Gutted as!!

I should love the new updates apple has done to the Ipod line....
EXCEPT i ordered a 20gb iPod on the 15th Feb. I really wanted the 40gb photo but didnt have the cash.
By Friday they were tipping the new Mini's i thought oh well i dont want a Mini.
Got the pod on Monday love/ed it. Now today i find out that i can get the photo for the same as i paid, ($450 edu). CUT AS!!!. I would love to have got the photo. Now i am desperatly running round school trying to sell my iPod for $400.
Not Fair Apple tell us when we are getting updates and sell models at run out prices!!!
I might also try eBay.
Anyone got any suggestions.

I'm probably one of few people who are going to go as far as to refrain from buying an iPod anymore. I was very tempted to get a new iPod (60 GB), but I discovered that they didn't come with a Firewire cable and decided that it's not worth my money to get an iPod that won't be functional right out of the box for me. Yes, I know that USB 2.0 can work over 1.1, but that's going to be so slow, I might as well just own a CD player. I am nearly boycotting the iPod line because of this. They're distancing the users that made Apple what it is. And for what? A cable that costs 19 cents to make and toss in a box.

So why don't you just BUY a firewire cable? It's only $20, less if your a student or find a refurb. The price just dropped a LOT, you can afford to purchase whatever accessories you want that are no longer included. Kinda seems like a good selling point to me. Not everyone wants Apple's case or the dock, or even a firewire cable. Personally, I just bought a refurb firewire cable for $10 at the Apple store, and I'm good for now.

Did anyone notice the box for the new iPod mini?

It now says "PC + Mac", it used to say "Mac + PC".

Guess that says it all now doesn't it?

Got Mine!

Nice update, will be calling to get a $50 price match on the iPod mini I bought two weeks ago. Only thing that is crappy is no more firewire cable included with the Minis. And no more dock with the photo. Look in the sale section, old photos are there for $379 and $479 with case, dock, etc.

The Apple Retail Stores are selling out quick on the old iPod Photos!
I returned my 15 day old 40Gb and got myself a 60Gb for a steal! $21 back into my pocket! I can't believe they paid me to take a 20Gb larger iPod. Yes I could have gotten more back if I had taken a new packaged 60Gb. But I need a dock for use in my car.

I returned my 40Gb tonight for an old pack 60Gb. Got to you're local Apple Store. They didn't question me at all. I know three other people who did the same at other stores.

It is unfortunate that the order was swapped... I want to say that most likely it was a design decision... ya, um, that is what I am going with.

They are inconsistent... in the store it says Mac + PC.. so just a case of not being consistent with wording.

Just got mine (30gig photo for $44 out of pocket) and I'm NOT happy.

The crappy USB brick does not work with my dock, which means the iPod will be sitting on my desk until I get back there for their magical iPod photo dock. Strike one.

The songs synced fine, but when I tried to put in my photos (or rather, iTunes tried) I get "unknown error -63." No photos, no love. I tried just putting in one album.. nothing.

I'm reformatting now, and I'll post an update tomorrow. Between all the USB junk and the crummy update, this is the first time I've not been drooling over an apple product for the first 12 hours of my ownership. My Shuffle is now "ole' faithful"

personly I think this update is kind of crappy. They no logger give an AC/DC aptor with the minis nor a firewire cord.

They no longer sell the 40gig modle and then with the ipod photo you no longer get the dock that comes with it. NO they want you to pay another 40 for it.

Your hard to please mate in oz 60gb photo has droped A$300 so i'm not to upset to pay 50$ for a dock

Thats an opinion. I dont know about over there in England  But here in America(USA) its a democracy. His opinion is just as valid as yours and so is what he says whether its in 1 word,2 words, or however many words he decides to use for that matter. It is 19 bloody dollars. If I really wanted something, I wouldn't let a cable purchase dissuade me.

Just buy the Firewire cable, and sell your USB one on eBay. Or give up your venti mocha lattes for a week. If you can't do any of the above, then get a Zen Micro. I hear they ship with a Firewire cable. nottttt. :)

True. But why should Mac users have to pay a tax to use Apple technology on Apple computers?

This is just a though and not an attack, but the way I'm looking at it is that most "Apple users" probably have an iPod already and thus most likely already have the Firewire cable, I know I do. So now if I were to buy an iPod photo or iPod mini (I have the 4th gen 20 gig) I can get it at a cheaper price but still have my existing firewire cable... and its not like I can charge more than one iPod at a time on my iBook... now this may only be the case for myself and thus is the way that I see it. I just think that most of the Apple users would already have the cable - that is unless they've changed the adapter on the iPod and for some stupid reason my current Firewire cable will no longer work but I do not think that is the case... And even with the dock not being included anymore I wouldn't see that as a huge deal either. I'm sure I read it somewhere in this thread, but, the split of people using and not using the dock is probably 50/50 and those who don't want one shouldn't pay for it and those that do want one should pay for it (and will have to do so albeit separately)

iPods use a special Doc/FireWire configuration, so you would not be able to use your current normal FireWire cable... this is not a new set up, been this way for some time now 3G was the first I think.

