Wow, starting to look pretty good. I bet quite a few people were surprised to see the speed, ram, HD, and gpu all get bumps. Especially the gpu, no one seemed to think that this would be available just yet.

I'm waiting for two things Apple, 3.6GHz or better cpu speed and a blu-ray drive.

I wonder if the release of a 30" iMac is closer now that cpus and gpus are getting that much cheaper. A nicely configured 24" is under $3k now, I'd pay $1K more for a 30", but it would have to have a screaming gpu.

Your gonna start a new campaign now. I wish that would be the case. It would rock.

Finally the update I have been waiting for. I switched to an iMac G5 in October 2005 - it was that or build a PC tower Behemoth - the latter option being disavowed by mrss1m due to the uglyness of the pC tower.

I put in 2GB of Ram thinking this would be enough for semi decent gaming (Age of Empires/Civilization mostly) and have been a tad disappointed with the speed of the iMac - though I do love the OS.

Since then we have bought an iBook for mrss1m, an Xbox360 for HD gaming (Tomb Raider/Assassins Creed) and a Wii for fun gaming.

My plan is to upgrade the iMac G5 to probably the 3.06 with 4GB of Ram (for a premium of $100 I am happy to have Apple install the ram for me) and move the G5 into the Kitchen or Bedroom as a TV (maybe with the ultraportable wireless keyboard that came out recently).

Part of me is thinking of getting a mac mini for the lounge to connect to the 40in LCD but not sure what that would give me over my Xbox 360 (other than maybe playing Xvids direct to the TV rather than on USB through the Xbox - maybe a tad expensive for that?).

My only concern is that I don't want to be disappointed again by the performance. The main slowness has been gaming and video editing and I am hoping that with the beefier graphics card the new iMac will be able to cope better.

For me the form factor is a key element in the decision making process and linking that to the OS the iMac works brilliantly. If I can think of spending $40 on a single plate to serve bread and cheese at a dinner party then obviously it's not just about the pure performance ;) Any thoughts?

As an aside one thing I would love to explore in the future home automation and am concerned that might be something I need to switch away from Macs for...

P.s. A very tough decision for me today - my corporate IT group just approved me supplying my own Macbook Air to connect to our network (using a partition with a company standard WinXP operating environment) but I can't justify the cost of an air and an iMac (note I need the ultraportable for travel internationally and two hours a day on the train).

Who wants to bet 10.5.3 is released tomorrow, hence why this update was done today?

Since the iMac is also using the nVidia 8800 platform, we don't need 10.5.3, do we since 10.5.2 has the drivers?

I wonder if the ATI 3650 and 34x0 driver entries in 10.5.3 are for the rumored MacBook Pro upgrade? The ATI 3650 looks to be equivalent to the nVidia 8600M GT in the current MacBooks (it has a slightly higher 3DMark06 score - 31 points).

24" options.....plz help.

I am finally ready to make the mac switch and have been lurking for months trying to decide what I want/need.

I am looking at either the refurb 24" 2.8 extreme vs the new 2.8 or 3.06 model. I am very interested in video editing and possibly dabbling in photoshop. I have no interest in gaming on the mac.

Will the new models offer me noticeable gains for video editing? I would like to have any input on what impact the FSB bump, processor bump and/or the new video card option will have on video editing most likely with one of the final cut offerings.

The updates seem like a nice perk but hoped some of the great people here could shed some light if spending the extra $$$ will benefit my needs.

Thanks!!!

Where are these MacBook Pro update rumors? Someone wants to purchase my MacBook so my interest is peaked.

I don't think you will see any improvement with video editing from the GPU. If you use Apple's Motion which is part of Final Cut Studio however, it will probably make a difference. It relies on the GPU

Well, it'd be terrible if the MacBook Pro were to only move sideways given the 8600M GT has already been used in 2 MBP generations.

I'm hoping that Apple would get adventurous and use the 9700M GTS based on the G94 and is the only non-9800M to have 64 shaders. So basically near equivalent to the 8800 GS (aka 8800M GTS) in the new iMac. Here's to hoping for actual GPU improvements.

That article/discussion does refer to a new form factor, but one imagines that the MacBook Pro would see component updates to bring it to par with the iMac, though I would expect they will be the new generation of mobile Penryns to keep the TDP down and the battery life up either on an actual Montevina systemboard or the "Santa Rosa Specials". As such, they could move to new GPUs, as well. The reviews on the 3650 and 34x0 note that they have very good power consumption figures which would appeal to a mobile application.

