Well it seems to be Montevina.

http://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/37152/135/

Even the TG Daily article acknowledges the use of 25W TDP chips which is a characteristic of Montevina chips. The only custom chip appears to be the 3.06GHz chip with it's 55W TDP, compared to the 45W TDP when the official version is released. To the 3.06GHz chip is basically an early sample with a higher TDP like the original 3GHz Cloverton's Apple used were prereleases with a higher 150W TDP compared to the 130W TDP of the official versions.
Apple could be using early release processors across the line. We'll need some reports on what revision is in the new iMac.

So according to MR, this is a modified/custom SR....but according to Gizmodo this is the first Montevina because it utilizes 1066 Ram....

What is the actual verdict?

If you take Intel's word (from the article), it's a special version of the 45 nm Penryn processor for the company's Santa Rosa platform.

Highly debatable any way you look at it.

Yeah, the spectacular has always been his element. The indifference for the mundane and practical is the achilles heel of both him and this platform.

You guys probably have a selective memory about the previous Apple years, then...Apple has shown unparalleled wisdom in defining its segments...it's nothing related to "mindblowing" gadgets, it's about knowing what to sell in the right time to the right people.

For those a bit more experienced, just look back to the Performa years and you'll see how dangerous these thoughts were to Apple...the company listened to people like you and almost disappeared...eMate, Pippin, at least 10 desktop models, at least 10 laptop models, Workgroup Servers, Newton, displays, CD-ROM players, disk drives, floppy drives etc. etc. etc...SJ brought back some sanity in the house. This is a FACT and this is why Apple is the MOST successful computer company in the world now.

so how likely is it that the mini will be updated tomorrow? or soon at all?? im needing a mini BAD!! i dont want to buy one today and see a new update tomorrow or 10 days later. input?

But some would say he's gone too far to the opposite extreme. As I said before, Apple needs more of a "Woz" balance these days. I'm not calling for outright democracy at Apple. I think some Mac users would like to see a few requests finally answer though (such as the long sought after mid-tower).

Wow. I am still in a bit of disbelief that they actually did this. An 8800GS, with GDR3 Ram? Am I dreaming?

Most GPUs nowadays use GDDR3 VRAM. This is nothing spectacular or out of the ordinary.

Had I bought an Imac, a few months ago, with a 2600 HD card, I would have hated myself for buying it. It now feels like it has been worth the while. With all the waiting. Constantly checking macrumors.com for over three months.

Yes, that's the magical thing about technology - they continue to develop it. I am no psychic, but if you wait another few months, I am sure they will come out with something even better.

In any case, enjoy your new iMac, it will be a capable machine for a while to come. :)

Um...who here is asking for TEN desktop models?

And I beg to differ with the notion that "too many models" was the problem with the company. The machines simply weren't competitive on a price/performance basis.

And I have to agree with Ben. That is a great quote, I'll have to remember it.

overall very dissapointing.. there should have been a video card update accross the board.. seems selfish of apple.. oh well

Unfortunately, there will be no mid-tower. At least no time soon.

Here's your "mid-tower":

Apple is being selfish?
ok.

I agree that the company needs Steve's vision, but you can't possibly think that the company hasn't had its missteps since his return. I'm glad to have him back, but I'm not blind to the company's current weakness. The hockey puck is still too recent a memory. :)

Woz is a fine chap, but simply nonexistent as a businessman...he is great for thinking of SegWays or the next floppy drive...but to have him as a marketer is simply insane...Apple has plenty of people working everyday in order to discover or even define market needs...and believe me, they wouldn't be stupid to fall into the same trap that almost swallowed Dell and other cheap box makers...

Apple is about ADDING value and showing it to the customer, like the unequaled integrated value we see in iMacs now...and not about selling what every bakery in every corner already has.

So let's get down to earth here...the ONLY thing these people are complaining about is the supposed lack of a good and cheap headless choice, right?

Meaning that, if Apple updates the Mini and puts it in a bigger box with a PCI slot, everybody here is happy...and not buying iMacs either...

very disappointing Apple hasn't added a superdrive which can also read Blu-Ray discs. Also bummed that Apple hasn't started to offer Blu-Ray burning drive as an option.

Apple really wants to keep the HD movies on Apple products solely from itunes.

feels pretty lame!!

It is possible to get Blu-Ray on a Mac Pro or Power Mac G5, if you have the money:

I just wish that they offered it as an external drive, so that iMac and laptop owners could use it.

Edit: This one appears to support other models:

Anybody have any ideas as to whether or not it would be better to buy the current base model or the previous generation 2.4 20" model (either refurb or on closeout)? Machine will mainly be used for video editing and picture editing.

They did have too many models, there like six different breeds of professional tower alone. Now, they've gone completely the opposite direction in having too few. With some of the few they have, like the Mini, they've designed it with esthetic considerations, with usability a distant second.

Did anyone say we wanted Woz as a marketer? No. Go back and read the post where I said Jobs and Woz complimented each other in the early days. Jobs for his business sense. Woz for keeping Jobs from turning into a dictator. Woz provided democratic balance. He was "everyman's" advocate. Checks and balances, my friend.

Is anyone feeling comfortable about getting 4GB of ram from apple now that its 200, its gotten 500 cheaper from just a couple months ago

You can get 4GB total from OWC for under $100. So if you want, you can think of the extra $100 spent as getting the Super Special Apple Certified RAM.

Apple had the MOST powerful machines of the market back then, when PowerPC still kicked Intel's ass...and believe me, there was something for everyone...but that was it...TOO MUCH being sold, so that people had no idea what to buy...or that Apple wasn't ready to sell as many units of the models that people REALLY wanted, leading to ridiculous inventory problems...the original PowerBook line was just one of them; the BEST notebooks which sold as easily water...but a failure in the end because Apple underestimated the demand for them.

Anyone know the power-consumption of the old chips? The 3.06GHz chip is over twice that of the base model... I live in a hot country and was wondering as I'd heard reports the old models got quite hot... although I know the chip is just one part of the system.
