iPod mini 4GB: $199
PSP with 32MB Duo included: $250

Where is the comparison? One is designed for music, and the other sucks at it. Anyway, the highest card for a PSP is 2GB. For $450.

So, iPod mini 4GB: $199
PSP With 2GB Pro Duo: $700

Once again, where is the comparison?

You can watch video on UMD disk (but this is other way around)or hack it with other memory sticks, view photos, wireless to your router for online game, also wireless with other PSP players nearby, and MP3 player...

Get the most out of your iPod photo. Coming in March, new software lets you:

Choose new slideshow transitions on the go

Upload photos directly from your camera using the optional iPod Camera Connector accessory, also arriving in March.

The question is if I buy a 40G will I be able to use this new accessory????

I always thought that Apple told iPod users to charge their iPod fully the first time through use of the AC Adapter.

The iPod photo manual's section about getting started says to charge it by connecting the dock->usb cable to the power adapter. But later in the manual it says you can charge via USB2.0 as well. Never mentions anything about the first time.

now heres an idea for apple. get rid of the ac plug for powerbooks and charge them via firewire using the same powerbrick as the ipods! ive always wondered why they didnt do that. i always wondered if it would work but i dont have the balls to try it on my pb.

They haven't done it because you can't run that much power through a FireWire connector, maybe? A PowerBook has that power brick because it needs it. Even if they made a special power-only version of a Firewire cable, people would still use the one that couldn't carry enough and their PBs would die. Next, you'd have to change the firewire hardware on the computer side to be a power manager and to accept a lot more (AC or DC) current than the existing FW design can handle. Moreover, we already have a dedicated power-only cord for our computers: the power cable! Either way, you need an electrical outlet and a connector on the PB, so what would be the point?

DAMN i know everyone knew this already, but stupid me rushed out to get one at the apple store.. i get home.. and theres no power adapter!! wtf apple what do you want me to do when im not at home with my comp? oh, and thank god i have an old ipod firewire to dock connector laying around that i found at school last year... my rev a 17 inch 'book doesnt have usb2!!! grrrrrr what were you thinking apple

No power adapter

VWcruisin, I am with you.. I can see not including a case but power adapter.. With the iPod Shuffle, I can see there not being a power adapter.. It not cost effective, but come on Apple.. iPod minis and above, how can you cheapen it to this point.. Had I bought mine today, I would have been screwed trying to condition the battery.. Nothing like leaving your laptop turned on all night long to charge an iPod.. Seems pretty backwards.. :(

Pretty sad apple. If it werent for your loyal fan base, you wouldnt be were you are today.. how are we thanked? you stab us in the back and cater to the pc user at our expense.... sell outs :(

now that I have stared at it long enough, maybe a green one

I browsed the apple website, and maybe the green will work.. Still, before a new product was released and immediately I was all over it.. I will have to have the green one grow on me.. If it wasn't for my girlfriends charger than all bets would be off.. Nothing like keeping the apple loyalty happy.. Hopefully this is a minor bump in a pretty decent streak for Apple.. We can only HOPE.. ;) :D

firewire vs usb

if i had to chose between fast mac to pod transfer OR being able to load from camera direct to pod, i'd go for the speed right now. cos tho' i'm happy to buy my first ipod with a nice colour screen... it's still a music player first.. and now that the 60gb is in my price range, an external harddrive second... looking at nice photos comes down the list...

question for fellow australians.. how far from departure date can i buy my new ipod and still be able to claim it duty free once i get to the airport? :)

I am disappointed with the switch to USB... I didn't really like it when I saw the USB adapter for the shuffle. I smelled trouble. Since the regular iPod (and U2) are the only models currently shipping with the firewire cable, I'm assuming that it will continue to ship with the Firewire Power Adapter... as no change was announced. So the next question is... what will become of the firewire power adapter? Judging by this current unfortunate trend... looks like it'll be headed the way of the western soldier. I didn't expect them to continue manufacturing two different power adapter standards.

It almost feels like.. whats next.. "PC + Mac Compatible... thats right folks, we support the included USB 2.0 standard, and now the renamed, optional IEEE 394 cable". :-(

The switch to "PC + Mac" is sort of a slap in the face. I am often working on my friends defending and promoting apple. And like earlier mentioned... if I were a new iPod user, or mini upgrader, I certainly would not want to keep my PB G4 on all night to charge the iPod.

Er...there are no more 40GB iPods...

Well, if i remember well 40Gig have doubleplatter which make them sort of big(well something like 1/4 of and inch but on a ipod it look big!).So maybe apple wanted to have sleekest ipod possible. The same apply to the 60Gig which surely got double 30Gig platter (ok.. they still make some but heavy user dont care 'bout size). 80Gig will be availble when 40Gig on a single plate will be a viable option for a portable device.

Clarify

OK. Just to clarify:

The new iPod PHOTOs DO come with an AC Power adapter right? It is just the minis that don't.

Also. I have an existing 3G 20GB iPod with FW cable and dock. I just ordered a 30GB iPod phtot. considering these two devices are nearly identical in size (the photo is 0.01 inches thicker), do you think the dock will work with the new iPod photo? My FW cable will work directly, right?

What's the safer business plan? Making the 80% buy a separate cable or the 20%?

How about both cables? Hard drives currently ship with 2 or 3 cables--USB, FW400, FW800 (if they have that capability). It's a couple of bucks when purchased in bulk of 10s of 1000s. This is a bad move--is apple planning on ending FW support on their computers?

With the TIVO rumor today (and seeing what things like Elgato EyeTV can do in small video windows) I think that the iPod's next step is video. Taking DVDs you own or recorded TV shows with you on your iPod is the way to go. I see FW400 or FW800 for that.

I don't think FireWire is going anywhere. There are many devices that use it but do not come with the cables. I will always opt for firewire prior to going USB, even if it means spending extra money for the cable. I agree and am also disappointed that the FireWire cable is not included but I think they went with the least and most common cable in use. There is a dual cable but I have often wondered if that cable actually confuses people, making them think they have to plug both ends, usb and firewire in.... either way, I think FireWire has a good future and even though it is unfortunate that it is not included, it is not shocking because most FireWire devices come cable-less.

I'm probably one of few people who are going to go as far as to refrain from buying an iPod anymore. I was very tempted to get a new iPod (60 GB), but I discovered that they didn't come with a Firewire cable and decided that it's not worth my money to get an iPod that won't be functional right out of the box for me. Yes, I know that USB 2.0 can work over 1.1, but that's going to be so slow, I might as well just own a CD player. I am nearly boycotting the iPod line because of this. They're distancing the users that made Apple what it is. And for what? A cable that costs 19 cents to make and toss in a box.

Yup. The 60GB photo I talk about in the thread linked above was $450 w/ EDU discount, and my wife's green 6GB mini was nicely discounted, too. :D