We also have the "rumor" thread at https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/471999/ with the now discounted pictures.

I suppose they could be for new cards for the Mac Pro. I don't expect the MacBook or Mac Mini to get a dedicated GPU in the next refresh.

Perhaps the MacBook Pro will also get two classes of CPU/GPU? The ATI for the lower-clocked 15" units maximizing battery life and a G94-based option on the 17" with the more powerful CPUs?

I was hoping for something new and not articles that had fallen off of Page 1/2. :(

Thanks though.

Tremendous luck today! I had gone to the post office to see if the stimulus check had made to my house (me, the wife and child = nice check) which I was going to apply towards the top of the line iMac (which I've been telling her for several months that we needed to wait until they updated them soon)... when I got there, there was no government check, BUT...

There was a check from Chase Bank Finance that does our mortgage for a surplus in our escrow -- $1451.65!!!! I was and am very stoked!! Happy days, man!! And to come today was such good icing on the cake!

Oh boy another fanboy who can't get his head out of his a$$. Sorry if your another to bury your head in the sand. Their machines are good for 90% of the people? Oh, so you must be brain dead like all the rest.

Why would I buy a windows machine when they suck? That's not an option. I'm sorry but I've had an Apple machine for the last 20 years. It's only been recently that they have been pulling this kind of garbage. The base model is crap right out of the gate. Once again another who can't hear anyone say bad things about Apple. Get a clue. If you've ever done any computer repair work, then you'd know how much the parts cost and what kind of crap they are putting into their machines these days. All you can do is point to someone who has something critical to say and spout some gibberish. Please. And how about you just piss off, mr. crappy Tibook and POS iMac owner.

Why would I care about repair?? That's why I have 3 year warranty and I'm 100% sure this system will not stay that long in my home.

You seem like a very, very frustrated person. I suggest going out and living a life for a bit cause sitting in front of your "20 year old mac and thinking bout the old glory days" does make you talk lame and damn sad.

Get a life. Be happy. And if you don't like it. Get what you DO like. So simple.

...let me know when I can use it as a monitor. Is that too much to ask?

Oh, but then I wouldn't be able to pay $899 for a 23" Apple Cinema display.

This world is full of people that just accept this. They'll buy an iMac for home, and a macbook for on the go....but then they'll go ahead and buy that 23" display for their macbook too.

This is a prime example of why I own Apple stock but don't buy Apple products.

For almost the same price you can get a Mac Pro with 1x Quad Core and connect this beloved 23" of yours to it.
So you have a Mac AND a monitor you so desperately want.
Whoooaaa that was so complcated...

This world is full of people that just talk **** cause they have nothing else to say.

So what's the Montevina or penrynn verdict?

I asked on that apple store chat thing and this is the response I got:

"We do not brand the Intel chips but we use the latest technology available for our new Macs."

Wow...way to not give away anything

Seriously; did really expect an straight answer?:eek:

You'll get honest opinions and suggestions from this website. You should post that question here.

check out page 1, it is a special penryn chip on the santa rosa platform, designed specifically for the iMac. So it is a special version of santa rosa, which makes the performance about equal to montevina. I think they may skip montevina for now, and jump to it when nehalem comes out...

I am looking to get an iMac for college and I have the cash now. Should I wait until after WWDC to buy it or should I strike while the iron is hot now?

By "surplus" I mean that we OVERPAID for months and months -- this was our money to begin with. But it is a considerable amount at a great time and came on the day that the iMacs came out so it was a cool day!

my opinion is get it now. I dont think they will update because of the special chipset, and besides, even if they do, you still have a great computer, that should last you for a while. I think if you need it, and have the money (which is the reason i dont have my mac yet) then get it now, and dont worry about what they are doing to it until you need a new one. There is always something better a few months down the line, so just enjoy it.

This sentence does not make sense.

Nehalem is a CPU that plugs into the chipset that is part of the Montevina platform.

Apple may stick with Santa Rosa until Nehalem, but you can't jump from Santa Rosa to Nehalem.

Did you mean to say Calpella? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calpella

Yeah, my bad, that's what i meant. Sorry, still getting used to understanding processors and all. I meant they may stick with SR until Nehalem.
