P.S. Also note that the symbols on the click-wheel are now in the case-color and no longer gray...

I think it looks terrible like that, Especially the silver and blue ones. I can barely read them!

I have to say I don't like this update, they aren't as slick and classy now. Now they are just loud.

I don't know anyone with a 70GB library of music, let alone a legal one. 100GB
would equate to approx 25000 songs or 2000+CDs, the market for such a player is very limited. I have only about 20% of my iPod filled [given I dont have a large library]. I would question as to whether those with 100GB of MP3's actually could list 10% of the artists in their library.

If you want to back up your computer data, get an external drive, this will be MUCH cheaper.

I have 60 gigs, but that is because I do the lossless format. It would be easy to achieve 100 gigs in lossless.

I apologize if someone's already mentioned this, but I'm in a bit of a rush and not really able to read all 16 pages...

On the tech specs pages, the iPod still has the FireWire cable; I know people were worried about it with the iPod mini, but I think it's just because you don't need FireWire for 6 gigs, especially with the speed USB 2.0 is supposed to go at. Of course, I feel bad for the PC users who don't have USB 2.0 and have to get the AC adapter and FireWire cable to connect to the wall. That's rough.

I may be wrong, but I think it is just the 20 gig and the U2 iPod that still have the firewire... the new 30 and 60 gig iPod photo's do not come with one... at least thats what I think I read. If I'm wrong, please correct me becasue I'm not positive

iPod Shuffle delivery slipped 5 weeks

..from 23/2 to 31/3..

these new iPod Mini's look mighty tempting..

So thanks to this update I went ahead and bited the bullet and bought a iPod mini. I went with the blue 6 GB. I decided to go for the firewire cable too b/c I wasn't sure which I was going to use for my main transfer computer. I have an older PC that only has USB 1.1 and I also have an older Powerbook G4 that has firewire. The computer has more songs on it but the laptop is the one with iTune MS songs on it.

decisions decisions

new ipod updater finally gives us 3rd generation users decent updates
YAYYAYAYAY (could have been done sooner)

You are correct. Unlike the photo, the 20GB and U2 are not being repackaged; they come with the same accessories as before. Don't expect to see the FW cable in the next revision though. :(

urgh, i take that back
THE IPOD UPDATER KILLED MY IPOD.
yep, doesn't work at all but i can hear something happening inside. hmmmmm...

But... do you really want to buy from a company that wont think twice about shafting their user base?

How exactly did they "shaft" their userbase? By introducing cheaper products with better features?

The did the right thing by dropping the gold one, as that colour never really caught on with users, anyways.

Actually I wanted a gold one, but I wanted to wait for the revision. Now I am screwed, because you don't get the old ones anywhere anymore... :(

Why dont you read the thread properly before making yourself look daft?

I said on that very same post that I thought the updates were good, but perhaps Apple could show some recognition towards users with older machines. I never said they were shafting them.

That above quote was responding to a previous poster who had an odd idea on how businesses should treat their existing customers.

If I were Mr T for the A-Team, I would be pitying you big time.

I WOULD NOT COUNT ON THESE IPODS BEING AROUND AFTER THE NEXT UPDATE ;)

Has anyone compared a new 30gb to the existing gb and noticed any reason to buy on sale 40gb photo while they are still around.

buy.com has the 40GB iPod photo on sale for $339.00, a price I couldn't resist. Free shipping. I ordered it yesterday, tracked it this morning, and it will be here around 10:30.

You get, in addition to the new 30GB:

10GB more space
Dock with S-Video out
AV cable for playing back on TV
FIREWIRE CABLE
Belt case
Carrying pouch

Now I have a two-week old 20GB iPod that is most likely headed for Ebay, I guess. :)

yeah it'd be nice to have a new ipod but 3 weeks ago my 40gb 3G was replaced by apple under warranty. so i've got a nice, new, unscratched 40gb model, and i like the 3G's more than the click wheel ones anyway

so i'm happy anyway...

Did I ever say that businesses should screw their customers? No. I said they don't owe their customers anything. It's this silly notion of loyalty that brought it up. So many people here are acting like Apple owes them because they were "loyal" to Apple for many years, but that's just bull. They didn't buy their iPods and Powerbooks and iBooks and whatnot out of loyalty, they bought them because it's what they liked.

Ridiculous.

First of all, let me express how I am disappointed and depressed on both updates..

