Oh, and time for an upgrade? Upgrade what?

Kinda odd that you say exactly what apple says, in an argument against apple leaving out the firewire cable:

Yeah, I could buy the cable if I buy the iPod, but why pay $20 more for a firewire cable that I have no use for?

Hello, the number of USB capable to firewire capable computers is prob 10 to 1 or more!

You answered your own question there....

So why don't you just BUY a firewire cable? It's only $20, less if your a student or find a refurb. The price just dropped a LOT, you can afford to purchase whatever accessories you want that are no longer included. Kinda seems like a good selling point to me. Not everyone wants Apple's case or the dock, or even a firewire cable. Personally, I just bought a refurb firewire cable for $10 at the Apple store, and I'm good for now.

But the point is that Apple has alienated me and a good majority of Mac users because we don't have USB 2.0. The big thing about the iPod is that it was usable out of the box. You could pull out the necessary parts to charge it without having to buy anything else. You could connect it to your computer in the best way possible without worry because both cables were there. That's no longer the case and that's whats upsetting.

no reason to worry.... i don't think.

Seeing as how you can get a 40 GB iPod photo with all the accessories for $30 more (look under the Apple "Special Deals" section), I opted for that instead of the new models. When I first placed the order, under my order status it said "iPod photo 40 GB (w/dock and carrying case)." However, when I received my invoice from Apple a few hours later, it read: "Apple iPod 40 GB w/color display". It says nothing about the accessories such as the cables, dock, or carrying case that are supposed to come with it. Could Apple possibly have stripped my order? It seemed like I was getting a GREAT deal here, but if the extra stuff is no longer included then I'm not sure I want to go ahead with the order. :( Is it showing this for anyone else who ordered one of the new iPod photo models today? I'm just kinda worried right now...

I did the same thing as you. I didn't notice the description difference though. I think we're fine. All this stuff is already in the box. Apple's not going to go through all their old 40gig ipod boxes, take the docks and things out, repackage them and then sell the them. Right?

don't complain until it arrives. if it doesn't have what you want, call support, and they will probably send the extras.

I'm quite disappointed that they've changed to USB 2.0 as standard for mac interfacing as opposed to firewire. I always find the syncing performance of firewire much faster and more efficient than via USB 2.0. Guess it's to keep costs down so they don't have to bundle 2 cables with the iPods for Mac and PC users.

Otherwise, a very good update. I guess they're trying to phase out the old monochrome display iPods in favour of the iPod Photo. The 60GB is now cheaper than what the 40GB monochrome iPod was.

6 months more and i'll be switching to an iPod photo no doubt. Maybe even the rumored Bluetooth iPods by then? Lets hope so.

I just took a closer look at the Silver mini. It's not silver. It's graphite.

I thought similarly after checking out the gallery at apple.com, but the photos of the 6GB version at ipodlounge.com seem to indicate that there's no difference in colour between the 1G and 2G models. I hope that's the case anyway, as I've just ordered one!

Man, the deals over at Amazon are enticing for the "old" iPod mini 4gb.

$179.00 is insane.

I don't even need one, and think I might buy one as a gift for someone in the future.

Just bought a mini

I was waiting to get a mini for my fiance for her wedding present and i'm thankful i waited. Saved $50 (we're quite the budget conscious peeps) so thanks to the good people at macrumors. I doff my cap!

WAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!! Your USB will run at 1.1. Either way it works!!!!!!!!!! Jesus god ol mighty. Everyone just [profane acronym removed] about the firewire cable. Go buy it.

I had to bite on the $339.00 40GB iPod Photo with all the old goodies in it.

Not really in the budget right now, plus I just bought a 20GB, but I can sell it to a friend or on Ebay.

Just too good a deal on 40GB - I figure it will last me a good long time with that kind of space, and I can show my work to my clients on the fly.

:D

Yea, it works at a protocol that is about 5 years old and is absolutely worthless and slower than a 90 year old crippled man.

Do you ever sleep? Fine. I thought so. Plug it in before you go to bed, and when you wake up in the morning all of your music will be there.

It was just too good to pass up. My significant other is likely going to cut me up into small pieces and put me into a TV box and send me down the Chesapeake Bay, but maybe I can placate them by giving them my just-bought 20GB iPod. :D

Apple must have given the sellers that had significant stock a rebate deal on old models as they are probably anxious to get this new line in and the old out.

That said, the new line is just about perect, aside from cheapening out what comes with the iPods (FireWire) and chargers on some models....

Plus PC and Mac? That's just a slap in the face.

USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 both have the same 500 ma of power !!

Yeah, and USB 1.1 is KILLER fast. No charge either.

Note that both versions of USB provide 500 ma at 5v from a normal port (and 100 ma from an "unpowered" hub or port). Check the specs or a technical review (e.g. http://www.analogzone.com/iot_0916.pdf).

I wonder where this "USB 1.1 doesn't have power" myth got started.... If USB 1.1 didn't provide power, what's been making the keyboard and mouse and USB floppies and all that other stuff work since the Bondi iMac???

And, BTW, test of Microdrives show about 5 MB/sec read/write speeds - therefore USB 2.0 would only be about 5 times faster than USB 1.1 in real life....

That's a big difference, but we're not talking about a killer delta like you find between a modem and broadband.

What's the big deal out there...I would say 95% of you don't have a gen 1 iPod. So that means you have a compatible fire-wire cable to work with a new iPod. Why put another cable in a box, you already have the damn cable...
New iPod Photo 60gb:$449
Firewire cable:$19
Dock:$39.00
A/V cables: $19.00

Old iPod Photo 60gb with accessories: 599

Cost of new iPod with USB: $449
Cost of new iPod with all accessories: $526
Cost of old iPod with all accessories: $599

Seems pretty simple to me- if you want all the accessories go for it and buy them. Otherwise I'll keep my old firewire cable and buy an 60gb iPod photo for 449.

I wonder if there was this much complaining when the first iPod came out and people with 1 year old iMacs couldn't use it at all.

"Apple is showing they'd rather support Windows users than loyal Mac users"

Get over yourselves. Apple wants to support the largest percentage of their customers. You don't like it, don't buy it. Apple doesn't owe you anything and you don't owe them anything. If you like the product/services they provide, buy them, if not, buy something else. All this talk about loyalty makes me laugh.

Great work around.

What do you want? It'll still work out of the box with the computer, if you want great performance, yes you'll have to pony up 20 bucks, but it'll work out of the box. But if they provided just a firewire cable there's a lot more computers it wouldn't work out of the box with. And all this talk about the cable only costing them 20 cents or a dollar, please. While it doesn't cost 20 dollars, it certainly costs more than a dollar.

Probably.

"You don't like it, don't buy it " is a weak come back to the argument - offer something a bit more insightful.

Loyalty? Without loyalty, Apple wouldn't even be here, so let's not even start that one. Are you trying to tell me that Apple made it through all those rough times because of Windows users?

They don't owe us anything, but a little respect and common sense. We're their user base, we're the onse that buy their hardware, we're the ones that support their OS and nine times out of ten, we're the ones peddling their wares to would-be customers. I've probably been responsible for several thousand dollars in sales for them - and I'm a small fish. I have several thousand dollars of my own money wrapped up in their gear. Yeah, they do owe us something, so keep laughing.
