Better than ever, for the same price.

And you CAN upgrade to 1 GB with non-Apple RAM--easier then ever: it's got 512 plus an empty slot, instead of 256 plus an empty slot.

SuperDrive should be standard? Not on a base model. Low-end PCs don't even have a combo drive! (Or VRAM for that matter--they don't even meet the specs for 3D games the Mini can play. Or DVI.)

Forget "optical audio output", only the PowerMacs have that! (and iMacs?)
Yeah, iMacs too.

I am impressed with the update, but feel that they should have thrown in the 64MB graphics too. They should also produce a range of smaller/budget displays for use with the Mac Mini, so many look at the 20" ACD and are put off by the price, but the quality and style of other monitors are poor. If they did a scaled down 17" widescreen display, that could say retail at a couple of hundred pounds, I think the Mini woud be a more attractive option.

.....except they increased the price in the UK, you have to pay for that 256mb of extra RAM.

WORST UPDATE EVER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

maybe UK ram is more expensive? :p

If not for the Intel announcement this update would have been another "hey it was updated and has only been out for 6 months so not bad, not great, but more for the money." With the Intel announcement however, this update sucks. The RAM is good but the video ram is desperate for an update. Apple will have to do better if they want to move machines during this transition.

What do you want? There aren't the processors to upgrade. You can't put a G5 inside a Mac Mini. OK, you could put a 1.67Ghz processor in there, plus a better graphics cards.

Nothing much will happen until the Intel range come out mid next year.

Nice to see a better graphics card inside the iBook.

Yes, Apple could have done better, but until the Intels come out next year things are going to be pretty static and certainly no major redesigns with the PPCs.

I was seriously considering this new mini to replace my aging iBook G3 800Mhz (my only computer) but this just isn't enough. Looks like I may be waiting for the Intel Mac mini to do the upgrade. Guess that means I can save up some more and get a nice display along with it.

Not all bad.

Its still nice of Apple to be throwing in an extra 256mb of ram plus airport for no price increase. We should be happy.

Are you joking? In Europe, the prices for the iBook were increased by 40-50 Euro, depending on the country.

-Sigh-
I kinda wanted a new computer and a Mini with 64MB on GFX would've been nice that alone would've been enough to make me order one but now I have to decide between it and an eMac and the eMac is winning at the moment.

I don't think the SD should be standard, but should be on eMacs and upwards. People who want a Mac Mini want a small scaled down computer to hide away, not something that can do everything. If they do, they get the better models, custom order them or go for the iMac. What is annoying is saying that there is a hundred quid difference between the Combo and SD models and the only difference is a slightly faster processor and the ability to burn DVDs. If they ditched the Combo and made a 17" with the same specification as the 20", then added a higher spec 20" to go alongside the current model, that would give people the choice of budget 17", mid spec 17", mid spec 20", (being same as 17", but bigger display), high end 20". Now that would be a choice, but i fear would lead to massive 17" sales and lower 20".

The Mac mini only has one RAM slot!

The good thing is, now when you upgrade to 1GB you've got a spare 512MB stick instead of a 256MB one.

Not only is the update terrible try the following

max out the 1.25ghz model with airport, bluetooth, superdrive and the 80gb hdd. It costs more than the same 1.42ghz model. What planet are apple on!

Um the mini has one ram slot and always has...

Are you sure about that? I have always been under the impression that you have to remove the old memory on the mini in order to install the new one.

I have 128 MB ram somewhere in my room from my powerbook rev A. I updated the memory on that machine. Will I be able to use it to upgrade the mini?

Mac mini buyers are NOT looking at high-priced widescreen LCD displays. At best, I'd say that most are using CRTs and low-end 15/17" LCDs.

I, myself, am running my Mac mini on a 13" CRT (just measured it... always thought it was a 14"!).

Yeah Mini now costs 30 euros more... This is a really disappointing update. :(

the iBook is allso up now...

and we the euro-guys are ****ed anyway... iBook 999 usd -> 737,71 euro
and here it costs... 1059 euro (1434,10 USD)... thats a difference of 321,29 euro (435,10 USD)!!! I can go to the US buy one there, fly back and get the belgian powerplug for the price if I bu it here, and I will have a nice trip included :p

same with the Mac mini basic model in euro: 538,99 (729,90 USD) and in the us: 499USD (368,48 euro) pricedifference: 170,51 euro (230,90 USD)

I didn't realised that shipping those macs to europe was that expensive :p

You've got the cause and effect all wrong. It's because they're at the point of doing updates like this that they're in turn doing the Intel migration.

Being unable to update the graphics card on the mini along with the slow hdd performance is perfectly fixable and has nothing to do with the switch to intel.

That's one thing that has always annoyed me about apple's upgrade options, they make no sense. Make them a little cheaper and they would get more customising their order and a little profit is better than none.

?

Seeing the prevailing negative votes and comments, I can't stop myself from asking - What the hell did you really expect, people?

The Mac mini can hardly be improved until the Intel switch. After all it is supposed to be not only a cheap computer, but also a very tiny one.

Mac mini and PowerBook don't have the same type of RAM (PowerBook uses SODIMM, Mac mini uses DIMM). I won't even fit!

And yes, the Mac mini only has one RAM slot. Any memory upgrade requires you to remove the current RAM stick and replace it with the new one.

This update should not be on the Apple.com frontpage.

New Mac mini.... "NEW"???

In the low-end: € 30,- more for 256 MB RAM more
In the high-end: € 30,- more for 256 MB RAM more, and BT + Airport. But modem kicked out. (Better value IMHO)

But, there is nothing new about it.

Will you people stop comparing prices! The USA and Canadian prices don't include the taxes! Your prices do! That's where the huge price difference comes from!