1. The iPod photo update with a drop to 30GB and decreasing the 60GB to $450 cannot, in any understandable way justify the way the asked $500 for the 40GB iPod photo a few months ago. They did take out the FireWire (the devil knows why), they took out the dock, and the casing, and the pouch. But that changes nothing.

Firewire cable = $20
Dock= $40
Casing = $30
Pouch = Cannot buy, even if we could not more than $10. (Maybe even $5)

$90-100 Dollars in total. Previous 60GB price = $600 Current, $450. Thats a $150 dollars drop. What happened to the $50-60 dollars? Where? Especially irritating and unacceptable is how the 60GB went below the previous 40GB level. Apple's all well trying to make money, but this is highly insulting to those who believed in Apple and bought their stuff even though they pulled a high price.

Only acceptable explanation is that they're bringing in the 5G iPods soon or either they're going to make the current 4G B/W iPods disappear and intergrate the iPod photo to be the next 5G iPod with the NEXT update.

Other highly irritating thing is how buy.com is selling the iPod photos for $330 when a lot of us had to buy it through Apple when they released it for $500. One can't blame buy.com. Its Apple. They're letting buy.com and elsewhere places to sell the 40GB off quickly so they can get on with their marketing strategy.

This particular move by Apple has taken a significant level of points off Apple's good image from me personally. All goes to show they're no longer about the good exclusive image, but about mass marketing.

This is further enhanced by the new iPod mini releases.

2. Firstly, I am disappointed about the lack of color screens. Just doesn't make sense. EVERYONE ELSE IN THE MARKET IS NOW GOING FOR COLOR WHY THE F NOT APPLE? This ridiculous stubborness will cost Jobs. Not trying new things...not Apple-like at all. They've become very cautious...and they don't need that. The way the box says PC + Mac is also another sign of Apple finally acknowledging the power of money. They've tasted it with the iPods and they want more of it. The majority being the PC market. Logical, but highly disappointing from a hardline neo-Apple fan.

Overall, disappointing. The new iPod minis nothing really changed, no design updates, nothing. As for photos, complete mockery of previous photo users.

I dont think I was saying that you were saying that either

I hear what you are saying, but with certain brands (like Apple) alot of the purchases are bought partly out of blind loyalty. The current line of Macs are great, but 8 years ago Macs were not a compelling option. Some of them old Macs stank! Yet, they still sold machines partly out of irrational loyalty.

Your profile name suggests you're British, am i right? A good comparison would be British cars in the 70s and 80s. The quality of those cars from the British Leyland truely stank yet they were bought mainly in Britain out of loyalty.

i ordered my 40gig Photo on wednesday, it shipped yesterday, ill be getting it today via regular ground shipping ive never had such a speedy delivery before. apple is awsome.

Now what I'd like would be a way of using an iPod Photo as a Firewire recording device with my Canon DV XM-1 camcorder. Record the DV out directly to disk, i would get a godd couple of hours recording time, and a tape backup recorded at the same time. Then no more capture from tape session, just import teh file and start editing.

What do you think? Bet it actually COULD be done, but i doubt it ever will. Would be a really neat extra in the iPod arsenal of tricks!

Ordered mine yesterday and it's charging as we speak (from buy.com).

A little thick, but can't wait to get it set up and loaded.

Thing has a bigger HDD than my iBook!

Except, you know, the computer will fall asleep before it's finished, therefore no longer allowing the transfer to continue and the charging of the iPod will make the computer shut off completely since the power being drawn to charge the iPod is too much for a sleeping computer.
Even with firewire, the computer can go to sleep before the transfer is complete if you set the sleep time too low. That's the user's responsibility. Set the sleep time so it'll have time to complete, or not sleep at all. And an iPod will charge just fine from a sleeping computer. I don't know where you got the idea that drawing too much power from a port will make a Mac shut down--that's just bunk.

You do not have to buy it from Apple at all, unless of course you want something on its release day/week whatever.

I always buy the stuff from somewhere else where I do not have to pay taxes or even better, get coupons and/or rebates. I got my iBook from Amazon and with their rebate and promotion I saved more than $400 over Apple store's retail price with sales tax.

On the other hand, it is kind of interesting that Apple have this 'price protection' for their big resellers (like buy.com or Amazon) but did not give it to HP. No wonder that the HP iPod is over big time. Imagine their face, if they'd still had to sell the iPod Photo for $500 after Apple's price drop.

And on the FW cable one more time: we can ALL afford the $20 cable, sure. But the problem here is Apple being cheap not including the adapter and even more cheap for not including a dual cable (that costs no more than the single cable).
