Question here.. Why doesn't Apple match their memory chips FSB with the CPU's?

The CPU is 1066 but the memory is 800.. so it has a bottle neck there. I wonder if it's better to just grab the 2.8 refurb and upgrade the ram to 4 gigs.

Any one have an opinion on this?
The optimum RAM speeds for the 1066 MHz front side bus are 1066 MHz in single channel and 533 MHz in dual channel mode. The older 2.8 GHz machine is fine unless you really want more speed.

Desktop. Its based on the same G92 chip as the 8800GT. It the reason that its only in the 24" is probably because the 20" isn't large enough to cool it.
I think it's best to wait and see what the hardware reports. The 8800 GS moniker is vague. It could fall under the desktop or mobile line.

It seems they listened to those who said there should be an option for a more powerful video card, but not to those who wanted a matte screen option.

Some people think glossy is fine for small screens like laptops, but just not on 24".

There is no mobile 8800GS.

I hated glossy until I babysat a brand new 24" Alu 2.8Ghz iMac for two weeks. It was incredible, and despite my reservations about glossy screens, I'd buy one.

What advantages do the higher-end graphics cards hold for NON-gamers?
Doesn't it help with pro photo apps such as Aperture, Lightroom, etc? Does it help with HD movie playback e.g. 1080p? I thought the OS was able to offload some such tasks onto the GPU...

dollar -> euro

I don't know the old prices anymore. Did Apple take into account that the dollar is pretty much worthless these days, are the europeans still paying a hefty premium for living on this side of the atlantic?
It's difficult to compare directly, since the US-prices do not include taxes. Anyone here with some financial acumen?

Anyone know how the 8800 GS card performs over the radeon? Is it worth the 150 bux for the upgrade?

My irs money is coming sometime this week and it is already burning a whole in my pocket:D

Yes, I agree overall it is an amazing computer.

What a disappointing set of video cards. No matte screen. No Blu-ray. No quad core. Oh well. The trend continues. Sad, really. Time to move on.

The bottleneck is the other way around. The memory is installed in pairs in a dual channel configuration to run at double the speed. The memory is faster than the front side bus.

This is why Intel is doing away with the front side bus (and AMD did long ago).

It will help with Aperture, since Aperture makes heavy use of the graphics card with it's core image processing. It won't make much of a difference in Lightroom, as that program relies mostly on the CPU.

So any ideas on why a Monday update? Have they ever updated before on a Monday?!?

i believe so yes...

so good update, small but juicy on the iMac... no matte screen, i doubt they will ever do it now... there has to be an anti-glare sticker to go with it... powersupportusa.com does it for even the 17in macbook pro

and the RAM has changed, but i havent seen it on the market yet.. i'll have to ask my suppliers for pricing, hmmm I expect them to change all macs to 800mhz... so we'll see mac mini and macbook upgrades in the next 2-3 months... more rumorrrsssss... and oh yeah... the Mac Pro they released this year is already listed as (Early 2008).... rumors rumors rumors....

Quick question about this 800MHz RAM. The system bus speed on the Penryn MBPs is 800MHz. If some of this faster RAM were to be installed in a Penryn/Santa Rosa machine would it run at 800MHz or scale back to 667?

Have to know as I need to update the RAM on my MBP, but can wait a couple of months if it means a speed increase.