No no, I mean my current iPod firewire cable, not just an ordinary firewire cable. I was talking about the one that came with my 4th gen iPod... sorry I wasn't clearer. I was just saying that *unless* they have switched the actual connector on these new iPods (which I'm 99.99999% sure they have not done) then people that already have an iPod that came with the iPod firewire cable could continue using that one.

well, I'm with you on that... I have a dock and firewire cable. So I personally am not affected. But its still lame that Apple is treating mac owners as second class citizens. I get why they are doing it but its still pretty lame. Besides, usb 2 isn't as widespread as everyone thinks... plenty of people with pc's just have usb 1.0. And I'm guessing about 90% of Mac users don't have usb 2.0. And it would seriously suck to have to transfer via usb 1.0.

Also, I'm concerned that Apple might be going down the path of abusing its leading position and screwing over buyers. Usually resulting in competitors catching up and overtaking Apple. A common occurrence in Apple history.

As for the other stuff they are leaving out...

dock: nice but you can get by without one just fine
case: fairly useless, no big deal that they left that out
power adapter: really stupid that they left that out. A LOT of people go on vacations and want their iPod but NOT their laptops, if they even have one. If its a vacation, a lot of people like to "unplug" a bit. I know I do.

A tad worried...

Seeing as how you can get a 40 GB iPod photo with all the accessories for $30 more (look under the Apple "Special Deals" section), I opted for that instead of the new models. When I first placed the order, under my order status it said "iPod photo 40 GB (w/dock and carrying case)." However, when I received my invoice from Apple a few hours later, it read: "Apple iPod 40 GB w/color display". It says nothing about the accessories such as the cables, dock, or carrying case that are supposed to come with it. Could Apple possibly have stripped my order? It seemed like I was getting a GREAT deal here, but if the extra stuff is no longer included then I'm not sure I want to go ahead with the order. :( Is it showing this for anyone else who ordered one of the new iPod photo models today? I'm just kinda worried right now...

I think the power adapter is one additional item that everyone would agree on keeping, even if it would make them $10,15,20 or how ever much more expensive. I think most people could live without having the dock, case and firewire cable because there are people that would never use some of those (or already have them) but the new users - especially those that have desktops - will be very frustrated with the lack of power adapter.

As soon as I found out about these I jumped on ICQ and held a quick auction for my 20 GB 3G, then I purchased the iPod Photo 40 GB - according to my reseller it includes all accessories.

MacRumors has gotten huge in the past year or so and the threads have become almost impossible to read. If everybody posted something actually meaningful, we'd have shorter threads. Simple.

Sorry about being off-topic.

All those that say, "Apple is finally not charging us for things we don't need." Thats a fine argument, but to be fair, Apple should not include ANY cables with the iPod mini or iPod Photo and knock $17 off both of their prices. Then the "USB 2.0 fans" will have to go through the same process as the "Firewire 400 fans."

Yeah, they would have to *shock and horror!* spend few bucks and buy and extra cable! Oh the humanity!

Seriously: Apple just gave their customers substantial price-reductions. And even with that extra cable, it's STILL cheaper than the old models were! Hell, I would love to see the look on the whiner's faces, if Apple raiced the price back to where they were, but they added the Firewire-cable in there. At least you guys weren't ripped off then, right? Happy then?

Seriously, thing thing is ridiculous! Not all people need Firewire. those who really need it, are in the minority. Those that do need it, can easily buy the required cable, and they still save money in doing so!

I just picked up a 30GB iPod photo from the store today. I'd like to say it was a needless impulse buy but unfortunately, my 20GB 4G iPod was stolen not long ago and I decided that I might as well get a replacement - lo and behold only a few days after having my iPod stolen Apple announces this update and that was enough to convince me.

Luckily enough, the guy who stole my iPod wasn't thorough enough to take the firewire cable or AC adaptor so I still get my firewire goodness.

Well...it officially makes NO SENSE to buy a 1GB iPod shuffle. For $50 dollars more (not even one hundred) you get four times as much memory, and a screen.
Unless of course, you want a smaller, lighter, flash based player. Then it makes perfect sense.

An intelligent marketing decision aimed at the majority of Apples market - the un-informed first time PC owning buyer.

Well you see that just isn't true. It depends on which iPod you bought in the past. For me that is the first generation and it does use a regular firewire cable as you would use for a hard drive. The advantage of the newer model is flexibility of options.

Anyway, I bought a 40GB iPod photo today with the 'weird' firewire cable and dock. I figured for another US$79 over the 20GB I was planning on getting, it was a steel just for the disk space. Hell, it was just $30 more than the new 30GB! I've been playing with the photo stuff and that is cool too. I'll likely use it for photos occasionally. :)

Oh yea. I'll have to get another car power adapter because the cable is different.
