As a proud (former) owner of an Apple IIe (Brazilian clone), an Apple IIGS, a Quadra 605, an iBook G3 and finally my iMac G5, I must admit those were classy times...

But you have to admit, the current lineup is simply awesome without straying into too many different market segments...quality is still excellent overall, and market support levels are at an all-time high...Apple IS a FAD WITH REASON, not just trendy...

Besides, I don't miss those times when I said I had a Mac and people were like: "huh"?

Yes it is nice, but a lot of old Mac users in those different product segments.

Yes. It's called "market research." Or, for a less scientific approach, they could pay an intern to roam the forums.

You think really some forums would give valid data? That's really funny. You could go to MySpace and count the number of 15 yr. old girls but I'd bet a lot of them aren't really 15... :D

Admit you're too lazy to write the letter... and move on. ;)

Honestly, with the huge increase in marketshare for apple, they would be stupid to miss the concept of offering more models as computers so they could offer more models.

yes, Apple does offer some nice computers, but they are also missing the boat with a sizable consumer base, many people want more power and upgradeablity than an imac, and less than the mac pro.

so.... im just hoping that they will start listening to the consumers.

remember 10-25% of imac userbase wouldn't be insignificant! and there are some people who would easily switch to mac. A midrange mac tower would only help apple, not hurt sales.

This post is yet more proof that PC gamers think waaayy too highly of themselves.

Here here! To piggyback:
The current low-end "new" MacMini on the Apple Store is $500 cheaper than the current low-end new MacBook.
The "current" MacMini: It's an August 2007 low-end MacBook without a display, no iSight, no keyboard, no trackpad, no 802.11n, only a Combo drive (not SuperDrive), and no lithium ion battery. All the aforementioned parts add up to much more than $500 dollars.

Oh yeah, and the new MacBook has SR Penryn. The "new" MacMini doesn't.

Overpriced.
How ya like 'dem Apples? :p

The Mini hasn't that bad when introduced, in fact, it was pretty competitive. Hard drive technology on the 3.5" has just moved a lot faster than the 2.5" side. Apple's just been too stubborn to move in a slightly different direction for a replacement.

Cheers! I ran with a small crowd in my youth that had Macs. We were the rebels and outcasts. Yes, people said "huh?", but it was O.K. with us. They are now either:
a) pulling their hair out with Vista
or
b) switchers :p

iMac long awaited. Purchased!

So I've been waiting for this update. I predicted tomorrow. Why today? I don't know. I don't care.

I bought this one:
24" 3.06GHz INTEL CORE 2 DUO (1066MHz)
4GB 800MHZ DDR2 SDRAM - 2x2GB (800MHz)
NVIDIA GEFORCE 8800 GS W/512MB
500GB SERIAL ATA DRIVE

WITH-
AppleCare
Free CANON MP470 Printer

Educational discount makes it worth it. An NH shipping for me... no sales tax!!!

Hope everyone that's been waiting with me likes the upgrade and enjoys! (I know I will!)

That's another thing that often gets kicked around online -- how "Apple isn't listening"...

Do you think Apple can read your mind?

I really wish someone would organize a letter writing campaign on the subject. (Yeah, a real letter.) But I guess it's easier to just whine and make out you're a "victim" 'cause "the man", he don't listen, etc. And yes, I'm aware of the fact that Apple doesn't want "suggestions" due to legal problems, etc. Just do it.

You seriously think apple could possibly be completely unaware that people are interested in an expandable headless machine?

And you don't think users have contacted Apple about this? The whole of the mac user community never would have thought of getting in touch with them until you gave us the idea?

It's public knowledge that apple doesn't generally listen to consumer demand. Jobs himself has admitted it - he thinks he knows what customers need/want more than they do themselves.

What people?

What do you mean, you want names or something.

I'm saying that people exist that want a budget machine. You don't dispute that?

So, it's not that it's "overpriced" it's just that it doesn't match your wants and needs. As far as the consumer being a "victim" because features "are forced" on you, I'd love to have a $2000 BMW and I bet if I could go to the factory I could put one together for that price by leaving off some the features I don't need or want. I'd rather an 8-track than the expensive factory installed sound system for example. Darn those capitalist pigs! :D

No, it IS overpriced for what many people want AND it doesn't match the wants and needs of most buyers in that price range.

Sure, for someone who absolutely needs a tiny machine, it's not that bad a deal. But way more people just want a decent machine at a decent price, but the mini is all that apple offers in that price range. For users who don't care about "mini", the mini is overpriced.

And I'm not sure why you have "victim" in quotes, I never used that term. And I'm not sure why you have "forced" in quotes either, if you want the fastest CPU, you are forced to get the bigger screen, HD, and more ram with it, aren't you?

Other computer companies give customers more choices of combinations of features, letting them get exactly what they want and leave out unnecessary things to save money. Apple doesn't do BTO as well as others. Seems like a legitimate complaint to me, what's your problem with it (other than simply wanting to bring up silly comparisons involving 8 tracks that aren't remotely analagous)?

What people?
You'd be surprised how many utilitarian Mac users there are. Some of us are here for the operating system and its software. We're not fans of the prices on hardware but we know that it's the only real option available for a viable Mac.

Then again we're all tired of the 3,476,546th discussion about apple's prices. Anyone who uses yet another car analogy loses.

Or c) unleashed their overzealous teenage offspring on the Mac community.

Well said.

Uh, no. I said that it would be a less scientific approach, and meant it as a joke. Apple has done and continues to do market research. But thank you for the personal insult.

Either the demand isn't there (which I doubt), or they are ignoring it for business purposes. If it's the latter, the question is whether or not it is a sound decision. I love Apple and I love my mac, but I can't help but feel slighted, frustrated, and ignored.

By the way, I wrote a letter requesting a tower 3 years ago when the mini came out.

Totally agree. Either get the edge back by doing a hard core refresh, or scrap the mini for a new mid-tower.

Hear hear on the first point. But on the second point, I thought my butt warmers in Phoenix analogy was pretty good. :)

Logic isn't your forte. Seriously. A MacPro doesn't have a trackpad either but that's not what most people that buy one desire as a "feature." :D

I really the get the concept of this PC Gaming. Why not just buy a console. You wont have to upgrade GPUs every 6 months, you get countless titles, online play etc

Maybe i'm just horribly misinformed but i personally think PC gaming is a waste of time...at least from the limited knowledge i have of it

Ok. If you were a car you'd be a Lifetime Channel program car portraying "victims" as "winners"... :D Think about it. :D

Ok... PS... edited to add: I didn't mean "you"... (the constant victims of "the man" who won't listen, is who I mean) ;)

Console gaming and computer gaming are completely different animals. There are a lot of genres that don't translate well. Its like telling a baseball player to go play soccer.

A decent graphics card was all I wanted. Thank you, Apple, for once again surpassing my expectations!

The waiting paid off :) 8800GS was enough of a push for me to get an iMac. Just got home from the Apple Store with a 3.06 & 8800gs. Now to setup, and transfer my data from my MBP!
