This is about loyalty. Nothing else.

You have got to be kidding. If anything, Wednesday's releases ARE loyal to the current Apple business model. Let's do the math:

New 4GB unit price = $199 [comes with a USB 2.0 cable only]. To replicate what was the old package, you'd have to buy an additional FW-based power adapter [$29] and a FW cable [$19]. The total for that = $247, only two bucks cheaper than the original. However, and this is a HUGE point, you get a fair amount more than twice the battery life, AND you are NOT forced to buy the extras unless you want to. I can't define win-win any better.

Is the new 60gb ipod phot the exact same unit as the old 60gb ipod photo? They just dropped the dock and the firewire cable right? Are the the same size? Same battery life, same firmware etc?

I am sure iPodLounge will soon get one and report on it. Personally, I rather spend the extra $15 (or whatever it is) than be disappointed. But you may think otherwise. I am just kind of skeptic that apple didn't do a thing to it. I believe the part number is different, for whatever that is worth.

If speed is the issue, calm down, USB 2.0 benches nearly as fast as FW 400. If you don't have USB 2.0 ports on your current Mac, that's a hardware problem on your end, not Apple's. If the notion of Apple not including FW because it's their technology is bothersome, consider the cake and frosting metaphor—apparently, some want success and mass appeal for Apple as long as it fits neatly into their own configuration.

From my vantage point, massively increased battery life AND $50 bucks less for the 4GB Mini is an astonishing upgrade!

The cable thing is a shaft because it could mean the death of Firewire, which is much better technology than USB 2.0. Apple has made a dumb decision to shaft older Mac users, make Firewire suddenly less prevalent, all the while saving themselves a few bucks per iPod. It's a bad faith transition.
I would understand if USB 2.0 was better than Firewire, I would understand if it were expensive or impossible to make both connections and I understand removing the dock. But just to trim the price point a little and keep that fat margin while screwing over Apple users—you know those people who kept Apple alive to build the G5, iTunes/iTMS, and the iPod—is just dumb.
Is is too much to ask for a 2.00 cable to be included?

Otherwise, the upgrades are great and I can't wait to see the camera connector.

I thought similarly after checking out the gallery at apple.com, but the photos of the 6GB version at ipodlounge.com seem to indicate that there's no difference in colour between the 1G and 2G models. I hope that's the case anyway, as I've just ordered one!

i just picked up my silver 6 gb mini last night, and it's the exact same color as the 1g model. i actually wish it were more of a graphite color, but this silver is still my favorite out of the new color choices.

i didn't realize that a firewire cable was NOT included, and since my rev. a powerbook does not have usb 2.0, i panicked a little worrying that the ipod wouldn't charge through my powerbook. i even asked one of the store staff, and he said i'd need to get the power adapter or buy a firewire cable. so, i bought the power adapter. lo and behold when i get back and plug the mini into my powerbook, it DOES charge from my usb 1.0 port. i feel a little like i bought something i don't need, but it will be useful when i travel without my powerbook and need to charge my ipod. if i end up not using it that much, suppose i can just ebay it...

I went to the Apple Store on Michigan Avenue today to pick up iWork '05 (which is fantastic, btw) and saw the new iPod mini colours, and here are my thoughts:

The blue is definltely more vibrant and almost turquoise in colour.

The green looks better than ever and the brightness of the new green really pops. Gets my thumbs up.

The pink looks like hot pink now, almost neon, very bright, very cheap looking in my opinion.

The silver is, of course, unchanged.

It seems like Apple is really pushing out the iPod 20GB, as all of the regular sized iPods on display are now the iPod photo. I saw a few of the iPod photos frozen up, btw.

That is all. :)

I just placed my order through the educational discount website for a 40 gig iPod Photo and it was only $350. An awsome deal considering its brand new and comes with the docking station and carrying case and is for the same price as the 30gig. The only differance is that its just a tiny bit thicker than the new 30gig. What a steal. :D

Do you ever sleep? Fine. I thought so. Plug it in before you go to bed, and when you wake up in the morning all of your music will be there.

Chris

Except, you know, the computer will fall asleep before it's finished, therefore no longer allowing the transfer to continue and the charging of the iPod will make the computer shut off completely since the power being drawn to charge the iPod is too much for a sleeping computer.

Where did the 40 gig drives go?

Was this a great marketing move for the iPod Photo.... or did the Mac Mini eat up all the 40 gig drives? I place my 25 cents on MacMan!

:)

The green one is the colour I'm thinking of getting. Either that or the silver one. (If anyone has any pictures of the new green one, please post a link or picture.)

Overall, I think Apple is on the right track with their colours, and I wouldn't be surprised to see a yellow or orange one added to the mix in the near future. The did the right thing by dropping the gold one, as that colour never really caught on with users, anyways.

