerate anyone else who tries to do the same?

I don't mean to be argumentative, however unsupported "facts" aren't "facts."

The $499 (refurb) price as the entry level cost for mini ownership should have been a rather well established "fact" within the Apple community. Other than supplying that price, I can't "prove" anything exists that's cheaper, simply because I do not know of any source, etc. If I knew of it, I would have bought it "yesterday."

Never the less, here's my "proof" -- the link to the Apple refurb mini.

Your turn...

Pity. You missed the dawn of a great company with some great products. My dad bought us an Apple IIe and I never looked back. But you are right, even about 95-03. Apple has become the new fad. At least we can say we were Mac before Mac was cool.

I think macs have only recently become cool - if you consider cool as in more people are switching. And that's only coz u can boot Windows on them - if they were still on underpowered PPC architecture no one would care.

So what happened to the "extreme" version (2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme)? I was thinking about getting the refurbished one since is drop in price. Has the extreme one had a good repoire? Do the 24 in imacs have display problems like the 20 in imacs? Also is 1GB of ram sufficient or is 2GB actually needed? One last question: Are the refurbished iMacs good or is buying brand new the way to go?

thanks for your help. This would be my first mac computer ;)

so these are the new specs and prices

20", 2.4GHz, 1GB RAM, 250GB Hard Drive, ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT 128MB. $1199
20", 2.6GHz, 2GB RAM, 320GB Hard Drive, ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO 256MB, $1499
24", 2.8GHz, 2GB RAM, 320GB Hard Drive, ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO 256MB, $1799
24", 3.06GHz, 2GB RAM, 500GB Hard Drive, NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS 512MB, $2199

does anyone remember the specs and prices before today?

Now, it started before then with the iPod. The switch to intel just made it less of a risk and Redmond's missteps didn't help either.

It got bumped up to 3ghz.

From a shareholder's point of view (which I am NOT), the switch to Intel was a great move. In a few years, who knows, Apple may switch again.

But at what point does Apple get so overextended (with iPods, iPhones, iTunes, AppStore, etc) that they slouch in the Mac R&D department?

Let's try to cut down on the misinformation

The post you quoted was wrong. The stimulus payment is an advance tax credit; you do not have to include it on your 2008 return. See post #186 for more information.