Okay, let's be honest here. I love Apple. My fifth iPod is on its way to my house as I write this. I've had a 2G 10GB, a 3G 20GB, a 4G 20GB, a 1GB shuffle and now a 40GB photo. Yes, I bought an old photo on sale from Buy.com because it still had all of the accessories in the box. Not to mention, I've had two laptops and numerous other Apple-branded accessories. However, I do not feel at all alienated by this recent business move. Look at the numbers. We Mac users are no longer the primary iPod user base. In fact, we haven't been for quite some time. Sure Apple makes both our computers and the iPod, but the iPod hasn't been Mac-only since the summer of 2002. Do I think they should've taken out the Firewire cable? No. Do I think they are making a good decision for future iPod sales? Yes. PC users buy a lot more iPods than we do. Most PCs don't have Firewire ports. This just makes sense. My iBook only has one Firewire port, and it's currently home to a DVD writer and an iSight. Luckily, I also have two USB 2.0 ports. Thankfully, I get a USB cable to use. If I only got Firewire, then I couldn't use all of my devices without a hub. Maybe Apple should provide a Firewire hub with all iPods because of my dilemna. Wait, they sell a whole bunch of laptops every year. I NEED EXTRA FIREWIRE PORTS! WE ALL DESERVE EXTRA FIREWIRE PORTS WITH OUR iPODS! This is ridiculous.

Alright. For those who want a "side-by-side" comparison of the old vs. new colors (more like "bottom-by-top" comparison):

P.S. Also note that the symbols on the click-wheel are now in the case-color and no longer gray...

I don't really like this update.

The iPod minis just seem loud as opposed to beautiful (exception: silver), and I mourn the 40 gig iPods. If I were to get an iPod, that would be the model I would get.

Also, I was hoping that Apple would add an 80 or 100 gig iPod, for the reasons that a) the lower-end iPods would get cheaper, that b) even more people would get the iPod for really HUGE music libraries (I know some people who have 70+ gigs of music in MP3s!), and c) others would get the iPod not only to play music, but to backup their computer hard drives.

Lastly, the iPod 20 gig is currently the most popular according to Steve Jobs. Although this may be so, why shave off goodies on other models?

Miami Vice pods??

Thanks for the eye witness colour commentary.
The turquoise choice seems really odd, the previous blue was, imho, much nicer. I wonder what age focus group testing they're doing. The '80s are coming back I guess, Miami Vice is soon to be released as a movie with Colin Farrell!
I swear Sonny had a jacket that same shade of teal (shudder).

I don't know anyone with a 70GB library of music, let alone a legal one. 100GB
would equate to approx 25000 songs or 2000+CDs, the market for such a player is very limited. I have only about 20% of my iPod filled [given I dont have a large library]. I would question as to whether those with 100GB of MP3's actually could list 10% of the artists in their library.

If you want to back up your computer data, get an external drive, this will be MUCH cheaper.

I posted earlier about this...somewhere lost in the hundreds of postings in this thread but...

80GB would only be 250 cd's or about 3000 songs if you use lossless.

So there is a need if you value high quality sound. Or if, like me, you try to back up every cd you buy/own to your computer using lossless. 128AAC is weak by comparison. Actually, I own about 800 cd's so I need about a 250-300 GB drive to hold them. Not for my iPod, thats too much music, but 100GB would be nice.

Still has the FW cable, I think

I apologize if someone's already mentioned this, but I'm in a bit of a rush and not really able to read all 16 pages...

On the tech specs pages, the iPod still has the FireWire cable; I know people were worried about it with the iPod mini, but I think it's just because you don't need FireWire for 6 gigs, especially with the speed USB 2.0 is supposed to go at. Of course, I feel bad for the PC users who don't have USB 2.0 and have to get the AC adapter and FireWire cable to connect to the wall. That's rough.

I'm looking at the specs page, and there are two sizes: .63" (1.6cm) and .75" (1.9cm).

I don't know why, but even the 60GB iPod photo feels lighter than my iPod 20GB (4G).

New Green iPod mini- inspired Invader Zim?

The iPod mini in the new green color looks almost similar to the green color in this image from 'Invader Zim':

I wonder if Apple was inspired by the TV show Invader Zim for the new 'green' version.

80gb photo ipod

an external hard drive might be much cheaper than a 80+gb ipod but it also weighs MUCH more! trust me. i've been editing my sisters wedding footage on my ibook, it only has a 30gb hard drive so i had to borrow an external from work.. i can tell you i'd rather be carrying the ipod in my back pack anyday!!

i also know of some sound engineers and producers who use their ipod for much the same thing... easy! and the dual purpose is nice too :)
